Pronounciation of the word "vehicle"???

Ok...not a very serious question but one of life's little irritations...why do the Guards pronounce the word "vehicle" with a short "e" instead of "vee"? They seem to be the only people in the world who do this and it seems consistent across the force??

They see it done on the cop shows.

The same way they say "sir" with a higher "r" than is necessary.

Though that dictionary gives a pronunciation of VAGUE-uh-ree for 'vagary', which I'd pronounce vuh-GAY-ree.

Professor Terry Dolan, U.C.D., author of the Hiberno English Dictionary states that the clichéd garda version of "vehicle" is, in fact, the correct version - from the Latin.

Yes. All Gardai are scholars of the classics. We knew Homer before he was a Simpson (and not just the Tracey Ullman Show either).

Where it originated I dont know but in present day its a joke, Gardai have sense of humours you know.
