I'm using vix image at the moment but I remember I had this problem with nova-t stick using BH image, it seemed to "forget" it's settings and I had to reboot every time, I quickly dumped that image and went to vix. The next vix image will have support for nova-t/volar etc.

Im using PLi and if its the same issue with BH whos to say that VIX will sort it.
    Maybe its hardware issue.

Its odd though I bought this DVB-T because 9-10 people here had it and all the stories were good. (other than the audio sync issue from earlier). But it seems that not all is good.

Who is using DVB-T for Saorview on Duo and has it working pefectly and on what image and tuner.

I have the nova-t on my vu+ duo with the PLI image. It is working well although yesterday I could not get any of the stations. I checked with my Sony TV and there was no signal there either so i concluded that the Saorview was off the air for a while. I am happy with the tuner and the vu+ duo.

If this is the case it will be dissapointing. Was looking forward to vix 1.4 support for this but it wont be much good if it is the same as the others.:(

I would be surprised if nova-t does not work in vix 1.4 as the development team have a great reputation of thoroughly testing hardware hence sometimes the long wait for a revision.

Just a guess but maybe there was a break in transmission and the tuner lost the signal.

Not sure about any break in transmission but when I checked 2 TVs with DTT the channels were fine.

If it could have been a reception loss would it just not come back when the signal was OK.

As for Vix, if the drivers are the same as other images then there is a risk of the same problems. Drivers in most images tend to be ones borrowed from other sources.

I've done a PLi update (65 packages) and will monitor it over a few days incase there was something in there that helps the issue.

Note - when I updated PLi Softc*m in setup was reset to none . Anyone else see this..

i have sundtek tuner working 100 percent perfect with vix on vu+ duo and has never once had a problem. in relation to other tuners as has already been explained by the team dvb-t will be in next vix rev and is recoded fully by vix and not reliant on old code like other teams.

You did say that the sundtek could take a minute to wake up when you changed to DTT? Didn't you, or was that someone else?

    Is this still an issue?

yes i did a few months ago but the latest driver from sundtek resolved that issue a while back :D

Is the ViX team aware of the bug that dfdream has reported with the Nova T? Do you know if it's been happening in the beta version?

Also have you check out pip in the beta version?

obviously cannot speak about what the dev team are coding at the minute but to say all are working VERY hard and testing all issues fully on the image and will be worth it for everyone when ready.
    in relation to pip as silver and other team members have explained, the vu+ hardware is not able for true pip and instead relies on a continual stream of still photos of the other channel { a bit like a forecourt cctv system}

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,527 ✭✭✭stanley1

pip has been implemented on pli 2.0 but as irishchris has said it's not true pip, just a stream of stills, not really worth it imho.

    Update

The black screens seem to be no longer.

The issue now is that once yesterday and once today the whole box froze.

I had to reboot with telnet.

I set timer to tape eastenders on RTE1 on DTT yesterday.
But when I came home the box had frozen to a screenshot of a program on a SAT channel that was on at the recording start time.

Then this evening I set timer to record "Heat" on RTE 2 on DTT while watching news on RTE1 DTT and the box froze.

    Both recordings had 0KB.

Other recordings have been fine and a few tests have been OK.

Seems to be no issue when viewing on DTT.

Maybe issue waiting for spin up of disk for DTT recording ?

    Anyone any ideas.

    This is getting annoying.

i have several timers setup on dtt {rte 1 , rte2 and 3e} through autotimer on vix image using a sundtek tuner and have never had a failed recording? have you a swapfile on your vu+ as maube dtt hauppage tuner is hogging resources?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 532 ✭✭✭dfdream

    Thanks Chris for the response.

Not sure if there is a swap file option in PLi.

Im just waiting to go back to VIX 1.4 and hopefully good and stable DVB-T support.

Wonder if there is anything that logs what happens or can be turned on to track the freeze.

Must be something like memory leak. Im taping 3 programs now on DTT to test and it all seems fine.

