In my view, any airtime metric is a crude tool. The best approach is editorial balance, rather than a stopwatch.

Which is a valid argument but doesn't that place the power in the hands of the media to determine what we should hear. Let them judge the arguments but not pre-judge them.

The media have that power, whether or not they have a 50:50 airtime metric imposed.

The requirement should be one of objective impartiality, no more.

I'd accept the requirement to be 'fair and balanced' as reasonable, given that it's legally binding.

Regardless of the merit or otherwise of the arguments put forward by each side, how can it be determined what the right balance should be.

Surely the only fair way would be to abide by the will of the people (novel suggestion) and give 53 per cent of air time to the No side.
Should we apply the same logic in the run-up to the next general election and give Fianna Fáil four times as much air-time as Labour?

I see no problem with that as long as the audience gets to throw eggs and pies at FF members
