Hell of a race, so many questions but the main thing is there is so much that can change

    The gap has gone from 104, 94, 69, 63, 40, 36 for Max.

Reposting from the Mexico thread. We have a spicy end to the season.

It's hard to believe, but all 3 contenders really stepped up their games today. Oscar with a great recovery to 5th which could have been 4th, Max with a great 1 stop management to finish 3rd which could have been 2nd and Lando getting the pole, getting the start and driving off into the distance.

    This too shall pass.

I’m still stunned that the championship has 3 left in it. Next 4 races have me giddy, and the last race is on my 40th, a Max 5th title would be an amazing gift.

Championship is wide open, a rainy race in Brazil or a crash between two competitors could turn it on its head.

Norris in the best position and seems to be very focused but the pressure will be ramped up now.

Not sure if the current state of play but it's usually around this time in the season that drivers take grid penalties for swapping out engines, that could play a big part of any of the top 3 need to do that

Is this season the best collective group of rookies in a long time? Excluding the alpine drivers who can't really perform they've all done well. Liam Lawson was unlucky in thr red bull but has settled again in the VCARB. Bortoleto has been excellent in a Sauber, and has outperformed Hulk in a number of races. Hadjar has been excellent and will justifiably be in the red bull next year. Antonelli has been impressive at times but underperforming the car - but he's super young. Ollie Bearman then has been improving and improving every race, he looks like a proper gem.

Has anyone else noticed that since Adrian Newey moved to Aston Martin they have been getting worse and Red Bull have been improving?

he apparently had nothing to do with the AM 24/25 car - its 26 you need to judge him on

For those who can't use that non-link above, the name change is to Williams F1 Team from Williams Racing.

    Whoopdy dooo!. Yawn.

Ya, if he had wasted any time on the current car it would have been a terrible decision. It's full steam ahead on new car, new regs, new engine. 2026 will tell us an awful lot about the future of the Aston Martin project.

It May be one project too far for Newey as I'd imagine nothing but immediate front running will satisfy Stroll.

I hope he can pull it off again and beat everyone out of the blocks on the regulation change.

If 2026 is a tentpole year on AMs roadmap, does Alonso have a seat? Lance is gauranteed his seat but even in a competitive car I don't ever see him as a title contender. Do AM need a genuine top driver (in their prime or coming into their prime) to match the car they hope to deliver. Or will they have a singular focus on making Lance champion, to hell with the second seat?

Without a track record of success, would they be able to attract a top driver? Sainz might be the best driver for whom an AM seat would be a step up. I'd love to see him get an AM drive and be competitive. He seems wasted at Williams

If they perform well with obvious improvements available, the combination of Newey, Honda and Daddy Stroll's wallet would be very tempting…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,907 ✭✭✭Bacchus

As dulpit said, the "combination of Newey, Honda and Daddy Stroll's wallet" could be enough to tempt a top driver. Who knows which team are going to perform well next year. It could be a big shakeup with Williams and AM stepping up. Landa and Oscar could be ones to watch depending on who wins the championship (if either). Neither will want to be the 'second seat' next year so could they gamble on a new team?

Colapinto is keeping his seat for 2026 or at least for the start of the 2026 season anyway

I was hoping Piastri would win, or even Max, but Norris has been excellent and if he does go on to win it, it'll be well deserved.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,946 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

If any of the 3 drivers left in contention win they'll be a deserving champ.

Russell now mathematically out of the running..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,560 ✭✭✭recyclebin

It's very strange the way this season has gone for Norris and Piastri. Piastri was the cool, calm ice man and Norris was the emotional one. Piastri looked like he was the faster driver but I think the team orders has got to his head and he has really lost his focus. I know this is a bit of a generalisation but it's the third Aussie to end up in a similar situation. Webber and Ricciardo didn't seem to have that mental resolve to ignore team orders and look after no. 1. Once they felt unloved and under appreciated they're driving really suffered.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 5,649 ✭✭✭Slutmonkey57b

I think neither driver has the mental strength of the greats. Verstappen is a twat, and he's been allowed to get away with dodgy behaviour, but that's the fault of the team bosses and the stewards for letting him get away with it, he definitely isn't the weak link in the team winning races.

F1 fanatic did a good graph of what a "number 1/perfect" McLaren driver would have done over the year, and the championship would have been over a long time ago. Both drivers have thrown points away, and both drivers have been negatively affected mentally at different points in the season. Nobody is immune to that unless you're one of the true greats (Schumacher, Lauda, Prost, Clark etc).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,907 ✭✭✭Bacchus

Ultimately, I'd like to see Lando win it but for the sake of an exciting run-in, would have been nice to see Max take P1. I read that only for that puncture he would have been in the mix for it. As it stands, on form, I'm not sure Oscar can recover, and Max has lost ground on Lando two weeks in a row. It really feels like Lando's to lose from here. That said, the McLarens had no luck in Las Vegas last year so there could be another twist yet.

And I believe both McLaren cars are also at their full allocation of engines - so if they need to take a new one they'll be starting from the pitlane too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,802 ✭✭✭bennyx_o

Not necessarily pitlane - it's a 10 place penalty for an engine change. Max's engine (and set up) was changed in parc ferme so it was a mandatory pit lane start

Brasil has that huge straight so an engine change would probably mitigate some of the grid places or pit lane start. The remaining tracks wouldn't reward a fresh engine as much
