I was thinking about that - and the thought occurred to me... What would be the best answer that would embarrass a person asking it? :pac:

"Officer, I'm a dildo tester. Well some one has to do it!" :o

I'm sure they have asked questions that lead to embarrassment for them. :pac:

I think the problem here, apart from the fact that this country has a serious lack of respect for its police force, is that people are assuming that if the Gardai stop it's because they think you doing something illegal.

I was only stopped once by a gard and the bloke stuck his head in my window ,took a good wiff about three inches from my face. A total eejit if I ever came across one.

Some of this country's police force have a lack of respect for the public.

Countless times I see them on their mobile phones laughing and joking while manouvering junctions.
Speeding up bus lanes without sirens.
Hiding behind trees with speed cameras.
And some eejits who shouldn't be allowed deal with the public at all ,because they've a chip on their shoulder.

I suspect he might have stuck their head in to see if they could smell something coming from a driver?
Drugs? (Maybe they thought your eyes look too glazed or something... possibly indicating drug use ...and only a few quick ways to check!)

There is sadly always going to be idiots - but while those few idiots are out there been seen, what about the many others that are elsewhere chasing leads, examining locations, back at the office doing paperwork, looking up criminal locations, are in court giving evidence, stopping criminals actually at their scene of crime, etc?
We in general, are too quick to tarnish all by the actions of a minority. Its a sad truth.

    Sadly true.
The actions of the few certainly are not doing their fellow workers any favours.
Keeping that in mind, I take each Gardi as he/she comes to me and treat them accordingly.
    Its only right.

i hate it when people give out about the gardai, its being plain hypocritical because if your house is broken into or your assaulted they are going to be the first people you are going to ring. .

Most insurances policies require this, people do not phone them
because they think they are so good they will actually solve the crime.

If you had big knives in the back seat he would be doing more than asking your occupation.

we were on about been stopped at a CP, no guard has the right to ask your occupation as a random question.

Yes they do. You don't have to answer but they have the freedom to ask.

yes I know but who would ask that question without having a valid reason.

You said they dont have the right to ask. Now you say they do but why would they without a valid reason. The reality is they can ask what they like.

What would be the valid reason for asking where your going when at a checkpoint any more than asking what you work at?

    Earlier you said....
It is only a question. have you something to hide.

What makes you think they don't have valid reasons? There could be many reasons why they are questioning you. I and others have pointed them repeatedly.

You do seem to have a chip on your shoulder about this.

Not at all, I Don't have a problem with AGS. I'm well aware of the difficult job they have. It would not be common practise to question people at a routine CP. I cannot see why your occupation would be of any interest to a guard who is looking at your Tax ins etc.

But you have no way of knowing what he is looking for.

And if you do think it makes no difference to him what have you got to lose by telling him?

It depends on the CP they are carrying out. If it is a routine CP then there is no reason they would ask anything. Ask over in emergency services and see what your answer will be.

Then it is just a harmless question and there really is no need to get indignant about it. Just answer it and be done.

Do you think they would ask if you were married or single ?

I don't know but it wouldn't bother me if they did. I'm sure they would have their reasons even if it was just checking how lucid I am.

I hear they have a good sense of humour, asking for phone numbers is common practise. have you ever been stopped by a guard ?

Well when they have a checkpoint up, they wont really be telling us what type of checkpoint it is. You reckin there are different question criteria for different checkpoints? Or if its a routine checkpoint, you think they should not ask you anything?
Ask over in emergency services and see what your answer will be.

I would not say they have much to do with what a garda can or cant ask at a checkpoint.

It is my understanding that (a) a Garda CAN ask you this question and (B) apparently, you have to be coming from SOMEWHERE and going SOMEWHERE else......

It is the same if you are a pedestrian.....you cannot loiter and a Garda has the right to move you on.......

Just something I remember from my civics class many moons ago......of course, I could be suffering from dementia as well!:D

Yea a lot of the questions they ask are to see if you have had a few. I dont see any big deal with it myself.

There is a number of reasons why they ask you something.

    1. They listen to your voice to see if your slurring your words!
    2. They might be seeking someone that resides in a particular area.
    3. They might actually be advising people to avoid an area once in a while and do so when they hear your direction!
    4. They might be delaying you while they check out your details and try spot the tax/insurance dodgers...
    ...and so on!

For gods sake, if all it takes to get your gall up is a simple question, you really need to grow up OP.
Gardi don't particularly like standing out on cold nights, on dark roads, having to stop people - but once in a while they do actually catch folk that are out of their heads on drink and/or drugs that are driving. Folk that maybe might have otherwise got away and injured/killed someones son/daughter/mother/father!
I hope its not your family effected some day OP.
...Just answer the question, drive on and get on with your life!

And a million more why he was right to tell him politely that its none of his business.
