ok, third snap from the aquaculchies adventure, the fuschai house, visible for miles around, deserted for fifty years?fuschiahouse.jpg

I think this photo was taken looking towards Ardara from near Meenacurrin / Laconnell overlooking Maghera Bay.

Ardara to Maghera road, not as far down as Laconnel. Spectacular.

We had to slide back down a cliff to get back to the road.

    let's see if this works,

Congrats to NWA for the id.

Thanks Durnish, a lot of effort with this one. I hope your not expecting us all to have multiple shots and video of any future posts. You may be raising the stakes a bit too high for the rest of us, well me anyway.:D

Is it down by dunfanaghy/ portnablagh? First one looking out towards horn head?

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 24,016 Mod ✭✭✭✭TICKLE_ME_ELMO

Sort of yeah. I just realised that I don't know the actual name of what we're looking at in the first one, pretty sure it is horn head.

They're not taken from Dunfanaghy though.

I knew it was Horn Head alright, I was just trying to figure where they were taken from... Ards forest park up on a height?

Nope, not Ards. You're on the wrong side of the water there.

Is this fort over the Portnoo direction.
How would i go about visiting this place, direction wise?
Is it accessible with children?I only intend going as far as the waters edge.

Hi irlpic - yes, this is Doon Fort. It's on Doon Lough close to Portnoo. It's a while since I visited it.

The fort is marked on OSI maps - zoom in on Portnoo here [OSI maps.ie]. Doon lake is approx 1 mile south of Portnoo. The island is privately owed - so the the only way to get to the fort is to rent a boat from the owner. He'll rent a boat to you for ~ €20. His name is McHugh (Paddy? can't remember). He's a bit of a character. You can see the road up to his house on the map (coordinates XY: 570858, 898025). It's well worth the effort, especially if the weather is nice. The day I went out, the lake was quite choopy and was a bit of an effort.

You can however see the fort from the road. Also, if you are in the area - there's a nice visitors centre close by in Kilcooley [dolmen centre], where you can get the lowdown on all the local archeaology.

    Hope this helps
