Two UPC accounts using the same socket

    Hi guys,
I already have the upc broadband paid by my company, but I'd like to have the tv as well, so I would need another account with them. Is that possible? If yes, would it be possible to have broadband and tv using the same upc socket (from the wall)? I want to to buy a slingbox, so I would need the router close to the slingbox.

    Thanks!

    Roberto

They only allow 1 account per house/flat whatever

tried getting BB separate to tv but no go, they didn't want the extra money apparentley

Why don't you pay the TV + broadband bill yourself, and get a refund from the company for the broadband?

This. Or ask your company to add the TV to the broadband account and just deduct it from your wages each month?

I tried both of the options, but looks like I can't do something like that because of their policy.

If they can't have two accounts in the same flat I might get sky then...probably it's the only option

Or Freesat. You only "need" UPC or Sky Pay TV for "Sky Sport". otherwise a waste of money.

    Free TV in Ireland:

cant quite remember the exact details as i dont live there anymore but this was an issue for us last year when they said no to a seperate broadband account.
(cant even remember why we would of needed one)

But we ended up saying ok, then ringing back a day later and creating a new address saying for example 2A "my road" and it worked.
A week later we had 2 upc guys arrive a day apart and installed 2 seperate broadband accounts.
We got 2 seperate bills in aswell.

Or any of the other many channels that you do not get on free TV...

I did put "need" in quotes

Check out the Nielson (IRL) & Barb (UK) figures

Sky 1 has most pay TV viewers. About 2% viewing time. There is NOTHING worthwhile on Sky 1 that is not either on other free channels at some stage or cheaply on DVD. Or both. Or even true for a lot of Sky 1 that isn't worthwhile.

But then I don't rush to Cinema for new releases. I wait, and if I think it's something I'd like, I get it on DVD.

All Sky Sports together is < 1.5%. Though important to those that have it.

Also "need" is not the same as "want".

Ireland has MASSIVE pay TV penetration compared to UK, fuelled originally by desire for the regular UK channels. Which are now freely available everywhere in Ireland via dish with no subscription.

The vast majority of people only continue to pay for MMDS, Analogue Cable (especially), Sky and Digital Cable because they don't actually know about the high quality once off options, including HD recording like Sky+/SkyHD and now we have finally 6 Irish Stations "officially" in Widescreen (Analogue was never widescreen and poor reception or none for 25% for TV3, 15% for TG4 and 5% to 10% for RTE) with clear digital. You can use a "Freeview+ HD" HDD PVR too on the aerial. (Not a "freeview" box though).

We are now in an Era where PayTV should drop to UK levels, 50% rather than Ireland's 80%

Even that 50% is mostly because of "Sky Sport" exclusivity of premium content.

    http://www.oando.co.uk/articles/dec09/pay-tv-versus-free-tv.php

For TEN years the Irish Government has tried to sell a Pay TV licence for Irish DTT. It's TV, Boxer, One Vision and EasyTV all failed to launch. If "Real Digital TV" launches, they will go bust.

Boxer added only 1000 new customers in Sweden in the last year. Pay TV has peaked, saturated and with BBC1 & ITV FTA in HD and will joined by HD C4 and HD Five (the regular C4 and Five already FTA) and launch of Saorview, with perhaps Saorsat in May, pay TV can only contract.

Why pay €15 to €80 a month when you can get 95% of what you watch for free?

I get what youre saying, but its down to what you want from a TV service. If all you want is the 6.01 news then rabbit ears do the job. If you want Coronation St/Eastenders then free-to-air will probably suffice. But most people I know enjoy watching channels other than the free-to-air channels. Football aside, I dont think there is a single thing that I watch on any of the Irish channels of the terrestrial British channels. Im not much into soaps and reality TV rubbish.

Youre not wrong in what you say, and a lot of people probably would be happy with free-to-air, but I dont like this attitude that seems to go around when people talk about FTA that pay TV is a waste of money, almost suggesting that people are stupid to be paying money to watch TV. You might get a lot of channels on FTA, but in my opinion most of it is rubbish (including the Irish and UK terrestial channels) and if you want something worth watching then you really need to get either Sky or UPC.

This really is a personal preference thing tho.

    Agreed.

I'm only pointing out that many people actually pay for stuff they don't watch and watch stuff that's free.

It's up to folk to make sure they get value for money. We spend the money we used to spend on Pay TV on DVDs.

We used to watch Discovery, History etc a lot, but after while a lot of repeats, and now box sets of DVDs of that kind of stuff are not expensive.

No one is stupid for paying for pay Tv. Only maybe under informed if they are only really watching the "free" channels and paying €60 a month.

Yep, basically the same as you would if you had a granny flat for rent or something.
I think when on the phone they did say "we already have an account for you at that address" and i just replied politely that it was a different address and a week or so later guy arrived and installed it.
Didn't think it would work myself and i'l find out more in next few days if i'm missing something.
