Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

    Kind of joined it once, in college. Did the online tests and stuff, then got bored and made my own language.

    verbs, nouns, adjectives, the usual shebang. Got to about a 10,000-word vocabulary before I had to go do some more important projects :D

    I was a member years ago. I like the idea of Esperanto as a universal language. It would be great for the EU, but I guess English is now the universal language.

    The thing is I didn't like all the idealistic, socialist and green politics that went along with it.

    It really is very easy to learn and even today I can read it. It's better than my Irish and I was only into it for a year or so, although I kept up with a couple of pen-pals for a bit longer than that.

    Esperanto may not be adopted as a language of speech but I think it may have found some application in translation services (or at least it was investigated for it's possible use in this area). For example translate English into Esperanto and then from Esperanto into Spanish, French or German etc. and vice versa.

    I hadn't heard that, but it seems to make a lot of sense. If the EU used it as an intermediary language for interpretation and translation we could safe on a lot of translators. We wouldn't need to find people who would translate from Latvian to Maltese or whatever.

    Unfortunately for legal / governmental documents your always going to need highly skilled interpretors. English in particular can be extremly obtuse / contrary for getting translations correct [ich bin ein Berliner :D]

    What's wrong with highly skilled English/Esperanto and Esperanto/Another Language interpretors?

    But I do take your point, there could sometimes be unexpected results.

    The idea wasn't so much to have a shared language as to have a language that would be more logical when young children are learning it (e.g. no strange plurals like "children", no irregular verbs, no bizarre spellings) and that in having such a language as their first language the child wouldn't be constantly making mistakes that the author thought was seriously damaging to self-esteem and later motivation to learn things.

    Hi Talliesin,

    Zamenhof invented Esperanto to facilitate communication between all the different nations of the world. AFAIK that was his reason for making it easy and regular.
