When should a taxi meter be started by the driver?

I am wondering if anybody knows when a meter should start/be turned on by the driver when you are at a rank.

    Is it:

    a) When you are at the top of the queue and you walk/approach the car?
    b) When the taxi driver gets out of the car to assist with luggage?
    c) When you get into the car and close the door?

Is there a specific rule set down by the regulator?

    Many thanks

Yeah when you say 'oh hai i want you to take me to...' upon engaging with the driver basically

but it'd be up to the driver - most of them dont turn on the meter until they've pulled off but they are entitled to start the meter once the customer has engaged them. It's generally good practice that the taxi driver shows the customer that he's switching on the meter

P.s I know this cos my Bf is a taxi driver :P you can has his number he's awesome lol :D

Someone explain their charges too, like the one that adds more money at the end of the journey, thanks

It really makes no difference when you are talking about times under 2 minutes. The rates for sitting around, not moving are about €25 an hour so 2 minutes will cost you 83 cent, but really you will be talking more like 30 seconds.

If you call a taxi he can turn on the meter from the time he was scheduled to arrive at.

ok .... passenger hails,or gets into taxi at rank .
driver ......good evening where to ?
    passenger ......... town please
driver .......... no problem HITS METER .

passenger walks up to rank with suitcase .
driver gets out and places suitcase in boot .then gets in car with passenger and does the same as above.

passenger books taxi for 6am .taxi arrives at 5.55am rings passenger .he is intitled to start the meter from after the booking time of 6am and this will show on the reciept as to the time he started the meter .

passenger rings in a taxi .taxi arrives with no booking time agreed .usually the driver [well the half decent ones] will allow approx five to ten minutes
waiting then start the meter .
the meter runs on time or distance .if the car is travelling over 8km an hour then it charges per km .stopped or travelling under 8km an hour it reverts onto time .

all the charges are displayed on the fare card in the taxi .
    €1 per extra passenger
    €2 call out charge
example ....... ring taxi in ,three people before 8pm at night
    meter should read
    €4.10 ..plus a reading of €4.00
in the extras slot on the meter .
read the card in the taxi it explains all about the charges .

This sounds like the best way tbh, I'd hope all taxi drivers worked it this way.

id say [off the top of my head so no one start asking for facts and figures here ] that 90% of drivers do exactly that .as for the other 10% they probably should,nt be in the business . but then again who,s fault is that ?

Thanks for your replies. I got it sorted...

    The answer is:

If you hire a taxi from a taxi rank or hail it on the street, the hire starts when the driver agrees to take you as a passenger.

If you pre-book the taxi, the hire starts when the taxi arrives at the agreed pick-up point at the agreed time.

    Cheers,

    Incorrect.........

Distance rate applies unless speed drops below 21km/h when time rate applies
