Following on from the Favorite Enterprise thread,

What is your favorite from the Star Trek universe?

Mine probably is the Romulan D'deridex class Warbird

    Federation Vessel:

The Akira Class, It just looks so damned sleek!

    Akira-class.jpg

    Non-federation vessel:

    Klingon1.JPG

Bird of Prey, simple but elegant, loved seeing squadrons of these in the Dominion War on DS9.

    Spoon with nacelles
*apologies* the pic would not open and I assumed you meant the Voyager Intrepid

    Mine would be D'deridex also

    That's not an Intrepid Class.

    Voyager was an Intrepid Class.

My own favourite is a toss between:

    Romulan D'deridex Class Warbird:
Really wierd at-first to see back in TNG (with that huge empty space in the middle), this thing is a monster. When the Enterprise went up against one of these, you knew that they'd be screwed in a fight.

Jem Hadar Battlecruiser (the HUGE one):
Another monster. This one gets my vote just for killing those damned Red Squad kids. Nog, you're such a tool....

    Borg Tactical Cube:
Yes....big again. Right when I thought the Borg were dead and gone ...this bad ass War Cube comes along, and smashes the Delta Flyer to bits. Nice...classic deadly Borg-stuff.
Although if they weren't apparently so easy to destroy, the classic Cube would get my vote (damn you Voyager!)

Enterprise had better speed and weapons AFAIK

    Better D'deridex photo

Always loved the Defiant. Not as good looking as other ships, but theres just something about it that i always loved. Maybe its the kick ass weapons.
    ds9_defiant_firing.jpg
Also loved the Negh'var and Vorcha Klingon ships.

Oh yeah! I forgot about the Defiant, nice little ship!

    "Little ship???"

Always loved that line. Riker getting a sly dig in.

heehee, it is little, in comparison to some of the other ships!

something i noticed in first contact and DS9 afterwards. all the federation ships are quite small. with the obvious exception of the galaxy class and the Excelcior class. The ambassidor was never really shown enough to leave much of an impression.

i know the soverign is suppose to be the biggest and the best, but everything else seems relegated to little more than a saucer with nacells.

    Akira
    Nebula
    Steamrunner
    Cheyeane
    Constellation
    Centaur
Defiant (though it made up for it in other ways:D)
    Saber
    Miranda

Well if you look at our modern day navy fleets, you have a capital ship (carrier/cruisers) flanked by a host of much smaller ships.

Also you could look to the fact that the majority of Starfleet is meant to be for exploration and not intimidation

    Cheyeane
    Constellation
    Centaur
Defiant (though it made up for it in other ways:D)
    Saber
    Miranda

    Well let's see...

    Lengths:

Soverign - 680m (Star Trek Chronology)
Galaxy - 641 m (Star Trek The Next Generation Technical Manual)
Ambassador - 526m (Star Trek Chronology)
Excelsior - 467m (Star Trek Chronology)
Constitution (Refit) - 305m (Star Trek Encyclopedia)
Constitution - 289m (Star Trek Encyclopedia)

    (So that's 1701, -A, -B, -C, -D and -E covered)

Akira - 464.43, (Star Trek: DS9 Technical Manual)
Nebula - 442m (Star Trek: DS9 Technical Manual)
    Steamrunner - 244m
    Cheyenne - ??? est 394m
    Constellation - 231m
Centaur - 381m (Star Trek: DS9 Technical Manual)
Defiant - 171m (Star Trek: DS9 Technical Manual)
    Saber - 190m
    Miranda - ??? est 230m
    Intrepid - 343 m (Star Trek Encyclopedia)

    Non Fed:

    Romulan D'Deridex - 1041m (Star Trek: DS9 Technical Manual)

    Klingon D7 - 228m
Klingon "Bird of Prey" - est c100m
Klingon Vor'Cha - 481m (Star Trek Deep Space Nine Technical Manual)

Cardassian Galor/Keldon - 372m (Star Trek Deep Space Nine Technical Manual)

    Ferengi D'Kora - 487m

A lot of size perspective problems comes from the TNG and the first four/five seasons of DS9 (and possibly Voyager seasons 1-3) using miniatures rather than CGI models. Some were not built to scale, there were several model sizes of the Enterprise D- camera perspective and motion, composition techniques etc. all caused inconsistencies.

D'Deridex and NechVar are the main capital ships of the other two main powers

    They do dwarf the Enterprise

    What size was the Valdore?

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,905 ✭✭✭User45701

n1 niska - dont suppose you know the size of the klingon negvar? that ****er is huge compared to galors, D7's or even vorcha's

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,414 ✭✭✭✭Blazer

I remember I stared a thread on this last year :) even had a poll ;)

Definitely the Defiant or Enterprise E...but really the Defiant for it's mean looks..,,cloaking weapons and disruptors...
It just wouldn't have been the same with phasers.

I have a suspicion, somehow, that there was a super large flag ship NegVar and relatively small normal ships

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,456 ✭✭✭Niska

The Negh'var is listed as 682m (Star Trek Deep Space Nine Technical Manual)

    Size comparison with the Enterprise-E:

    http://www.ditl.org/index.php?daymain=/sizshipchart.php?klineghvar&9011

there was also the mirror-universe's Regeant's Flagship - basically an upscaled Negh'Var:

Is there anywhere to get the displacement of the vessels?

the Enterprise E is a long ship but still smaller than the Enterprise D, i imagine

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,456 ✭✭✭Niska

Well, for displacement, you'll need one very large bath-tub...

    Eureka!!

still would displace a certain amount of space dust, atmospheric gas, nebula material
    so there:P

Borg cube FTW. who the hell needs aerodynamics in space?

Well the Intrepid class was designed with atmospheric flight and landing capability in mind, but yeah there's no need for so many ships to have aerodynamic tendencies.

But it makes them look cooler....

Also from a more practical point of view we've always designed ships etc to be aerodynamic maybe it's just a hangover from that way of thinking for so long...

i remember hearing the reason was to better suit the warp field or some malarkey like that
