Guys, I've spent the last 6 hours trying to fix my iphone (non 3G) and I cant figure it out so all help gratefully appreciated.
I have the phone unlocked for months now and it was working perfectly but tonight when I connected to iTunes I stupidly pressed the button to update the software...It wouldn't back up and my only option was to continue without backing up....disaster !!
The phone is now locked and I can't unlock it or use iLiberty at all. iTunes keeps talking about recovery mode and I have restored it hundreds of times. When I press "Go for it" on iLiberty it tells me there is a problem communicating with the device and to make sure it is paired with iTunes and is in Normal mode!! iTunes tells me that the SIM card isn't supported and I need to put the original sim back in before it can activate the phone which I don't have any more.
I have even read about and downloaded PwnageTool_2.0.3.1.tbz which I can't open !!!
Please please help or even tell me where I can get it fixed before I pull out whats left of my hair!.
    Thanks in advance..

Use Quickpwn - see the tutorial on www.iclarified.com for instructions & download links.

I have the iphone working perfectly now except for one thing....the phone itself doesn't work!
There is just no signal at all, just keeps saying call failed.....any suggestions?

Does your carrier's name even appear in the top left corner, next to the signal strength bars? It would seem the unlock has failed, just the jailbreak worked (which would allow you to use everything but the phone part). When the phone is jailbroken but not unlocked, you can see a "No SIM", "No Service" or simply nothing (and no signal strength) on the display. I'm on a Mac and use the Pwnage tool, which I think is what Quickpwn is based on but I haven't used it - maybe you could try it from scratch? Otherwise, someone else can help you out. I wouldn't panic though, these days it's pretty easy to just go back to square one and try again.

Thanks. Last night there was nothing, no operator name, no signal. Today it just says no service. Unless anyone has any other suggestions I'll try again although I'm not looking forward to syncing it again as it took hours last time.

Has anyone had to return a phone they got in the US for warranty repairs?? If so, how did they go about doing it??

My screen has a load of dead pixels on it... Was talking to a guy in apple yest who was saying id need to send it to the states, i've a cousin that lives there. He'd need to activate it and then send it in for repair for me...

    Is that the only way??

The hugely slow backups were meant to be a thing of the past with firmware 2.1 - personally, I never experienced them though there were reports of lots of people that did. If you don't have anything hugely important on the phone, maybe try setting it up as a new phone on the next attempt (you can still sync back your contacts, etc from your PC)? From what you just said, it definitely seems like the unlock hasn't worked. Unfortunately, other than suggesting that you try it from scratch, I don't know much about QuickPwn/WinPwn - Pwnage on Mac OS X has worked like a champ for me every time with the 2.x firmware (I was using iLiberty+ before that and many, many solutions before that too...) releases.

The mrs and I both have 1st gen iPhones "imported" from the usa. Both on 2.1 firmware and working grand. One major difference is that mine has absolute crap sound from the phone speakers compared to jets. Anyone any ideas why?

Might be a silly question but have you installed OpenSSH? It's available in Cydia. SSH was not there by default when I upgraded.

The other day, my mobilephone app stopped working, I press the phone button and it comes up and then crashes again. I can still accept calls, and make calls through my contacts but the usual screen doesn't appear, it goes straight to my springboard and I get the little bar at the top saying "press to return to call", I press it and it disappears??

The only way to hang up a call on my end is to turn my phone off!!

I did a bit of googling and it sounds like an Installer app called Kate caused this for alot of people, but I don't have Kate.

Any ideas before I have to do a full restore tonight (really don't want to, I hate losing all my SMS's, notes etc.)

turns out Kate is installed on my phone, I never realised it was there until I was messing around with my Settings just now, hopefully I'll uninstall it tonight and it'll sort out the problem.

    EDIT: Worked

Good afternoon, just wondering how you got on - basically my friend's daughter did something similar and I've tried using iliberty and ziphone, but appears as if it remains sim locked (firmware 1.1.4).... Any solutions?

