Bob, surely you're aware that humour in this forum usually involves innuendo about lube and greasing. That's just gone about 18 miles overhead.

First time ever - I've seen Django Rheinheart used for a visual joke.

Every day - something new on the Boards that for sure

Anyone having issues so far normally had them with the Zip/Post code.

Enter "0" and see what happens.

I considered using this image - cycling-related after all! - but I thought it might be a bit too obscure.

From here on, innuendo and double entendres it is! Now if you'll excuse me, my aunt just texted to say she's having issues with a flange.

First big test is will they survive the weekend. I'm so nervous for them.

I'm clutching a hankie and chewing on a knuckle.

in copenhagen is free to take a bike and then bring it back to another station

Their bike rental system would be handy if you can find a bike, but that is almost impossible, making it useless.

The city have just put out a tender for a new system.

By the way, vandalising velibs yourself just to say "I told you so" is cheating.

It might be worth the extra investment, but consideration should be given to having CCTV discreetly at each location.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,414 ✭✭✭Bunnyhopper

I think a lot of the Decaux fancypants advertising panels that they put up have CCTV watching them (I may just have imagined that, of course), so they really should have the same on the bike stands.

Just ordered mine, should have done so ages ago. They say 14 days, is it likely to take that long, like to give one of them a spin next weekend.

OK, so they should be operational today - who's going to post the first pic of actually using one?

I received my card within 48 hours. That was just before the publicity blitz last week though.

Yeah, hopefully we got in before the big rush that will come today when they are seen in use around town. Fingers crossed.

As I posted over in the commuting and transport thread...

Cycled around (on my own bike) there sometime between 12 and after 1pm to see if many of them were being used.

O'Connell Street and Dame Street were near empty while ones more off the beat and track, like long side TCD were more full. Any time I stopped at any there seem to people taking bikes out and also quite a lot of interest from passers by.

After a late breakfast, I might go out and try one, even if they are just like in Paris.

Here's some photos, will add more later, I'm sure... http://www.flickr.com/photos/ciangin...7622230673547/

Got up this morning and went over to the local one and had a whirl. I think they are deadly. The bikes themsleves are good quality, roll very well. The lock is weak but enough for quick stops. Station interface seems fairly intuitive.

The lights are on all the time and are bright enough that I could see the front light clearly from around 100m away in broad daylight. Saw several people using them so far and was asked about them as I was pedalling around. Gears work fine. Brakes are slow, probably to avoid people jamming on them and stopping too quickly, and maybe encourage slower cycling. Still skidded, oops.

    Great fun they are.

Should have arranged a boardsie circuit of town on em

There is a free iphone app that has a map and shows the amount of bikes and spaces in each station, oddly enouh it is called "Dublin Bikes"

Map bit works but there is no info yet on bikes or spaces, if it works properly it could be useful and not just an add for the developer!

I had a go this morning. I don't have a card yet, so had to go with the 3 day ticket.

    Some thoughts:

    1. The nearest station to me isn't credit card enabled, so I needed to go to a different one. Only 14 of the 40 are credit card enabled. It won't affect card holders obviously, but it will be an inconvenience for casual users.

    2. The screen's not touch screen. Very strange. Perhaps it's a anti-vandalism measure, though I've seen touch screens on another scheme (Vienna).

    3. The credit card authorisation is ponderously slow. At least a few minutes. If even a few people decide to go to a credit card enabled station at lunchtime, there'll be a long queue very quickly.

    And on to the bike.

Lovely to ride, nice upright position. Perfect for a spin in town. Brakes are a bit soft, though as someone else mentioned, probably intentional to stop 'over the handlebars' incidents.

I wish everyone involved the best of luck with it. And the first little skanger caught trashing one should made an example of.

    DFD.

When I hear Ray D'arcy talking about cycling, all he talks about is near misses. I think he needs training; there is something wrong with the way he cycles.

Just back from a lunch time walk, saw one or two people on them. Walked by the stations at Merrion Square and the one just off Baggot Street just beside the Bank of Ireland, there was only one station empty in each of them with some foreign chaps trying unsuccessfully to get a bike from the Baggot Street station, I think the thought you could just rent one then and there without registration etc.

Heard Darcy this morming alright, I usually have time for him but he often does these 'Do you not just think..' interviews were he doesn't listen to whats said, just keeps whinging and moaning randomly.

He seems really against the scheme, the guy from the council was a bit shocked I think. 'Do you not just think this money would have been better spend upgrading the cities infrastructure for cycling instead' Not realising that JC Decaux are doing the funding now. 'Do you think people will get injured' Darcy was giving him a hard time on everything he said. eg The guy said the stations were in busy areas, Darcy 'not the one I went too!' Hah!.

He caught himself out though trying to let on the guy from the council wasn't a cyclist Darcy 'Do you cycle yourself?' Yep 'Really? not every day though???' Yes, Ray, every day of course. [You, tosser]

    (My added finishing line)

Darcy finished off with something along the lines of 'Well I hope it goes well and we aren't all talking about the massive vandalism, cost and about someone who gets killed for trying these bikes when they don't know what they are doing'!

Roughly translated as, I really hope it all goes wrong and even if it doesn't we'll be on air saying it did.
