It's interesting that Kleyn played for SA but Synman was back with Leinster.

Kleyn could only have been released as a favour to the player by Munster which is fair enough, no harm to keep players happy

Considering Ahern, Beirne , Wycherly and Edogbo were available, it wasn’t a great hardship.

an absolute joke. Munster pays his wages he plays. Simple as that. What horse trading could there be?
That SA convince a THP or hooker to move to Munster next year!?

Lineout went well enough again & we made some nice line breaks.

Coombes, besides the silly yellow, gets us some great yards & carries really well despite some of the chat on a different thread a few weeks back by posters saying he was going to loose his place to Gleeson...tis a long season yet.

Few urc teams would have lived with that scrum tonight.

Thought Crowley's game management at times was poor, we needed to steady things on a few occasions & cross field kicks were not the right call imo...its like he comes back from Ire camp too wound up.

Not too bothered about result as its a continuation of our positive play ( scrum aside) our back play is lovely to watch at times.

    Pity there's a urc break again...frustrating league

JVG was spotted in limerick today.

This time last year we wondering where it was all going to go post the SA trip

Yes Crowley may think he has to prove himself after the Internationals and the usual treatment there. He's a super star for Munster! I just hope himself and Sam meet again after Christmas with a packed thomond behind him

By the usual treatment do you mean they both got to start 2 games each?

Did you see the size of the bench for Stormers? Very few guys under 125kg absolutely monster props and locks.

I actually think the guys coming back from Ireland weren't fully at the pace. The kicking from Casey was a mixed bag. He wasn't getting much distance on his kicks but had some nice cross field kicks. Felt we lost the head a bit trying to make stuff happen. We definitely need to work on our second half performance.

Loughman had a good game, but in the scrums they went after our 37 year old TH and unfortunately the season hasn't panned out for us at TH, Jager out and Salanoa not fit.

Tom Ahern is a real weapon in the lineout and his carrying wat top quality.

Coombes was on the way to having one of those performances, where he displayed everything lacking in the BR for Ireland. I think he's playing angry at the minute and leaking a few needless penalties.

As for the result, I'm happy to get a reality check now rather than later. Lot of learnings to be taken from that second half and good that it happened in the URC rather than Champions Cup. The tough part of the loss is, we could have, and should have won.

Bath will be a big game, but hopefully we can give John Ryan a break and play Jager and Alaalatoa.

You can see why McMillan has decided to sign a 2 and 3 for next season.

Realistically, this season was for bedding in the young lads and culture building, but I think if we have guys fit for the right games, there's no reason we can't have a good crack off Europe this season.

Good post but id say the tighthead situation has panned out exactly as expected so far. Jager always has issues and Roman has played exactly as much as you'd expect. Ryan went over the hill last season. Archer outperformed him.

Its entirely predictable unfortunately and has panned out exactly as predicted by many.

I know it is being addressed but just seems like a waste of one of the few years of clayton we will have

killgallen was excellent, he is a real gem

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,018 ✭✭✭shootermacg

Well apparently we were in the market this season, but couldn't get any quality props over the line. Bartley also being injured isn't great. We're still getting good minutes into 22 year old Ronan Foxe, who looks like he's be a good pro in a couple of seasons.

Oh I dont dispute they are trying. Its more that its of no surprise that its panned out like it has without recruitment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,111 ✭✭✭KrustyUCC

    4 pts dropped

Pity as first half was so good

Not scoring anything in second half won't win many games

Hope that result won't bite us later on in year

Still at start of year we would have taken our season start

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,009 ✭✭✭✭mahoney_j

mixed the good with bad …lots of positives in first half but once stormers changed 5 forwards in one go early in second half we had little answers ….our lack of front row options killed us …

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 5,532 ✭✭✭ionadnapóca

I didnt see the game. Walked by a tv at 21v6(?) and saw Stormers score a try and thought Munster would still easily close it out.

Thats a big lead to surrender. Was it just a case of the forwards or what? (I saw the headlines about the intercept)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,021 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

Not the best game we've had this season but 5 wins and 24 points from 6 games is the best start to a season that we've had in a long time, a lot of the tougher games of the season are behind us IMO.

Stormers are getting all 6 of their derbies out of the way over the next 6 URC games while we have 2 in that time. Considering it's also the Champions Cup season I'd much rather have 2 derbies than 6 over that run of games

Couple of big selection calls this week for Bath. We have kleyn beirne fineen edogbo ahern. Beirne to 6. Who will start and bench? Will we go 6/2?

    Nank or kelly with Farrell?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,356 ✭✭✭Jump_In_Jack

    2nd row: Wycherley, Kleyn,

    6 Beirne,

    Bench: THL Edogbo, LHL/6 Ahern

    Nankivell, Farrell

    23: Kelly

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,356 ✭✭✭Jump_In_Jack

my pick for 15 & bench,

    Starting 15:
    Milne, Scannell, Foxe
    Wycherley, Kleyn
    Beirne, Coombes, Hodnett
    Casey, Crowley,
    Abrahams, Nankivell, Farrell, Kilgallen,
    Daly.

    Bench:
D Barron, Loughman, J Ryan, E Edogbo, Ahern, Coughlan, Hanrahan, Kelly.

