LD is actually fine once she doesn't dwell on forced banter/have long talking spells just sticks to the music - she was good on Today fm at start when it was predominantly music and then they got her talking more and forced "bantz" with the news team/producers it was so grating

Feel your pain mr N… for me she is a paid up member of the 'Everyones is great' club and is way too 'gushing' for the time of day.

Cannot understand her popularity I must admit. I hope she does well but she will not get any airing in casa Bendar.

Disappointing that nothing was mentioned about Arena and whether Rick O'Shea will be continuing in that role.

I’m amazed that there has been so much hype when it’s basically just a reordering of the roster.

Disappointing that RTE are continuing with their preoccupation with news and current affairs for Radio 1. It’s of no value to the nation to have Morning Ireland, the Today programme, News at One and Drivetime all cover the same stories in nearly identical ways. On BBC Radio 4 there are large stretches of the day with lifestyle, drama, comedy and the like.

The Today programme ought to be someone personable like Cuddihy, who is just as comfortable with the light stuff as the news. Kenny was good but not great at that, Byrne was worse, and now we get some who’s dry as the Sahara. It should not be a former newscaster in that slot!

At least we won’t have to look at the eyebrows going up and down!

They have 2fm, lyric and rnag as well as gold. Radio 1 should be current affairs/talk. But they should use their other stations too.

When Woman's Hour was moved from its afternoon slot to 10 am on Radio 4, there was terrible outrage in England. They settled down eventually. Do not assume that what you want in any particular slot, is what the general public want. Or that your opinion of the quality of radio presenters, represents the wider view.

Among the stupidest things I have read in a while. Imagine if every post here got the response, ‘Don’t assume everyone shares your opinion.’

There's an interview in today's Irish Indo with Patricia Monahan. She talks about several things, including Ray D'Arcy's exit. It looks like his show was always going to be for the chopping block. "…we were looking at JNLRs. We were looking at the show’s performance. Also, we were looking at audience research and the message we were getting clearly was that, at that point of the afternoon, music was the thing they ended up going to most. It was a case of ‘give me a breather’ [from talk radio] at that time of day.”

I think, rather than a surprise, the Irish Times said that D'Arcy knew 3 months ago.

What a surprise that a contractor was surprised his contract was not being renewed!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,164 ✭✭✭✭expectationlost

Articles have referred to all presenters being told that he should be prepared for a non-renewal of contracts but when he was told on Sept 29th, that was his 3 months notification of non-renewal of his contract.

Ray D’Arcy says he was ‘blindsided’ by ‘brutal’ RTÉ treatment – The Irish Times

Derek Mooney also thought that he got brutal treatment when he was axed to let Ray come back in. Ray did arrest the slide in listener numbers which Mooney presided over. The Sunday times went big on the top man in Bauer today, predicting that more big names would leave RTE. Page 1 and 3 of the main paper, and a full page profile of him in the Business section.

New schedule starts next Monday (10th) according to the Saorview EPG with "Sport on RTÉ Radio 1" on at 6pm with Marie Crowe and Jacqui Hurley

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 623 ✭✭✭iffandonlyif

It is utter madness that they have two women presenting a programme about sport, whose fans are about 90% men.

It’s a continuation of the trend in the UK where women commentators (usually awful) are being forced on the male viewer. Following the departure of Gary Lineker, Match of the Day now has three presenters, two of whom are women.

2 longstanding sports presenters getting to present a sports show is not a big deal. You might want a bit of self reflection there lad...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,356 ✭✭✭SPDUB

I'm putting this out here because of the above comment

I don't give a toss if the programme is presented by men, women or small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri .

I don't like sports and will be part of the captive audience for this slot so I honestly hope this programme crashes and burns

Unfortunately that is not really an option , easiest option is to cut power to the area radio is in .

So Inside sport presenters will be 3 days and 2 days per week. Really seems rushed schedule change.

It would have been much better to move Arena to 6 from a PSB point of view.

Arena should be 3-4pm. The music programme should be 12-1. They should have a 3 hour mid morning programme from 9-12. Problem solved

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,050 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

Arena should absolutely be on at 3pm after Liveline, like its forerunner show when Mike Murphy presented The Arts Show up until early 2000's.

Certainly at least do this to honour the late Sean Rocks.

Can you imagine BBC Radio 4 shafting an Arts show to 7pm to make way for an hour of music at 3pm ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,148 ✭✭✭RoTelly

    @GSF and @ford fiesta

I agree but in the context of the new schedule, also the Arts show was only 15mins afair.

IMO, all RTÉ Radio stations should have a small arts programme in prime time, finish with "Coming up on Arena on Radio 1 at 6" ("Ag Teacht ar Arena anocht ar Radio a hAon").

it’s more the lack of variety in the Radio 1 schedule that is the problem. Even newstalk has a science and technology programme which Rte appears to be lacking

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,475 ✭✭✭✭BPKS

Turned over around 12.15 to listen to a.bit of music. Took me a few minutes of a boring interview to cop what was happening.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,177 ✭✭✭Storm 10

Sorry but two hours of Oliver Callanan is to much I think the morning schedule is going to be a disaster, I was used to Claire up to midday .
