Can you post the 5 categories and associated times for kippure, so we can all work out our level?

I only have two data points to work with and I'm only guessing that Ryan is the same weight as me, but putting in some huge assumptions, fudge factors and dodgy maths I get:

    Untrained: over 17 minutes
    Cat 5: under 17 minutes
    Cat 4: under 14:51
    Cat 3: under 13:00
    Cat 2: under 11:25
    Cat 1: under 10:15
    Exceptional: under 9:22
    World class: under 8:39

There is significant overlap between categories, I've chosen the midpoint of each overlap.

Using power/weight means that being heavier doesn't change the time<>category relationship, since a more powerful rider will have more mass to carry up.

Obviously a more powerful rider will win on a flatter TT, but that's a different story.

I have my doubts about my methodology, so please don't judge too harshly!

Lumen, what software are you using? Try WKO+ if you havn't already done so, i think you'll like it. You can download a free trial from www.trainingpeaks.com

Thanks Lumen, I can make do with a rough estimate of my awesome cycling skills. I don't own a cycle computer so all my cycling is done by guess work.

If someone can persuade Lance to pop up Kippure when he comes for the ToI I can get another data point.

I even promise not to take any hair samples at the summit.

We will need it plotted out on sportstracks with the start point and stop point marked and the times shown. Also no shortcuts through the grass as some people here did to shave off a few secs.:pac:

As part of the saturday spin .. I decided to time myself up Kippure ... started off fecking brilliantly ... By 50mts ... The Claw and Hurin were eating my dust ... I was flying ...

Up the slight incline, I started breathing a bit heavily ... slip a couple of cogs lower ... no worries .. keep up the cadence .. Across the bridge .. and I am still on the bike ..

Have a look up .. and the road seems to be going straight up ..it didn't look like this 3 weeks back .. no worries .. still have a couple of cogs to get to the lowest gear. My breathing is losing its rhythm at this stage .. but I tell myself .. its only a couple of switch backs and you are there.

First switchback was coming up pretty quickly. I see a couple walking down ... she was cute ... suck the tummy in ... stop the heavy pervy breathing .. a hi with a smile ... and I have lost 15secs .. crap ... but no heart attack yet ... think positive thoughts.

No worries ... last switch back in sight ... and I can see the bollards .. 100 yards to go ... my pump falls off ... instinct takes over and I stop ... and then I hear a voice in my head ... you big idiot .. it would have been easier to pick it up on the way down ... couldn't get clipped in .. so had to walk the last 100 yards to the bollards ...

16mins in all ... but then I thought .. if I had cycled all the way up .. it would have been 16:30 .. :o ...

And hence an idea began to form ... 2 bikes ... 1 at the start ... and 1 at the middle flat bit ... cycle to the 1st climb ... run up the incline .. pick up 2nd bike for the flat bit ... and then run up the switchbacks .. I am sure I would have shaved off the 6 mins if I just ran.:)

And oh .. by the way ... while I was in a daze due to lack of oxygen supply to my brain .. The Claw overtook me ... and I only saw him coming down ... unless it was his twin .. or unless he has a time machine. I also saw Emty and a few other coming down ... not going up ... maybe there is something to this time machine theory ....

Gave this a go yesterday during my spin. Took me a whole 16 minutes 40 seconds which thankfully just gets me out of Lumen's Untrained category and into the (relative) face-saving sanctuary of Cat 5 :D

To be honet though, for me this was all about completing, not competing. The body and mind both wanted to jack it in at that same point about 150yards from the bollards where I had to get off last time - it's just so demoralising to look up at that corner and see another climb and corner in front of you. The joy I felt when I crossed those bollards though was a great feeling - made all the better by the sound couple that were watching and waiting for me at the end with a healthy dollop of admiration and kind words which the ego was only too willing to lap up in its vulnerable state. They actually passed me from the opposite way as I was going up the Wicklow Gap and they beeped me and I could see the guy going 'No Way! That's your man from......'.

I reckon there's a bit of time I could make up in the early stages - was definitely riding within myself up the first hill as I was fearful I wouldn't make it in the end. Now I'm thinking no matter what I do in the early parts the last 500m will be hell so I might aswell push early and then regroup just before that bit.

My Garmin is now resting up trying to recover from the shock of dishing out gradient readings of %23 at the end (is that even possible?).

My sincere and utter respect to anyone managing to do that run in under 14 minutes. Impressive stuff.

    Frank,

Good effort. Corrected for weight (i.e. if you maintained your power at my weight) you would probably scrape under 13 minutes. Even at 80kg you could do around 14 minutes.

This is just a test of climbing ability which severely disadvantages those who carry around lots of useless muscle.

I'm 95kg of pure mayhem by the way! Could literally hear gravity trying to bitch slap me back down the hill there towards the end :)

Well I was off work yesterday and it was a cracking day so I decided to take a drive up to kippure. Weather was great until I got there, drizzling at the bottom, couldn't see the top.
I'll make my excuses first ;) This was my first trip out since I fractured my big toe about a month ago :)
Anyway I got to over the bridge and quads started burning....=unfit :(
Kept going, now in a cloud/pissing rain, couldn't see but that wasn't a problem, the main problem was I couldn't catch my breath. I had to stop :(
After I got to the bottom I had a look at sportstracker/garmin & realised I was only about 300-400m from the top, gutted to say the least.
    I was at 13m17s when I stopped.

I was that annoyed I drove straight back to fairview and did a spin to sutton & back, beautiful weather, was happy with my avg's after the failure on kippure, 28kph out & 34kph back.

Here's a couple of pics, visiblity (looks better on camera?), Me...b*llixed, and NO MOUNTAIN bikes allowed....doesn't say anything about road/hybrids ;)

Did I pass you on the Greenhills rd today by any chance?

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,604 ✭✭✭petethedrummer

Did Kippure again today. Was totally goosed from football yesterday and as a result added 2 mins to my previous effort. Today's time was 14:45 :o. Even with all my gears working.

Quite possibly, I went out that direction. Blue jersey, black cap, no helmet.

btw, anyone know what the hill is called that lives somewhere north between Firhouse and Kilbride, that has a golf course next to it? That's a beauty. Butter Mountain?

    That's Boharnabreena I think you're talking about.

The road that goes past the golf course is Ballinascorney lower. If you turn left at the sharp bend at the bottom of the descent it'll take you up Butter mountain.

Pretty sure that's the Embankment..it's a steady gradient, kicks up a bit at the end. Nice road.

I used the Maymyride satellite picture of the Kippure road and stuck pins in it from the middle of the main road up to near the back wall of the walled car park around the mast. I'm guessing here as I've never been up there.

I didn't do the hill climb, doubt I could do it, and don't plan to do it.

A few gradient charts were posted in the thread.

I thought you might like to see the percentage gradient in 10 metre chunks of road.

Yeah, I was wondering why it was taking so long to load this page on my phone.

I remember this TT like it was yesterday. Meter 3432 was a total bitch.

Just wondering out loud. I know you can't draw many conclusions on a starting field of 16 people. But the three lads who came first were over 6ft tall. Now I know its all about power to weight ratio. Still, aren't the best climbers usually under 5'10? Are there any Colombians on boards?

    6ft of awesomeness! :D

    Sorry, I'm finished now.

Ah shuutup. I'm still waiting on the sprint challenge. Empty (FLAT) road. Head to head. Quarters, semis, final.

Need a flat TT rather than head to head sprints, although they could be fun too. Saw it happening when over in Canada once. It's just like the track. Everyone crawls for the first 200 meters, then blasts it for the last third. They did it on a pan flat strip.
