If you are serious then take a look at the Garda Reserve thread http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055178746 there & any further questions you may have about being a Reserve I am certain people will answer for you over there. Was their something in particular you were enquiring about as a matter of interest?

No one knows when the next recruitment will be.

The minimum age for applying for the AGS is 18 yrs old. If you feel mature enough to be a Garda then I say go for it. If you want to have a life like your friends will have say in college etc then Id wait for a while and then see if you want to join up

Hey all. Just wondering has anyone been to the open days in Templemore in the past? If so, have they been worthwhile/informative? And does anyone reckon there will be an open day this year? Thanks

There was one in April AFAIR so I dont think there will be another one too soon unfortunately.
I went to one last September. It was pretty informative, they bring you around and show you the college and talk you through everything. There were also different units like the Mounted Unit and Traffic Corps etc there who answered any questions and that kind of thing. It was reassuring to be able to see the college so from that point of view it was worthwhile. Hope that helps ;)

My boyfriend is currently in phase one and he heard rumours there might be an intake of 50 in august. I hope for those of you waiting it's true because I know how panicky he was waiting to be called. Good luck!

I just finished the LC and was hoping to join the Gardai. Am I better off going to college getting a degree and then apply say around 2013ish? Would it be a better option?

No, you have to apply through public appointments services www.publicjobs.ie as they handle the first part of your application:D:D
If you have any other Qs on Reserves post in the reserve thread, there are loads of people in there who will have the answers!!:p

yes i m sure you need your LC to apply. . Have a look in the garda reserve thread theres people there who should be able ta help you out :Dhttp://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showt...p?t=2055178746

Yes, you need the LC or an equivalent qualification (like GCSEs if you're from Britain, for example). They're very strict on this! You need English, Maths, and another language ... and two or three other LC subjects.

No, it is not compulsory, there are many in the GR programme without the LC.

There is a very detailed form that you have to fill out when looking for an exemption but it is no more arduous than the other paperwork along the way.

But this thread is more about joining the full-time, for which you will need a leaving cert.

An Bord Snip to recommend cutting Garda numbers by 2000. :(

    http://www.tv3.ie/article.php?article_id=16368&locID=1.2.139.&pagename=home

This is crap. Cant believe it.

"And after years of consistently boosting garda numbers, the Government will be told to cut Garda personnel by up to 2,000 and Army numbers by up to 1,000."

Bare in mind though it is still only a recommendation at this point. No finite decisions have been made yet.

Even though it's only a recommendation it's still bad news for those of us waiting for a recruitment drive. AGS can hardly recruit when they are being told to lose as many as 2,000 personnel.

I hope jobs aren't lost in AGS. Losing your job is bad enough, but going through the long recruitment process only to be told that secure job may not be as secure as you thought must be quite demoralising.

I'm just thankful in this economic climate that I have no mortgage or kids. I wouldn't want to have that pressure right now and my heart goes out to those who do. :(

That to me screams of them paving the way to not have to replace the Gardai due to retire this year. Not good news for us at all but I wouldnt be too worried if I were a member tbh.

did anyone ring garda HQ or recruitment recently to see if they have any news or views on possible intakes?

If the government go ahead with this recomendation then all that will happen is a nice retire package or lump sum will be offered, they wont be able to force anyone out, and in a year or twos time when they have realised there mistake they will have to recruit again. However did i read on here before that when you graduate you are offered a contract for a certain length of time, could they just not renew your contract? either way this could just be flying a kite to see the public reaction. And i cant see how they will cut Guarda numbers when there is a massive surplus of clerical staff in HSE.

Guys' there couldn't possibly be a slash in Garda numbers. With crime
at record high levels I'm sure the general publics' outcry will be far to
big to ignore...again they put in "cut would be subjected to the ministers
discretion" they done the same wit employment and promotions within the
public sector when the first emergency budget came into effect.

Someone somewhere inside the Dail might just pop back into reality
and see thats its actually more Gardai we need and not less.Maybe
it's my heart ruling my head but I think most of Us here understand
that they couldn't possibly Cut Garda numbers.
