I haven't but just got the bell that the boys were escorted from Hume House at lunchtime. Its a big blow for 104 if its true

even though I never listen to either station, that's a bit of a shocker if true.

Don't listen to ether station, but its a bit of a joke that with all the money in RTE that they have to pouch another program for a bit of success.

DJs have been bringing their shows personalities and formats to other stations since the dawn of time, do you think Ian Dempsey changed his style when he moved to Radio Ireland.

Well if you can't 'create/invent' then poach comes to mind..

First they ripped off Today FMs Gift Grub now they poach a complete show/format staff.
Good to see our license fee isn't being wasted on the RTE creative department.

Sorry but as someone who in the past listened to the Strawberry Alarm clock
I will not be migrating to 2fm. The RTE playlists and listening to how milking
time in Sligo or such like is causing traffic tailbacks in the bog just ain't my cuppa.

to be blunt fm104 are screwed

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,330 ✭✭✭Gran Hermano

To be blunt, 2fm know they are losing market share hand over fist
and this is a half-ar$ed attempt and nothing more than a quick fix.
Nothing but a complete restructure is required.

agree'd. strawberry is the only thing they had going IMO. though having said that, adrian kennedy still rakes in the ratings. if someone bought him up fm104 may as well sell their license

He's probably gone to RTE Lyric:D

Must agree with comment above about 104. A bad start to the year for them. Losing there most listened to show(over 100,000 every morning in Dublin). Dilema with talk show host at the end of last year (charged with Drink Driving Offence and being 3 times over limit)... and Declan Pierce jumping ship also.. Things looking very dark at Hume House in the short term but knowing the people behind the scenes they'll come out fighting to retain the number 1 slot in Dublin.
Andy Matthews takes temporary charge of the breakfast show on 104. I wonder if Joan Lee will return to where she should never have left, breakfast..

On the other hand its a huge gain for 2fm. If they (Colm & Jim) could bring that Dublin market to 2fm's door once again. I don't care if you love them or hate them, They DO have a following and they ARE good at the job. The nation needs an alternative to Gift Grub

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,429 ✭✭✭brettmirl

But will they be able to appeal to the market beyond the M50?

As for Will Leahy. Interesting move. I do fear that he will be RTE's latest rising star though and will suffer from over-exposure.

2FM has been long gone from my car radio pre-sets and this schedule change does nothing to influence me to re-instate it anytime soon.

I am now taking bets on how long it will be before they shuffle the schedule again.

All you armchair PDs are great and all lads but just remember, 104 is an Emap station.

Do you really think 104 are going to just sit back and cry into their radios in the morning??

    I seriously doubt it!!!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,429 ✭✭✭brettmirl

    Nice constructive post Big Balls.

I am a PD as it happens. 104 maybe an EMAP station, but they do have a serious problem here. The strawberries were a big rock in the foundations of 104. What they do to replace it will have major consequences on their future.

    7 – 10pm: Ruth Scott

    WTF?!!

    Another listener lost!

it's just there way of trying to beat the brilliant Ian Dempsey breakfast show.

bout time they took marty off! Im not slagging him off or anything, just why was he on 2fm? does anyone else think its a bit crazy having a youth station, which 2fm is supposed to be, where the average age is about 40?
the strawberry alarm clock is a good show to get, but as for the rest of the day.........................

I was going to say that sounded a bit OTT - looked at the FM104 website and they have Strawberry Alarm Clock up alright but all mention of Colm and Jim are gone!! I guess they paid them in lieu of notice!!! I googled Jim Jim's blog and it's is gone - hit the 'cached' link and the last entry was at 2pm and it's a photo of all their awards sitting on a table with :) above it!!!

Good luck to the guys, I'm assuming they were made an offer they couldn't refuse. I'll be tuning in.

The RTE playlists and listening to how milking time in Sligo or such like is causing traffic tailbacks in the bog just ain't my cuppa.
Now you know how the rest of feel listening how the M50 is clogged again.

RTE is a national station, and needs to serve the entire country equally.

