Leinster, Munster and Connaught was a book by Frank O'Connor in the 1950s.

When I was in school in the 70's we were taught that the correct spelling was Connaught but that Connacht was acceptable.

I think TOB can do most of it. But I haven't seen much of him at second receiver. Hansen was good at that role last night.

Farrell famously likes hid wingers to be 'messy'. Coming in off the wing and taking the ball infield at odd angles. That's not TOB's strong point. His strong point is running fast and footballing on the wing.

So we'll see if Farrell asks TOB to come infield or the team aims to make space tor TOB on the wing

It is not the correct spelling for the team, which is what was being referred to in the initial post

The man with the 2nd best winning record in test rugby this cycle is apparently not cut out for the job anymore and suddenly will lose 3 games from 4.

You can thank the standard of rugby journalism in 2025 for comments like this, rugby knowledge of fans is at an all time low.

The team is called after the province. Both spellings have been used since it's formation in 1885.

I used the spelling Connaught for the rugby team up until about ten years ago. I've been following the team since the mid-seventies. I didn't pick that spelling out of thin air.

Connacht as the spelling has taken over now, not just in rugby but everywhere.

rugby journalism Is fully behind Farrell bar a few heads.
I would argue how Irish rugby is set up is why Ireland are so successful. Take away the unions control of the provinces and it would not be such an easy gig.

Farrell was performing well up to late 2024 and then for the last year he has completely lost the run of himself.
it was not the dropping of Crowley as I believe Ireland should be building depth, it was his treatment of Crowley which I found bizarre.
add in the adding of sexton to both Ireland and the lions which is unearned and disruptive.

He nearly threw away the lions tour and bar a disgraceful ref decision he would have lost the series. Selecting his son Owen was just wrong. And his behaviour when some media questioned him this shows a man who is deep down a bully

Let’s see how the autumn and spring goes but I think it’s going to be a tough period for Farrell and Ireland and let’s see how he reacts then when it’s not going well.

I disagree with everything in your original post, but picking up on calling him a bully. It is very well known that he is very very far from that and has brought families into camp, allowed players to stay with their partners the night before a game in certain circumstances, is massive on culture. Something his predecessors certainly didn’t do.

Owen Farrell is a winner, will go down as one of England’s best ever 10s, is a previous Lions tour winner etc etc etc. I wanted him in the original squad ahead of Marcus Smith due to what he would bring to the Lions camp.

You’re wrong (in my opinion) in just about everything you’ve said but to call him a bully is way off.

The Owen Farrell derangement syndrome in some quarters really is something else. He's one of the best players of the professional era, from any nation, full stop.

The Team uses Connacht in all their merchandise, their branding and that is how they referred to in the various competitions that they participate in since they went professional.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 398 ✭✭Bart97

You mean during the period he WASNT with Ireland as he was the Lions coach?

He didn’t throw anything away, he won the series. There’s no “bar this” or “bar that” he won the series. What cost the Lions a 3-0 series was Farrell picking too many England/Scottish players, just to appease the British media despite these players not having the skills/ability to play the way the Irish play.

It will be tough for Ireland, but even tougher for Irelands opponents.

disagree entirely , he is a phenomenal coach and human being , he doesn’t get everything right , neither do any of us

I was wrong to say bully. That is the wrong word.
his treatment of Crowley and certain media who questioned this treatment and his selecting of Owen I would call manipulative rather then bullying.

But I stand by my other points.

Farrell by putting Crowley up for media when Crowley knew he was not playing was disgraceful behaviour by Farrell. It was unnecessary and it was a case of using Crowley as a shield to deflect any pressure away from Farrell.

I’ve been as critical of him in some aspects as anyone on here, but this “bully” stuff is an awful load of rubbish.

TOB now out with an injury too. Hopefully not serious because I've no idea who covers that wing if he's out for a while as well.

Now with all due respect, you're probably the one who should be embarrassed with this "effort".

Firstly, there's nothing wrong with criticising the D4 mejia for giving AF a free pass on overplaying his top players at the RWC , especially since Rassie Erasmus did their analysis work for them showing how SA players were kept fresh versus Irish players in particular, being over played & flogged by the QF stage.... I kid you not, Google it FYI.

Secondly, Ireland with Crowley at 10 won a super 6 Ns playing both France & RWC runners up England away from home. That's a far harder 6Ns to win than when facing the big 2 in Dublin. Even 12 yr old school kids realise that!!

So with all due respect to you, you're not comparing apples v apples. But sure you knew that surely!?

P.s. finally it was a fit & fresh Sexton who was on the pitch with Ireland, who helped win that GS in 2023. The 38 yo spent outhalf was a shadow of his former self in the last quarter v NZ in the QF imho. That's why a fresh Crowley would have been a much better option in the last quarter of the RWC QF match v NZ, when Sexton was clearly gassed.... and when Ireland needed an injection of pace & ideas to try to seal the game. They didn't use Crowley, & a tired Ireland with a jaded 10 came up short.

    https://www.the42.ie/rassie-springboks-ireland-6199607-Oct2023/

Google will even tell you this:

According to Rassie Erasmus, the average player for the South African Springboks was on the field for 162 minutes during the Rugby World Cup 2023, due to a strategy of rotating players, particularly during the pool stages. This was in contrast to teams like Ireland, which played most of their matches with their full-strength team.

South Africa's average: 162 minutes per player, achieved through a rotation strategy that aimed to manage player workload and prevent injury.

Contrast with other teams: This was significantly lower than other teams, such as Ireland, which used a more consistent lineup and had a higher average player minutes....

As I said, most people spell it Connacht these days so that's the name they use. I'm sure if Connaught became the common spelling again they'd change too just like they changed from Connaught to Connacht years ago.

Again, you're talking about the area, the reference was to the rugby team where the poster used the incorrect spelling

Is it a Farrell call considering Hansen didn't look great after scoring the try last night?

All the four teams are provinces. All four use the spelling of the province. The difference in Connacht is that there are two spellings. Both spellings are correct so regardless of the fact that Connacht spell it that way both spellings of the province are correct.

Anybody spelling it Connaught rugby is correct.

Your claim that because all Connacht rugby gear is printed using Connacht does not mean that Connaught is wrong.

As I said the team is named after the province not the other way around.

Yeah, he looked delighted there at the end. Sore bodies tomorrow but that win will be great for him

Autumn is going to be a disaster isn’t it. Loyalty over performance. WC is looking like another shitshow in two years unless poor performance is not continuously rewarded with caps