    Folks

Lets all be patient with this box, we are early adopters here. This is all very new and third party firmware will be unstable for a while. It may take a few months and a few software revisions as is the normal curve of the life cycle for such devices.

Vix 1.4 may have more DTT support but it will be buggy in its initial releases as is to be expected. You can only test so far before you give software to consumers. Then and only then do you really test it.

    In the meantime......It's only tele.

Hi mate. Next time it is freezing or slowing down telnet into the box and run the command (top) - without the brackets. It will show you where the memory is going and how heavy cpu is been used also. In the meantime look forward to welcoming you back with next version of vix. Hopefully you will find it much improved :)

Are we going to get ViX 1.4 today???

    The tension is rising!!!

    Hi Chris
Tell me, where did you learn all this Linux command stuff? Is there any good online resource for total beginners to learn? I have searched but come up with sites and tutorials that seem to assume some knowledge.

    What about http://fedoraproject.org/ ?
Is this a good Linux Package to start with? I could put it on a VM but is it just a GUI or can it be tweaked and could we commands to it via telnet etc (practice)?

The Vuplus is Korean. There a big Korean holiday the week, New Year. It like Korean's Christmas. So Vuplus probably won't be release v5.6 for at least 2 weeks.

ViX release images on Sunday's. Today is a Sunday. Most of the coders and testers were live on their site around 12 o clock.

I thought today was the day. I was hoping to have HD for the 6 nations next week on RTE.

    Edit:
Just noticed it's Andy's Birthday today, so I can't see him coding too much today.

Are RTE broadcasting 6 nations in HD or is it not upscaled?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,308 ✭✭✭irishchris

im sorry if someone somehow picked up from my commecnt above ? that this was been released today. it is not and is up to the main dev to announce that but there is still a lot of work to do. i will not be able to give details ot dates etc here or anywhere so please do not ask for so thanks. the linux commands i learned off mac in college and through online sites. if you google linux commands there are some very good sites - the best place to learn is online :)

Probably upscaled. The tender for the playout equipment for the output of live HD content onto RTÉ2 HD was issued towards the end of last year with the project set to go live "in the first half of 2011".

I will keep an eye on the memory stats for a few days to see.

Did a complete reinstall of PLI and all the plugins from scratch to see if there was something causing an issue.

These are the current values I have (are they very low)

    total used free
    141440 138424 3016

Is this free mem very low.
It was 14000 after installing 1-2 plugins and then dropped to 9000 then to 3000-5000.

it is borderline - is fine for average viewuing but if you are recording and watching on separate tuners and switch to something like dtt or run crossepg with a lot of sources you may well lock up the box or greenscreen. i really would recommend using a swap file if you continue to get slow down or lock up on your box. not sure if pli have swap facility - try asking on their forum. http://www.pli-images.org/forum/index.php

EDIT: there is an open thread on this in pli at moment http://www.pli-images.org/forum/viewthread.php?forum_id=65&thread_id=14675

    Thanks for that Chris.

I had seen it but was waiting for a solution to it not starting on bootup.

I did it anyway and it seems to help massively in even the system managing what memory it uses.

It doesnt restart on bootup but I can start it from iphone in 2 seconds anyway.

Tried this image last, picked up my nova-t stick straight away, comes from Sifteam, I think they are based in Italy, impressed with it so far, recorded simultaneous dtt and sat and was able to watch and switch between all channels while doing so. It's revision 188.

    Update -

Im a week in now with PLi2.0 and DVB-t (rebuilt from scratch) with Swap enabled, its not autostart so script added to PPanel to start it.

Its working perfectly, I have pushed it hard in that time (tons of recordings at the sametime, manual epg downloads and epg searches etc) and its worked flawlessly.

Im not sure that the swap helped (but it hasnt slowed it down as reported by others) even though it does get allocated memory now and again but Id say the fresh rebuild and limiting the Rytec EPG Sources really helped. Also only have plugins that you really need.

Its great having the extra tuner to do recordings.
    Thanks everyone for your help.
