Computer programming

Wondering if anyone on here programs computers to make music? I mean things like Max/MSP, Supercollider, CSound, that area. Doesn't fit into the Music Production forum really, I'm wondering about building instruments and effects on a computer.

I've really been getting into Pure Data lately. At the moment I send audio and MIDI from Pd into Ableton Live. I really like having all the scope of what Pd allows you to do, which is anything you can imagine really. My setup isn't great, just a NanoKontrol controlling the programs, and the line out from my laptop into some desktop speakers. Hoping to get a good interface in the new year so I can start processing live instruments through the computer too.

Is anyone here into this stuff?

I'd like to try it in the future maybe. Did you know that there is a version of Max/MSP for Ableton called Max for Live?

Although I've been told by a college lecturer that paying for programs such as Reaktor and Max/MSP is not necessary as the likes of Pure Data and C Sound can do it all for free.

I programmed a vst plugin for a college project, I was planning to try more stuff but most ideas I had have been done to a fairly good standard already. I've heard a good bit about Max MSP and PD but I was more into pure code than those. I've been meaning to get them and mess around a bit, I've got a MIDI controller and interface so I want to try using my laptop for guitar stuff.

Yeah, I'd heard about Max for Live, but I wasn't that into the idea of paying for two programs just to not really use either one fully. The way I've got Pd set up now is pretty similar anyway, I can send audio and MIDI between the two programs pretty easily, so I can use Pd to generate or process anything for Live. I'm really happy with it, 'cause Live's session view is really great for jamming, but the open-ended-ness of Pd is unhindered. There's a cool Jonny Greenwood interview where he talks about that idea a little, how open-ended programs are better

I wrote a .mod and .s3m file parser years ago. Does that count? :).

What'd you do with that, Malice_?

    One thing I've been thinking a lot about lately is getting to know the [hid] object in Pd. I'm gonna try pick myself up a cheap USB joypad to try getting MIDI out of it, like in this video;

His videos are really great for anyone trying to learn Pd.

How cool would it be to record/trigger/process samples in real time with a joypad? 12 buttons at instance access, and 2 XY controllers working simultaneously? And the visual appeal of rocking out with a gamepad? Class :)

Not a whole lot to be honest. I started to write it as a learning exercise and also as a method of getting music into a small game I was developing at the same time. Not long after I got everything into a usable state I realised that the world was moving on and DOS-based development like I was doing didn't have much of a future. Also third-party libraries like FMod and Bass could do the same thing only far better.

It was a good learning experience though :).

If you've got a PS2 sitting around the house doing nothing you can pick up a converter in Maplin so that you can connect one of its joypads to a device that supports USB. I use it a bit for gaming on the PC.

That sounds interesting, I'd say thats really useful for generating unconventional sounds which can only be a good thing.

I enjoyed that interview. It's pretty astonishing how talented that guy is!

The interesting thing I learned a little while ago was, on the recording, that song The Gloaming is all analogue synthesisers and magnetic tape!

Actually getting into this kind stuff myself now, must get to grips with MAX DSp. At the moment really just starting build synths etc using Reaktor.
Been using a great program lately called AudioMulch, great from hosting VST and other units to put live instruments through. Creating some interesting nosies with it.

I can't remember where I saw it, but you could also use a Wii remote. I've used one as a game controller in the past using a bluetooth adapter and glovePIE.

Edit: Was doing some searching and came across this.
