Cesc in talks to extend his contract.

He still has 6 years left on the current one

OK so we're due to play Milan next week.

Ronaldo is now out(very unfortunate IMO, one of the ture greats)

    Gatuso is still out?

Pato was stretchered off on 3rd Feb and haven't heard anything else about him since.

Heard rumours that Kaka is out as well?

As far as I know, all 3 are rumored to be available for the Champions League match!

Looks like Clichy and Sagna are out for the game this weekend, in addition to the players already missing. I don't see us getting a result.

Neither do I, I'd much rather get knocked out of the FA Cup (let United have a few more games) and then try get a result at home to Milan. We've a tough game against Villa coming up too.

Wenger refuted this today...no talks going on.
It was a strange story because as you say he has 6 years left...Cesc/agent looking for more money?

They are playing like a team that couldn't give a ****. Really pisses me off.

I'd take a 5-0 defeat against United in the cup if it means Arse go there in the league and win...

Unfortunately it doesn't mean that, it just means they got hammered by their closest rivals. Never a good thing even if most of us don't really care about the cup.

I know there are bigger fish to fry this season, but how can most of you not care about the cup, especially when you haven't won anything since 04/05?

I'm a Utd fan and I care about the FA cup every season - no matter how the seasons going.

I really don't get the impression that people don't care about the cup. There are just other bigger things that Arsenal are still in, that will console the fans easily enough, as the poster pointed out though, there is no guarantee they'll win anything.

Yes but how come United were able to show the desire to want to progress and Arsenal werent? Our priorities are in pretty much the same order as yours, is it not a bit sad that some of the players you had today who have never won a trophy with the senior team were disinterested?

    not that we don't care.

if we were out of everything the cup would be massive.

The fact that we are five points clear in the league (about two years before anyone involved with the club expected we could challenge for it) means that the FA cup is always going to be second - third after the CL.

Utd were hungrier today - that's all.

As regards Arsenal not being interested - Could we not say the same about the derby for you last week. Why did city care more about that? - especially since utd were playng for the memory of whoever.
    .

Personally I'd say that after about 15-20 mins, Arsenal realised that winning this game was all but beyond them and gave it up, simple as.

Well if Arsenal can twin the League or European Cup (or both) the 4-0 massacre will be little more than an obscure footnote. However if Arsenal don't win anything...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

Ultimately IMO the FA Cup doesn't matter hugely. What I think it does is kinda add to other success. If you win the FA Cup on its own its a failed season imo. However if you win the league its a successful season, same can be said of the CL.

However, the FA Cup really becomes important I think to add to your league win.

FA Cup on its own is fine, but a poor season
League + Fa Cup just proves you are the absolute best team in England
League + CL just proves you are close to the absolute best team in Europe
League + Fa Cup + CL proves you are the absolute best team in Europe

I don't think there's any reason for Arsenal fans to be devestated, I wouldn't be, once you win the league or the CL. However, losing 5-1 to Spurs then 4-0 to United can't be a nice feeling :P But if you win the league or the CL, I doubt people will care, just like if we just win the FA Cup, I doubt people will care that we beat Arsenal 4-0 when both our sides were not a full strength squad

My take on the match; The two early goals (and 3rd goal) were the fault of the full backs, both squad players. Hoyte and Traore especially were absolutely abysmal. Traore reminded me of a certain defender of the same name. I had to look closely to make sure it was Djimi playing. The two quick goals made it extremely hard to get back into the game and just as Arsenal were pressing a bit, Utd scored the 3rd goal. The team gave up, didn't want to know. Having said that, I'm willing to give Hoyte and Traore the benefit of the doubt because it was some match to be thrown into. So long as they learn from it, they should be better for the experience.

Onwards and hopefully upwards, there are two things that'll decide whether we get a result midweek. One of them is that Flattuso has to do a job on Kaka and the other is that Clichy and Sagna get up the flanks and stretch Milan so that they're not a tight defensive unit like they usually are, this will leave gaps for Ade and Eduardo to take advantage of.

Oh and please go 4-4-2 Arsene. :)

I am not really upset that we got beaten, well I am,but what really annoyed me was the lack of effort by the players. A long trip up to Manchester for many Gooners who deserved better. But you are right, if we win the league of cl, this defeat and the spuds one will all be forgotten.