Not sure how the show will transfer to a national audience; I've never heard it, but apparently it's fairly interactive with lots of Dub-style humour..... without the necessary changes and lots of resources from RTE to do the inserts on a nationwide basis it'll end up a damp squib.

If it's resourced and adapted properly it'll be great to see a local radio programme get a chance on national airwaves, but yeah - RTE should be coming up with their own ideas rather than poaching others.

Still, as lots of people have said, 2fm isn't anywhere near my presets and I never listen (way too Dublin-focussed and historically too much arrogant "Ireland's #1 music station" crap from when they were the only one - very easy to be number 1 when your buddies shut down the better alternatives), and that won't change just because they've poached a show I've never heard from somewhere......unless you're a radio enthusiast or a Dub, you won't have even heard of "The Strawberry Alarm Clock", so it's not that much of a coup in public awareness terms to instigate a switch to 2fm by the general public.

In that scenario, it seems like RTE are (yet again) aiming at winning back a Dub audience from the Dublin locals and don't give a crap about the rest of the country. Today FM shows them how it should be done 90% of the time.

Good to see Will Leahy going mainstream weekday, though......another Limerick boy done good.....I hope they don't do a Tubridy on him and overexpose, though......

Its something to build on though. Don't forget Gerry Ryan has been playing some of their material on his show for the past few months. Roll on March 5th.. I can't wait:D

its all well and good to say that adrian pulls in the ratings, but i'm lazy - i couldn't be bothered changing radio stations, so i'll either listen to 104 for adrian or 2fm for strawberries.

i'll prob stick with 104. paudgie was startin to annoy me!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 212 ✭✭Villaricos

do 2fm actually think taking the strawberries will increase their listener ratings on other shows?
If you check out JimJims bebo all the comments are to the effect of "oh Ill have to tune in 2fm on my radio now". They dont honestly think these listeners are going to hang around after nine and listen to Gerry Ryan do they??

    I believe ya.

    Now back to the topic..

Obviously it's a major loss. My point is do you think the leading Dublin station, 4 or 5 points ahead of its nearest rival in the city and with the best market share you can get at present in Dublin is going to say "oh well, that's it, we're f**ked now".

Sorry if I didn't dress it up for you Mr . PD! ;)

I have to say that I never listen to 104FM or 98FM in the mornings - their shows are just way too high-adrenaline go!go!go! for me first thing. I don't know about you guys, but I like a nice calm start! And that's what I loved about The Full Irish, and now Marty (although - I hate that 'can you outsmart marty' quiz). I stopped listening to the morning show when Rick'n'Ruth were on - even tho I do like their shows in general.

2FM are going way too like the Dublin stations than I like (I mean - if I wanted to listen to that type of thing - I'd be listening to those stations!). Night-time radio used be great with off beat shows like Jenny Huston (now relegated to Fri/Sat nights) and now Rick's show is moving to afternoon - does that mean it'll be more mainstream (read: pop) music there too? Where is all the good alternative music going from 2FM that was the best thing about them at night!

Moving back to Phantom....while I'm still in Dublin.....and Today FM, when I'm back in Cork....

I would be the same. 2fm or Today FM early morning. Not a huge fan of Dublin or any Irish city based radio. Prefer national radio. But I am from Tipperary :D
I'm sure it is mostly Dublin people that are pissed about the move. RTE need a decent early morning show to try and hold the Dublin listeners along with all those outside the M50.

Wow - Am seriously in shock!

I checked out the 104 web site & all references to both the boys are gone!

I will be moving with them for sure ......... I cant imagine my morning without them ..........

I wonder how "Gavin" will feel about his new culchie audience??

I hope that teh boys god paid bundles!

No, of course they are not going to just give up because they have lost their breakfast show.

However, FM104 played up the strawberries right across the day. "FM104 - home of Colm & Jim Jim" or something to that effect. They had high profile CD releases around Christmas. They were a big part in 104 over taking their rivals and then stretching the lead over 98FM.

My point is, what the management at 104 do to replace them will have consequences on their future JNLR figures.

It could work out that who or what they replace the breakfast show with could actually work out to be better than the strawberries.
