I'm actually dying to get into radio and you're dying to get out of it.

Shows that the e-mail we recently got saying the system is fair is a load of boll**** because if the system was fair there wouldn't be so many people stuck doing a module they have no interest in doing.

There'll probably be a place opening in radio soon... start sending Des some fruit baskets and he may pick you. Completely fairly, of course.

Not unless someone leaves radio, which isn't looking likely at the moment.

I reckon e-mail Marie-Lousie personally. If you *REALLY* want it, she'll listen to your pleas, but you'll have to be very convincing, I've heard she doesn't like big classes. But she does seem to like a bit of confidence and conviction.

That said Karl Grimes is a genius and his classes are a treat. If you're anyway interested in photography, I wouldn't change. He's won a lot of people over this year that were a bit 'meh' at the start.

Count yerself lucky with photography though - Video seems to be a disaster!

Well I'll give it a try but she made it clear last year that she doesn't like big classes.

I'm sure Karl Grimes is a great lecturer but I have absolutely ZERO interest in photography. No matter how good he is he will never make me interested in the stuff. It really pisses me off that I'm going to be back learning shayte that I have no interest in, it's like the Leaving Cert all over again. I came to college so I wouldn't have to put up with that anymore. I find the prospect of waiting in a dole queue more appealing than studying photography.

Couldn't agree more Benny, and I actually feel terrible being in Radio when you want it so much and I've no interest. I think there should have been some kind of warning in the prospectus. I want video, why would they think I'd enjoy radio?

    fair selection process, yeah right.

I hated my secondary school but they had a system that would be very beneficial in this situation.

Before we did our Junior Cert they made us fill out forms stating which subjects we would most likely want to do for the Leaving Cert. Then, based on the feedback, they made extra/less classes to accommodate as many students as possible, and then allowed some switching if necessary.

However here it seems more of an "accommodate some of the students and screw the rest" approach.

I can't believe I just sorted of praised my secondary school.

It seems to reek of a system where the students don't mean jack and once classes are full then they're happy.

Phasers, have you any interest in photography at all? Even the slightest bit more than radio?

Maybe you and Benny could switch if it suits if radio and photography are all the same to you.

It is an annoying system though, apparantly they only changed it to the current method 2 years ago. I really don't see why it has to be 28 students in each class, maybe in video because its all group work, but alot of work in radio is on your own or in a group of 2 or 3, and everything in photo is done alone.

I doubt you could switch with someone from radio into video, but the chances are much higher of switching from photo to radio. Benny, if I was you I'd look at the radio list at everyone who got it as their 2nd choice and see if they want to swap cos I'd say they were hoping for video so much that they didn't care too much about 2nd and 3rd choices and may have hardly any preference in terms of radio over photo.

    CS2 shall be interesting....

I'm doing video so yes, I wonder how inspring William Chook will be.

Also I think I'll pick French as well, always good to have a language with a degree.

I really feel bad for yee all - this is a horrible situation to be in. Marie Louise is an inspiring lecturer, highly talented and several former students of hers told me they learnt more about any other medium in her class - she teaches you to see with your ear and hear with your eyes (that will make sense by xmas)

If you find someone to swap with and inform both lecturers then it should be okay.

To change this system I am afraid there will need to be a wave of complaints put in - obviously this wont benefit this years second years but it would avoid this next year.

Somebody mentioned the fact that this wasn't in the prospectus and it should have been. This is a very good point - however unless you can afford to take DCU to the High Court (as its a state body so your require a judicial review) then off with you.

Also just for those who don't want to be in radio - those who ended up in last year are happy to be in radio now.

    Best of luck folks though!

    PM coming your way! =D

I was recently in contact with one of the powers that be and it seems that it's not a simple case of organising a swap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,159 ✭✭✭✭phasers

Which is ridiculous, if both students agree that they want to swap it should surely just be a matter of swapping the names?

Why not??? What did they say? I know wrecking their heads is hardly gonna get you into a class but surely if someone is willing to swap they can get it sorted. Grrr

I would imagine they think that if someone wants to get into their choice that did better in their exams than you that they should get the choice first, for the sake of fairness.

I guarantee you one thing Marie Louise will try and motivate you to fight to change she is a real educator and wants you to be happy in the course you choose

Well firstly the guy (I'm sure you know who I'm talking about) said that there was no problem with it. Four hours later I got this e-mail:

    "Dear Benny

Can we hold things for few days as I have to make a decision in the interest
of all the class. So please ignore my last e-mail for now

    Will be in touch

    Regards".

Make what you will of that...

I'm not sure to be honest, though I'd love to study either in Montreal or Paris for a semester or something, I might look into it.

Regarding the production modules, it's so tough if one is in more demand than the other. I'm not sure who everyone is in relation to usernames, but I know a few who really should be in video and I think there is always exceptions to the rule.

I didn't realise how in demand video was and how little interest there was in photography.

That's actually part of the reason why I'm trying to change. I'm totally not fussed about which module I do but I know there's people in radio that really want to do video so I'm gonna be a good samaritan and try and swap.

There's always MPS and Photosoc anyways! =D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 439 ✭✭Jammy

It's true that if you are involved enough in MPS you'll be shooting videos a lot this year with all the projects that are on the way, so it should be fun either way.
    :D

I hope people settle into whatever they get. I know I'd be gutted if I didn't get my choice.

Hmm, I was looking forward to second year, think I better relish in first year so, as it doesn't accompany all this mess. All I know is I'll be friggin' devastated if I can't go down the stream I want next year. I'll be kickin' up a storm!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,908 ✭✭✭Daysha

First year requires a fair bit of patience, being honest. Most people know it's the course for them and the vast majority love it, but for every cool shoot you get to do in Media Practice, there's 2 hours of mindnumbingly boring culture shíte to get through. And for every interesting presentation there's 3,000 words on social studies required by Christmas. It's not until 2nd year when you can really get stuck into your real interests, especially with 3/5 modules being choices when you include your production.

But then again you could enjoy all the culture shíte in which case you're sorted :)

Hello, I'm thinking of applying for Communications, but I'm a bit concerned about the posts from people going into second year and unhappy with their options.

What system is used to decide whether you end up in Video, Radio or Photography?

I'd be very grateful if someone could explain it.

    Thanks

Don't let us put you off....it's still an amazing course.

The system is basically that at the end of first year you state your preference for video, radio or photography in a 1,2,3 thing. Then, after the results are out they start at the people who got the highest results and go down through the list assigning modules. There's a quota for each class so when one is full (usually video because its the most popular) the rest of the people who had that as they're first choice will be given their second choice and if that's full then their third. It works out well for the people who get near the top of the class and get their first choice but its not so good if you only have interest in one of the modules and get stuck with one you don't want.

you can join the Media Production Society or Photosoc anyways to get experience with whatever you don't get to study!! =]