Not too sure if Sagna is playing, apparently his brother had a heart attack, well that is the rumour going.

0-0 draw at home and score draw away puts Arsenal through;)

Both Milan keepers struggling to make game....I think this tie will finally be the bridge too far for this Milan team. In my eyes it would be a huge upset if they progress.

AC Milan may face a goalkeeping crisis in Wednesday's UEFA Champions League trip to Arsenal FC amid doubts over both Zeljko Kalac and Dida.

Kalac, who has recently replaced Dida as first choice, dislocated a finger on his right hand in training today, while the Brazilian has been undergoing treatment for the back injury he suffered while on the bench during yesterday's 0-0 draw against Parma FC. A club statement read: "AC Milan announces that during today’s training session goalkeeper Zeljko Kalac suffered a dislocation in the index finger on his right hand. His condition will be evaluated tomorrow to ascertain whether he will be available for the trip to London to play Arsenal."

If neither goalkeeper recovers, 38-year-old Valerio Fiori could be called upon to make his UEFA Champions League debut in the first knockout round first leg. He has not played a competitive game since 18 December 2003 when he replaced Christian Abbiati in a Coppa Italia tie against UC Sampdoria, and a Serie A appearance in 2002/03 was his only such opportunity in eight seasons at Milan.

Edit: 'while the Brazilian has been undergoing treatment for the back injury he suffered while on the bench during yesterday's 0-0 draw against Parma FC'...WTF:confused:

Hopefully we get the same reaction from the players that we got after the defeat by Sp*rs. I cant for the life of me work out the total lack of effort yesterday. And in fairness Toure and Gallas were very poor too. Traore and Hoyte getting an unfair amount of stick.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,746 ✭✭✭✭Galvasean

I wouldnt worry too much about the (admittadly heavy) defeat and Im sure the team wont either. they conceded two goals early in quick succession and then decided not to bust themselves up chasing a game theyalmost certainly werent going to win. United punished us emphaticly alright, but chasing the game, not winning and getting enough injuries to mess us up for the Milan game would be a real disaster!

Looking at the massive amounts of injuries to both Arsenal and Milan I think whoever wins on wednesday will be down to who can field 11 players!

Sagna is still away "serious family issues" must be someone sick or dying at home. Hope he's ok, I've become very fond of him very quickly.

With that in mind I'd play Toure at right back and Gallas and Senderos in the centre. Toure and Gallas looked very poor on Saturday and Senderos has done well as Gallas partner and they've looked extremely solid. The thoughts of Hoyte facing AC is also more than a little worrying. Toure would provide a more solid base.

The other big question then is 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 with Hlebn in the hole. I'd definitely go 4-4-2 at home. We need to get a win and a cushion before we travel to Milan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,713 ✭✭✭keano_afc

Well Eduardo on the left is a bloody joke. If you're not gonna play him as an out and out striker, dont play him at all. Its one of the most baffling Wenger decisions. Has to be 4-4-2 on Wed.

I don't think Toure and Gallas did poorly, it's just that the full backs were absolutely terrible. It's certainly a weakness is Arsenals squad. Sagna out is an absolutely huge blow, however I think you're right, that you'd be better with Sendoros in the middle rather than Hoyte on the right. Maybe Eboue RB instead though?

Bear in mind we're dealing with a man who can get injured very very easily here...

abysmal performance and result on Saturday but if the team can move on, then I'll forgive it as a blip, albeit an embarrassing and frustrating one (for me, it's not about winning the cup or how much of a priority it is, it's about giving a **** and trying your hardest against a similarly-weakened team that you should absolutely want to beat)

Sagna being out for "personal reasons" is hugely frustrating but unavoidable - I think Arsenal have looked a lot more solid this year with himself and CLichy in great form pretty much throughout and there was zero shape to the back four on Saturday (the fact that it was Kolo and Gallas' first game together for a month didn't help either)

Gonna be an incredibly tough match on Wednesday... given the form/injury situations at each club, I'm finding it very hard to know in advance what to hope for (bar a 7-0 thrashing obviously) but hopefully we can set up a decent situation for the second leg (whatever that turns out to mean)