We’re short on 7’s, so perhaps Quinn could edge out Ahern. That would be a tough call. I think if Kleyn and E Edogbo are both fit, one starts and the other goes as 19. All our other locks are loose side locks really at the moment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,087 ✭✭✭almostover

Think Aherne has to start at LH lock for me alongside Kleyn at TH lock. Aherne akes our lineout far more reliable and is a proper threat jumping at 2 on opposition throws. We need that now with POM retired. Edogbo to bench for me too, we need the heft because our front row isn't hectic. Scannell is a better scrummaging hooker than Barron so agree there, bring Barron on after 50 when the game will have opened up, he's better around the park.

I watched the Sarries v Bath game at the weekend. Baths have a hefty and good scrum. Getting parity there will be difficult. They have plenty of grunt about them. To be honest they look better than last year.

Oli Jager was apparently at the warm up session on Saturday, so hopefully him and Michael A are available for the weekend.

I think it's hard to let Fineen out of a dog fight - he's also a strong lineout caller. So for me it's Fineen & Kleyn, with Beirne at 6.

Seemingly not, I guess he wasn't registered with Munster in time. Someone will have to drop out to add him (can add 5 players in the pool stages this way).

I presume Bartley will be removed for MA so. We need to go for as physical a pack as possible.

Some scrum stats from TRK, hard to argue it didn't cost us the match. 5 of our 13 penalties against us came from the scrum.

We have the third-most penalised scrum in the league when it comes to scrum offences committed — free kicks and penalties conceded — just behind the Ospreys and Dragons.

League average for offences for scrum is 26%.
    We're at 31%.
    Stormers - 22% (11 of 50).
    Sharks - 14% (8 of 58).
    Leinster: 28% (17 of 60).

    • We tend to win our own ball (89% of the time) but it's defensive scrums where we're in trouble. Most of our woes the other night were on the tighthead side. That meant they were able to get up the field quite easily (they had 21 lineouts, we had 12) and force us to reset and build again from deep, which, to be fair, our backs did well at times. We actually attacked well I thought, the Stormers don't cough up tries easily and their 22 defence is excellent and we repeatedly caused them trouble.
    • My own thoughts are it's probably no shock given Jager is out (our scrum functions better when he's there, stats during his game-time tell this tale) and we've a 37 year old tight head and a very raw 22 year old sub the last few games. I think Kleyn was a big loss too in terms of oomph behind the front row. Archer was notably better when he had Kleyn behind him. I actually would have preferred to keep him on for the extra season rather than Ryan.
    • Keeping Jager and MA fit for crucial games at the business end against strong scrums is absolutely vital. Crowley is the other vital cog. I think PFPatterson or Coughlan could cover for Casey adequately enough but there's too much of a gap at 10 with the others comparatively if we're talking semi-finals and finals imo.

Some of our kicking could have been better, some of Casey's boxkicks didn't get much distance and there was no wind there so no excuse… a couple of Crowley's crossfield kicks were a fraction off. Nanks had an unusually poor game, he's normally so consistent for us. Coombes made a stupid decision with the trip, Crowley's intercept is a try for us on another day. That disallowed try at the end works for us on another day and we're 5-1 winners. Some very fine margins that went against us, them's the breaks.

I'm still very optimistic about the season and if you're going to be brought back down to earth this wasn't a bad game for it... but there's lots to be positive about. We lead for 67 minutes and had 56% possession. They have the best red zone defence in the league and we tore through it - they give up 1 try every 8.5 entries, we scored 3 tries out of 7 entries. Our attack is humming, our lineout can be a weapon offensively/defensively (Ahern is become more and more influential here), we still have some players to come back from injury (Gleeson, Haley, Nash, Kendellen), hope Michael A will help shore up the scrum and Jager is back to fitness. Having a bench of players like Edogbo/Hodnett/Kelly is an improvement on where we were in recent seasons where there wasn't much impact beyond the first 15.

We look like a well-coached and well-drilled side, will be interesting to see how these next run of games go, we'll know a lot more about us by mid-January. Bath look to have a strong scrum, I really hope one or both of Jager and MA are available for selection.

I think he was registered for the champions cup but can't find him listed. You'd imagine that we've know he was coming for a while and he would have been added to the list

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,021 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

If the list is accessible to the public I'd say they couldn't add him to it until his transfer was announced. They likely have a backup plan to get him involved in the upcoming Champions Cup games

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,665 ✭✭✭Brief_Lives

    According to the Indo;

"Munster are hopeful Jack Crowley will be available to square off against Finn Russell in their Champions Cup opener against Bath on Saturday night, despite the Ireland out-half sitting out training yesterday.

Crowley is nursing a leg injury after the bruising defeat against the Stormers. He picked up the injury during the first half, but finished the game as the South Africans came from 21-6 down to win 27-21.

Jack O’Donoghue is out as he undergoes the return-to-play protocols following a head injury he suffered last weekend, while new signing Michael Ala’alatoa is in line for his debut against the English champions.

“We're just assessing him, that's ongoing,” Munster defence coach Denis Leamy said of Crowley.

“He got a little bit of a bang early in the game, right at the start, so we're just being assessed at the moment so we'll see how that one plays out."

I'd prefer to see Butler take the 10 jersey and let Crowley recover properly… Don't think I'm alone in that opinion
