Bad news... the nbcolympics.com site won't allow non-US ip addresses to watch their coverage. Is there anywhere else we can see the shooting?

If you've got satellite (and I think FTA will be good enough) EuroSport are showing the Olyimpics pretty much continuously.

The women's air rifle final is on at 02:30 GMT on Saturday morning. Only for 15 minutes, but that's definitely on their schedule.

That's all I can find at the moment. I'll keep searching and post anything I find here. The problem with RTE is they don't list what they're going to cover or at what times, it's just a blob of Olympic Coverage for X hours.

    From the UK Eurosport site:
Russian marksman Sergei Alifirenko, who was a gold medallist in the men's 25-metre rapid fire pistol at the Sydney Olympics, is to miss the Beijing Games.
700f561a9baf788e9a6657084de9744b.jpg He had eye illness three weeks before the journey to China", Russian shooting coach Oleg Lapkin said.

He is being replaced by Leonid Ekimov.
It was a bitter blow for the 49-year-old lieutenant-colonel who four years ago in Athens landed a bronze medal behind arch rival Ralf Schumann of Germany in the same event.
    Reuters

That's a really bad break. As someone who has also suffered with eye infections, they really can be extremely debillitating and make shooting impossible.

BBC Freeview are also showing the Women's air rifle final from 03:30am to 04:00am.

This is referred to as 'red button' coverage for digital viewers and is on Freeview 1. Red button coverage is also available on the BBC Sports website.

I'm just clipping the rest from the BBC sports schedule and pasting it here. You can also see the schedule here

    Saturday 9th
Olympic Shooting Highlights: Day One Satellite/Cable 5 | 11.00pm - 12.00am: Highlights from day one, including the Women's 10m Air Rifle and the Men's 10m Air Pistol.

    Sunday 10th
Olympic Shooting Women's 10m Air Pistol and Men's Trap Freeview 2 | 5.00am - 5.30am: Live coverage from the shooting competition.
    Olympic Shooting Women's 10m Air Pistol and Men's Trap Freeview 3 | 11.15am - 12.00pm: Coverage of the women's 10m air pistol and the men's trap finals.
    Olympic Shooting Women's 10m Air Pistol and Men's Trap Satellite/Cable 6 | 2.45pm - 4.00pm: Coverage of the women's 10m air pistol and the men's trap finals.

I'll add more as I pick them up, but it's fairly comprehensive. As you can see, you'll have at least three chances to see Derek Burnett in action (providing he gets to the final I think).

    From the ICPSA website:
    thumbnail.php?file=2008_Olympic_Practice_D._Burnett_3_847303596.jpg&size=article_medium

Now that the long wait for the commencement of the xxix Olympiad is almost over, all eyes will move east to Beijing and tomorrows opening ceremony

One person who will not be participating in this ceremony however will be the ICPSA's own Derek Burnett for whom Friday 8th August 2008 will be the final day of preparation for his quest for Olympic success and he will be found at the Beijing Shooting Range CTF for the official practice session along with the rest of those athletes who will be competing in the Olympic Trap event.

Saturday 9th August will see the first shots fired in the Olympic Trap qualifying rounds at approx. 2am Irish time with each competitor completing 75 targets on day one.

Day two will also start at approx. 2am Irish time and when each competitor has completed a further 50 targets and the make up of the final is known, the final round of 25 targets which will decide the destination of this years medals is scheduled for approx. 8am Irish time.

We would like to wish Derek every success in the days ahead and we are sure that the capable hands of High Performance Programme Director Kevin Kilty and Professor Peter Terry will ensure that Derek is well positioned to "give it his best shot".

RTE has promised comprehensive coverage of the event and the programme schedule should be closely watched in the days ahead for further details and we will post any additional information if or when it becomes available.

(By the way, RTE is listing Derek Burnett's live coverage at 0355 on Friday night/Saturday morning on RTE2)

    From the Indo:
5 Irish stars to follow in Beijing
Who's our best chance of a medal?

That’s the inevitable query from ‘Seosamh Public’ every time Ireland step into the Olympic Arena, no matter what the odds.

The truth is there are no clear medal contenders from Ireland’s team of 54 in Beijing, but, given the support structures now in place, there’s no excuse for not rising to the challenge any more. And of those who have the best chance of excelling in their widely-differing fields,

here’s five Irish whose progress should definitely be worth following over the next fortnight.

    DEREK BURNETT (38)

    Trap Shooting

Burnett’s first competition, aged 11, was, almost literally, a turkey-shoot! It was around Christmas, Dustin’s cousins were the prizes and, following his father into shooting, he was the youngest competitor by about 39 years.

He didn’t specialise in trap (clay-pigeon) shooting until seeing it in the Atlanta Olympics, and, in a sport that doesn’t ‘look good on TV’, is Ireland’s most invisible worldclass athlete.

In 2002, when he was part of the Irish team who’d won team gold at the World Championships, he was thrilled to see an RTE crew to greet them in Dublin airport’s arrivals hall, only to discover they had come to film some returning Irish dancers!

A former electronics engineer from Longford, who set up his own business selling sports ammunition after Sydney to allow him more time to train, Burnett’s easy-going demeanour belies his international status.

He trains between Ireland and Italy, which has ideal shooting conditions and more shooting centres than Dublin has golf courses.

He’s been ranked top five in the world, has won silver and bronze at World Cup competitions and in Athens, where he finished joint seventh, he missed a place in the top six final by just two clays. The margins are minuscule, but he’ll be there or thereabouts.

Men's Trap - the one highlighted in green in the event list a few posts back.

  • Registered Users Posts: 39,013 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

Thats what I thought, but he isn't in the list on Paddy power, i fancied a punt on him, as well as china to take the first medal

Edit: They only have double trap up, i missed the word double in the title

For those interested in range design or just interested :) there's a full 360 degree image of the 50m range in Beijing here. You need Java Virtual Machine installed to use it, but there's a link on the page if you don't have it.

Really worth checking out. When the camera pans down range, you can see the baffles which completely block the sky all the way down the range. It's the blueprint for anyone who wants to build a completely safe 50m range.

The firing point and spectator areas are really spectacular as well.

    The 10m range is here.

They don't have a 360 of the Clay Target range :( probably would show up the smog too much :D

Looks flashy, but doesn't seem to be great on content. Inappropriately placed photos from the 2007 National 50m Prone Championships abound on the shooting page

The streaming video seems to be just re-runs or live runs of the TV coverage. I think it'll have to be the Beeb for the shooting I'm afraid. :(

I've only got the ole rabbit's ears at home. I can get rte1 and 2, and sometimes TV3 is actually in colour! (spent all my money on guns )
Can't even view the RTE website here in work as the firewall is in the UK and it's picking up that IP address :eek:

Can you get the BBC website? It's streaming everything it's showing on the TV or satellite channels.

Oh the irony. The rte system thinks I'm in the UK because that's where the firewall is. The BBC system is smart enough to know that even though the firewall is in the UK, my pc is in Ireland.. hence no online BBC coverage!!
Anyway, enough said, back to the original topic :P

Didn't get to see it, but I hear that Finland's flag was carried round the stadium by a target shooter (Juha Hirvi, shoots 50m 3P and 50m prone, won a silver olympic medal last time round and is currently one of the best kneeling shooters in the world).

Watching on the net, no trap yet.
Katerina still in the lead, and Du is down in 4th which is a bit of an upset.
