Planning to relocate to Galway : a few questions...

    Hi everyone !

    I've been looking on Boards.ie for a while, and just registered today.

    I'm French, living in Romania for 2 years, and planning to relocate to Galway next summer.
    I'm planning a trip to Ireland in the next few months, to organize everything.

    I've got some questions about Galway, and more generally, about Ireland :D

    1- I'm afraid about of not understanding the Irish accent. My english isn't really good (I'm French, you know :D), and i'm afraid of not understanding Irish people. I hope i'll get used to it after a few months...

    2 - I'd like to rent a 2 rooms flat (1 bedroom + 1 living room), in a central area (in Galway). How much would it cost ?

    3 - Is life expansive in Galway ? Would 1500 to 2000€/month be enough ?

    4 - Is it ok to ride a bike in the city ? Is the traffic busy ?

    I'll answer as best as I can:

    Well, the more you work with/socialise with Irish people, the quicker you will learn to understand the accent. Try to find a job where there are mostly Irish people and converse often. You'll get it, don't worry.

    Yes. Maybe.

    There is lots and lots of cars but many people go on bikes.

    Thats a higher standard of english then you see on the average post here:D

    Seriously, move over you'll be fine, its a nice place.. Welcome!

    1 bed apartments can be pricey - maybe 650-700 a month and 2 beds from 750 and up

    In Ireland when you see something advertised as a 1 room apartment it implies one bedroom.
    (I know in some countries like Germany a place may be listed as a 2 room which implies its 1 bed & 1 living room. Here if you see a 2 bed apartment it means 2 bedrooms and possible a separate kitchen & living room but sites like daft.ie will list whats in each place). Also they are generally fully furnished over here.

    Even still 2 grand a month is plenty to live on

    How easy is it to earn 2K a month?

    Looks like I'll be moving over in 2 weeks.

    Coming over next weekend to find a 2 bed place to live

    Logistics are going to be a complete nightmare

    Hey!
    I'm french too... And in Galway too...

    Is there only french people??? :D

    Actually, i'm not earning a lot of money (1000 euros a month) and it's ok for having a quiet life. 2 nights a week at the pub, quite good food (but i miss my french cheese!) and just walking or bike for transportation.

    So i think you will not have any problem with 1500-2000 euros!

    And about understanding irish people, it's realy affordable. I just have some difficulties with irish mens, women are more understandable to my mind...
    Maybe i just want more to understand them! Specially when they are pretty ;)

    So finally, I hope you will enjoy Galway as me!

    Have you tried Sheridan's cheese mongers near St. Patrick's national school/St. Nicholas's Church? They may already stock what you want, or be able to source a supplier for you.
