Can anyone tell me has Garda Reserve Training ceased for the time being and when will it commence if this is the case?

    Hi all,

For those of us starting on the 6th May could anyone estimate when we will finish the training?

    Thanks

    Hi irishguy,

Not 100% sure if they've stopped recruiting but there's definitely a class going down on May 7th 2011. As a Reserve myself it can take anything from 1 year to 3 years to get from application to actually being called for training. You would want to be pretty serious about it to stick out the waiting! Check out publicjobs.ie for garda reserve application. Regards,

    Hi the_view,

There was nothing too crazy but when you get fitted for your uniform on the Friday evening...by God...you nearly burst with excitement haha. Everyone looks great in uniform and you get all items to fit like slacks, shirt, boots, stab vest, hat and coats etc. Make the wait seem worth while! I think we pick them up on phase 3 not too sure. A lot of info on Friday but a good few breaks in the day to get food in the canteen. Up at 7:30am for breakfast at 8 then class at 9. Goes until bout 4:30 then women get fitted for uniform and lads later. Takes bout 20mins each for women cos the uniform has to fit in all the right places haha and the lads are in and out in about 5 r 10, depending on how fussy they are! Met for drinks on Thurs between 8 and 9 r that, see who's floating around. If you groups of two's and 3's... you can guarantee they're Reserves lol :D looking forward to meeting you all down there.

Ye you get it in phase III. Did you carry on with phase II even though you have self defence to do or do you have to wait to do it with the May intake?

Wasn't allowed continue without self defense done so I'm joining up with the May class. Rang them this morning to confirm so they said I may as well come down Thursday night to 'refresh my memory' on Friday. Don't really mind. Are you a Reserve lst?

Ye am finished training etc though, just curious as a few people I know had issues about only being able to semi complete training owing to college etc (and Templemore were always most accommodating and helpful in fairness).

A lot of people joined us for phase III self defence who had been in the previous class and failed.

    What did they fail?

Various parts of self defence and the procedure in same.

Nobody from our intake failed, but practically the entire class practiced for about 90 mins on the Friday evening, with the assistance of those repeating.

I'm only off crutches recently, hope i'll be fit enough for the self defence. Hard to believe people actually failed self defence! Must be tough going! How does phase 2 work?

There is technique to some of the self defence and verbal warnings etc.

Phase II you will likely be along with some others from a neighbouring county and will meet a training Garda (likely a sergeant) for anything from one or two evenings a week to one full day a week or any combination of the above. That will last about 8 weeks followed by an exam on a Tuesday at 6/7pm. It will include legal theory and some practical sessions.

Everybody has the same exam at the same time so nobody can pass hints. Assuming you pass (which most do) you return for phase IV the Thursday eve/Friday am of that same week.

Better get reading that folder so...I got it that Friday I was down but only glanced through it. I hope Phase 2 won't interfere with work, I work part time and extremely random shifts. Thanks for the heads up on phase 2 lst,

Allow 8 weeks for phase two starting Mid/LateMay - so Phase two ending Mid July, Phase 3 that weekend, Phase IV allow 10 weeks ish - so perhaps Late September at the earliest.

Occasionally two different intakes graduate together so you may be waiting another 6 weeks for the intake after yours.

Also Im not sure if there normally is a "summer break" in Templemore which could delay phase III.

Our training Sergeant was very flexible to suit us, she even held most of the classes in a district HQ which was central for us all (The Divisional HQ where classes were normally held was an hour further for all of us).

If your local classes dont suit and your not the only one in the group then you should be able to request to do your phase II elsewhere.

If at all possible find out what reserves in your area did prior to this -there are lists online of the numbers of reserves in each station.

    So Roscommon / Longford has:
    Boyle 2
    Granard 2
    Longford 3
    Roscommon 6

Those figures were late last year but if you try get in touch with a Reserve in one of those stations they can advise you on the format of phase II in your area. Bear in mind these are probably people from within your division, but not your Garda district, so while you will have similar experiences for phase II, your phase IV will possibly be different.

Physical things self defence only really. The rest is theory and scenario (handling situations) based.

So there is no running or anything like that? is there a gym down there would we have access to it?

No running miles or laps or anything like that. There will be rather intense warm-ups prior to the classes, particularly in phase I.

Up to and including my intake we didnt have access to the gym.

Its possible that changed afterwards though as it was something that was discussed.

Oh trust me you won't be needing the gym once the instructors are finished with you especially on phase1!

Seriously I was aching all over for days after phase1, seriously intense! You won't want the gym that week-end, you'll want to kick back and have a bevie and chat (complain about the pain).

Lol...whats so intense about it though? What do they have you doing?

ah now look I'm not going to answer this and nor will anyone else. Please don't be asking questions looking for particulars of the training. I won't allow that in this forum.
If you're successful and you see Templemore as a trainee Reserve you will find out that information. It's not for everyone to know.

    Thanks :)

When did he apply...takes a year to get from initial interview to start training in templemore! Phase 2 is 56 hrs of classes in ur local station learning loads of stuff. U make the hours up over 8 r 10 weeks. They help u out if ur workin...u can go for class when it suits u so no prob if u work. Hope that helped :-)