    Thanks.

SMS Alert Problem on Firmware version 2.1

I upgraded my first gen iphone to firmware version 2.1. It works great but unfortunately the SMS sounds/vibrations have stopped working. They worked for a while on this firmware version but now dont. I've checked the sound settings etc and tried turning the phone on and off. I read that sometimes if you turn on and off "Location Services" that it works but mine doesnt unfortunately. The ringer and vibration alert still work for calls so i'm sure theres nothing physically broken. Does anyone know how to fix this SMS alert problem?

I had this issue a factory reset cleared it, a very annoying issue, funnily enough when I contacted o2's support the guy on the phone told me he didn't think there was any point in doing that and i should bring it back to a store for replacement etc. i didn't fancy the long delay in that and thought whats the harm it worked so all was well with the world again.

Just a quick note to say that EirText & EirText Pro have been updated to v1.4. You can now send messages on O2 again (previously broken) as well as Vodafone & Meteor. O2 users can now schedule messages from within EirText Pro. See the App Store for more info.

Eircom don't allow any mail relayed through their servers unless it comes from one of their ip addresses. So, unless you are logged into an Eircom wireless network through your phone, setting your outgoing server to an Eircom one won't work. Try setting your outgoing mail server to the server of O2, Vodafone or Meteor, depending on which one you are with.

Is this a new thing??As far as I remember it was working last week with my PPC before I got the Iphone.

You wouldnt happen to know the mail server of Meteor by anychance?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,234 ✭✭✭Mr Bloat

Nah, Eircom have it set like that for a long time. It's the same if you have an eircom mail address and use a different provider for broadband.

From memory, meteor's mail server is mail.mymeteor.ie but I'm not 100% about that.

Edit: your ppc was probably set with Meteor's outgoing mail server, if it was working all along on that so you can check the settings on that, if you still have it.

Hi guys, I am trying to unlock my iphone as it relocked when i connected to itune (automatic update). I have restored my phone how long should it take to unlock i'm using Ziphone. does the sim card have to be in when unlocking

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,341 ✭✭✭tw0nk

byrner1, I reckon you are best using winpwn ( http://www.winpwn.com/index.php/Main_Page ) or quickpwn if you are an mac user.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 129 ✭✭byrner1

thanks tw0nk, will try that . do i need to have my sim card inserted when doing it , how long should it take?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,341 ✭✭✭tw0nk

byrner1, go to this site, easiest and best tutorials for unlocking phone, http://www.iclarified.com/entries/index.php?caid=2&scid=11

You can leave your sim in no probs, be careful at the moment when doing unlock as there is a new firmware version out, do NOT install that new one.

Stupid question on my part maybe but what benefit to me other than using the iPhone on a different carrier would unlocking do for me. Is the software etc that i would get access to?
I do see the benefit if i went home to Ireland i could put a prepaid Sim into it and avoid international data and call charges.

Another question.Just connected my iphone to itunes and theres a new update 2.2.Do I update now or wait till its hacked?

Also do apple force updates on you or could you in theory leave 2.1 on it?

I have auto updating turned off but Im worried that the phone will stop working or something(Apple newbie here)

If your phone is a first gen phone and I presume it is as you asked the question here

    Then update away

You can update through itune if the phone has already been pwned then it will remain unlocked but you will lose the jailbreak ( cydia/installer and anything you installed from them) If you choose to restore to 2.2 you will lose the jailbreak and the unlock but you can just quickpwn to unlock again

To re jailreak just use quickpwn or you could create a new pwned firmware using pwnagetool

There are new quickpwn and pwnagetools available 2.2 and 2.2.1

Thanks for that lads.As I said before Im new to the iphone.

Is there any advantage to updating yet?I suppose what I really want to know is that in the future will I have to update or could I just keep using 2.1 forever since I dont fancy having to reinstall everything again.
