For the production modules, yes. A lot of people in my class went in with the idea that they wanted to do video, but then have gone on to love audio or photography in first year. Usually video is most popular and competitive for places, but in my class, seemingly for the first time ever, photography seems to be more popular than video.

I won't be denied a place based on numbers will I? I've planned ahead and really want to do photography with the goal of getting some sort of photo-journalist job in the long run.

They've changed the system this year. Last year it was based on results, because video was oversubscribed, so the top 25 people who picked video got it. Apparently that system was chaos so they've changed it this year, places are first come first served, so that basically means I've to be up at 6am on the first day of online registration to guarantee my place in Video! Apparently the numbers are really even between the three in my year (usually there's loads all wanting to do one stream), so there's a good chance everyone might get their first choice. If the system is the same again next year, all you have to do is be up at 6am to register on the first day! Then you'll get photography fine. At the end of first year, you'll get a good idea of how many want to do each module.

I honestly don't know which of the three I'd choose tbh. Video automatically stands out to me but photography could be really interesting too.

Ah sure, we'll get through 1st year first!

I wasn't in Communications but I shared a few modules with the CS students in first year. Two points:

    1. Des McGuinness is your new favourite person. Seriously, it's impossible not to like him.

    2. Comms has ridiculous numbers of hot chicks.

    This guy speaks the truth.

(Another non CS student but sharing some of the modules)

Guys, could any of you tell tell me when the 1st year timetable will be posted online? I see they have the 07/08 timetables up for CS, and I was just wondering will our own be following shortly?

Also, will the timetable itself differ much, or wil it be pretty similar to what the outgoing 1st years had?

Good point mind you we probably won't see them till the 22nd.

If I get it during MS orientation I will forward them on. :p

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 237 ✭✭goodgodholmes

No, sure we're only barely starting in October. There's a Reading Week (in which you read loads... cough, cough) in mid-November.

I'm starting too. And like Mehfesto2 have not yet received ANY in information regarding dates, classes or timetables. So any info or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
I don't know anyone going to DCU, let alone doing Communications, so I'm really nervous about starting. I haven't even been on campus.
Having said that, it does look like an insanely fun course.

I'll be coming in from Dundalk. & thanks for the vote of confidence :) Great to hear that the students are friendly, it kind of makes the whole thing seem a little less daunting. Nerves have kind of mingled with excitement at this point and now I just want to get started.

Ye won't be getting your timetable until you start up but the above is last years 1st year timetable to give you an idea. Don't worry, you won't be in all of those blocks. Some of them are split into multiple groups.

And don't worry, it always seems to be a little late for your stuff to arrive in the post, but it'll come. You'll hear from them soon.

Thank johnny_ultimate. I was getting a little worried. But I still think I might pop down because I'm a transfer student and my portal page still has all my old courses' stuff on it. Might just head down to registry during the week to make sure everything's okay.

Im really excited about starting now. Will finally be doing something I enjoy, by the looks of it. Can't wait!

I called the registry today and they told me I won't receive anything from them till registration (10-19 Sept). Sooo till then I'll just be guessing what it's all going to be like. :D I am also nervous cuz I haven't received any info from campus residences as well... But i hope that will arrive soon as well and I won't be late with the payment... 2 balls in 2 weeks... can't wait! :D

Thanks a lot. I know its from last year but having the basic framework is actually a great help. I'm commuting, so knowing the times is excellent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,908 ✭✭✭Daysha

I won't know anyone heading up there either, (the only 6th year out of over 200 in my school going to DCU!) but thats good in a way too, in that you get to completely start from afresh and don't have to worry with hanging round or worrying bout other you know already.

Can't believe its still another 4 weeks away. Hopefully it'll be as good as everyone says it is!

Awww you serious?? My schools like ten mins away from dcu so theres alot going :)
But seriously never heard any bad reports my sister did education officer and worked alot with 1st years and she never had a communications student have any problems with their course anyway so thats a relief!

I know the 3 people but i can't wait to meet more people it's sooo exciting like. Is everyone communting or you got a place or what? I really wanted to get myself a place but im like 10 mins away so gona save my money for the partying side and the likes!!!!!!

I hope that timetables similiar these year its amazing friday off and not in til 1 on monday oh wow :)

Does anyone else think it's crazy everyones going back to school? Are we're not :P

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 227 ✭✭giveliberty

I'm Seán by the way, might be handy to put names to... well, not faces but screen-names!
What societies are people planning on joining?

Every event in DCU is called the ______ Ball. The only ones that are actually fancy are the Clubs & Socs Ball and the Graduation Ball. The others, like the Orientation Ball and Fresher's Ball are just like normal nights out and a great way to meet people.
