Russian composer brings new work to world premiere in Drogheda
    Louth Ireland

The haunting music of Russian-born composer Alexander Knaifel is coming to County Louth with the world premiere of his music in a celebration called ‘The Rest is Noise’.

The work of the St Petersburg composer and cellist will be performed at St Peter’s Church of Ireland, Drogheda on the 1st May, as part of the Drogheda Arts Festival.

A number of world renowned musicians will perform Knaifel’s works. The virtuoso violinist Elizabeth Cooney, will perform ‘EF and the three visiting cards of the poet’, the first Irish commission from Knaifel, along with cellist Elisabeth Wilson and violist Joachim Roewer.
The evening will also include the first Irish performance by internationally renowned Russian pianist Oleg Malov, who has performed in some of the most important festivals of contemporary music in Europe. Oleg Malov will perform the world premiere of A Mad Tea-party Royal version.

The deeply expressive Irish Callino Quartet will also perform some of Knaifel’s hauntingly beautiful music, including ‘O Heavenly King’ with soprano Patricia Rozario.
Organised by Drogheda Borough Council in association with Louth Contemporary Music Society (LCMS) for Drogheda Arts Festival, the performances will be a major musical event for Ireland.
Eamonn Quinn, of LCMS, spoke about the forthcoming event. “We are proud to be able to attract such major contemporary musical events to the area and host such high calibre composers who have chosen to premiere their work in Ireland.”

“Alexander Knaifel is a contemporary of Arvo Part, who’s spiritual music was also brought to the area by the LCMS and featured at performances in Dundalk and Drogheda last year,” said Quinn.

“Knaifel started his career as a cellist and is a former student of Mstislav Rostropovich. He is well-known for both his serious compositions and also his film music, having scored over forty feature films.”

“In the 1970’s he embarked on a quest through his compositions for purity of tone and music of calm, tranquillity and beauty that touch upon mystical questions like the nature of love,” explained Quinn.

“The pieces that will be performed in the ‘Rest is Noise’ recital show just how much he has achieved this quest.”

The Rest is Noise: the music of Alexander Knaifel is presented by Drogheda Borough Council in association with Louth Contemporary Music Society (LCMS) for Drogheda Arts Festival. The Rest is Noise is funded by The Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon and financially supported by the Drogheda Arts Office, the Louth Arts Office and Fáilte Ireland.

All profits will go to two projects currently being undertaken by the Irish Hospice Foundation.

Uri Caine to perform in St.Peter’s Church of Ireland, Drogheda Friday 5 March 2010.

“Uri Caine is a king among princes, a consummate musician who sounds great whether playing Bach, accompanying Don Byron on Puccini’s Nessun Dorma, wrangling an ambitious avant-jazz ensemble around the music of Mahler . . . . . He is prolific, hugely proficient, and ambitious.”John Walters, Guardian

Louth Contemporary Music Society’s first concert for 2010 features a performance by the great American pianist Uri Caine in St.Peter’s Church of Ireland Drogheda on 5 March 2010 at 8pm. You can listen to Uri performing Zorn here.

Pianist and composer Uri Caine gleefully and artfully ignores the boundaries between musical genres, mixing up Mahler and Bach with original music, swinging bebop and hard-hitting drum-and-bass. He launches LCMS 2010 concerts by performing John Zorn’s Book of Angel’s Volume 6: Moloch.

Moloch is a remarkable set of piano solos. Some of these pieces are dark, others very beautiful. All are played superbly and imaginatively. Uri Caine is a Philadelphia-raised virtuoso, unconfined by genres. Likewise-unfettered is the music’s composer, John Zorn, from whose Book of Angels {Masada Book Two} these pieces come.

In addition to performing solo and with his own ensemble, Caine has worked with groups, including those led by by Don Byron, Sam Rivers, Clark Terry, Arto Lindsay,John Zorn and Barry Altschul. He has also performed with the Woody Herman Band, the Enja Band, and Global Theory. Caine has appeared at many jazz festivals including the What is Jazz? Festival, the Texaco Jazz Festival (New York), the Montreal Jazz Festival, Jazz Across the Borders (Berlin), and the Newport Jazz Festival. Appearances at classical music festivals include the Salzburg Festival, the Holland Festival, and the Israel Festival. Caine is the recipient of grants from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Uri Caine is presented by Louth Contemporary Music Society (LCMS) in association with Louth County Arts Office. Uri Caine is funded by The Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon and financially supported by the the Louth Arts Office.

Please note John Zorn is not performing at this concert.

    FIRE-AND-THE-ROSE-8-3.jpg
One of the world’s greatest composer’s, Russian born Sofia Gubaidulina will bring her world renowned contemporary music to the Drogheda Arts Festival on the evening of the 1st May.

Gubaidulina (pronounced ‘goo-bye-DOO-lee-nah) who is visiting Ireland for the first time, will attend a composer portrait concert at St Peter’s Church, Drogheda in which highly acclaimed performers including Ivan Monighetti, the Dublin Guitar Quartet, Malachy Robinson, the Heath Quartet, The Oriel Trio and Dermot Dunne will perform a range of her works.

The concert is the latest of several high profile art music events organised by the Louth Contemporary Music Society, to bring world renowned composers to Ireland, previously having successfully featured, Arvo Pärt, Philip Glass, Terry Riley and Valentyn Silvestov.

Eamonn Quinn, Artistic Director with the LCMS, spoke about the forthcoming event.“We are proud to be able to attract such major contemporary musical events to the area and host such high calibre composers who have chosen to have their music performed in Ireland.”
“It is very exciting to be able to bring the works of Gubaidulina here to Ireland. She has been called the greatest Russian composer at work today since Shostakovich.”

“We are a small society trying to make a big difference to Contemporary music in Ireland. We are becoming more recognised internationally and this has helped us to attract such important composers and performers to attend and participate in our music events,” he said.

“The ‘Fire and the Rose’ performance will be a significant cultural event for Ireland, as it is the first composer portrait of Gubaidulina with the composer present in Ireland.”

Born in 1931 in the Tartar region of the former Soviet Union, performance of her works was forbidden and she was subject to the severest of repression. Now, her music, which was unknown in the West before the Iron Curtain fell, is in great demand by artists all over the world.
Her unique music is marked by the use of unusual instrumental combinations and tunings and shows her interest in folk and ritual instruments from Russia, the Caucasus region and Asia.
Sometimes, fiery and sometimes as soft as a rose, her music includes elements of Christian spirituality, musical symbolism, unique structures derived from fragmentation and repetition of simple material. Early on in her career, she was supported by Dmitri Shostakovich who recognised the musical gift that she possesses.

In 2007, Gubaidulina was the first woman composer to be spotlighted by the BBC during its annual ‘composer weekend’ in London and she has been awarded many prestigious awards including the Prix de Monaco in 1987 and the Living Composer Prize of the Cannes Classical Awards in 2003.

The Fire and the Rose: the Music of Sofia Gubaidulina is presented by Louth Contemporary Music Society (LCMS) in association with Drogheda Arts Festival. The event is funded by The Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon and financially supported by the Drogheda Arts Festival and Louth County Council.

Join the University of Dublin Choral Society in our upcoming celebration of the music of the twentieth-century British composer, Ralph Vaughan Williams. The main work being performed is Hodie, a Christmas cantata telling the story of the nativity and will feature the Saint Patrick’s Cathedral Girls’ Choir. This will be only the third ever performance in Ireland and the first since 1982. The other works include Fantasia on Christmas Carols and the Serenade to Music, which draws its text from Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice. UDCS is also extremely proud to present the Irish premiere of Willow-Wood, a cantata for baritone solo and orchestra.

    "By the Waters of Babylon"

Sibelius The Captive Queen, Op. 48 [15’] (Sung in Finnish)
    Walton Belshazzar’s Feast [36’]
Nielsen Symphony No. 4, Op. 29 ‘The Inextinguishable’ [36’]

    RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra
    Ashley Holland baritone
RTÉ Philharmonic Choir (chorus master Mark Duley)
    Hannu Lintu conductor

Intellectually and musically riveting, Principal Guest Conductor Hannu Lintu’s programmes will be another highlight of the 2010–2011 season. Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast is an eclectic work for the RTÉ Philharmonic Choir to embrace, while Walton’s debt to the influence of Sibelius establishes a connection with the opening work, the rarely performed Captive Queen. The first of three Lintu concerts, this evening also highlights the Nielsen presence in the season – beginning with ‘The Inextinguishable’!

The Culwick Choral Society is proud to present their 21st annual charity performances of Handel's Messiah on Wed. 1st and Thurs. 2nd December 2010. The Choir of over one hundred voices will be joined by four wonderful soloists in the glorious medieval St. Patrick's Cathedral Dublin, a mere stone's throw from Fishamble Street, site of the first performance of Messiah in 1742, proceeds from which were donated to local charities. The Culwick Choral Society continues that great tradition by donating proceeds from their annual Messiah performances to selected Irish charities. This year's charity is One Family, www.onefamily.ie, the leading provider of specialist support services for one-parent families in Ireland.

    Sinéad Campbell-Wallace (soprano),
    Chloe Hinton (alto),
    Benjamin Hulett (tenor),
    John-Owen Miley-Read (bass),
    & Orchestra (Alan Smale, leader),

An advance notice for The Suitcase - An Opera in Belfast at Crescent Arts Centre on Saturday, February 19th 2011.

Chicago Opera Vanguard explores the contents of a suitcase unopened for fifty years. A suitcase filled with letters sent across the American continent from one young man to another. Letters filled with questions about life, art, and the making of self; about the struggles of what it means to be a young gay man rubbing elbows with the queer elite of 1950 New York; about bars that catered to pre-liberation Manhattan and the clientele therein.

The Suitcase—an Opera is currently in development. Chicago Opera Vanguard will present sections and arias from the piece in collaboration with Belfast artists. Chicago Opera Vanguard is committed to creating accessible and exciting theatrical experiences, both concretely and virtually, by commissioning new works, giving a second voice to daring music-theatre pieces, and by completely re-imagining operatic favourites.

The Suitcase—an Opera is presented in association with Queen’s Quarter Weekends.

Tickets are priced £5 and are now available via www.crescentarts.org or by calling Box Office on +44 (0) 28 9024 2338
