Yeah Hansen was looking sharp so would have been a nice option at 15. Osborne nailed on now, TOB probably the big winner if Hansen is out.

Jimmy O’Brien applying for his ESTA as we speak

O certainly would be calling for a guy with 120mintues of urc rugby to be included if he moved south....get over yourself.

Milne averaged 39mins in blue over the past 2 seasons, he has averaged 68mins since moving south and yet to play into double figures.

Fair enough if leinster deemed him surplus to requirement but please don't put paddy mc up on a pedestal based on what he played to date

The truth of the matter is the third choice loosehead is going to be a weak position no matter who is picked. McCarthy coming up behind him almost certainly was a contributory factor to Milne leaving, but neither are who you'd really want to be relying on.

McCarthy has about 250 mins of URC rugby to date, or am I misunderstanding your point?

Not to speak for 50HX, but I think his point is that this…

Interestingly I don't remember many calls outside leinster for Milne to be included before now… although I'm sure it would be the same for Mccarthy if it was him that had moved south.

    … is a bullsh*t argument.

    120mins this season.

I was replying back to some nonsense that if milne & p mc were switched the call would be that the player down south should have been picked.

Sure. There were no calls for him cause Healy and Boyle were there and he was pretty obviously next man up as we saw in the summer tests.

He has failed to make much impression for a reason though.

Call it BS if you like but it's true. Theyve both played in 3 games this season.

Are you telling me if Milne was starting for leinster the past 3 games you'd still be calling for him to be in the squad?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,342 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

    Which is fine.

But the OP is clearly saying there are only calls for him to be included now cos he “moved south”.

Which is clearly a bullshit provincialist argument.

Lee Barron “moved south” at the exact same time and I haven’t seen a single call for him to included.

Think TOB would've been in strong contention to start anyway. He's the best winger in the country.

I posted earlier in the day on this & the centre choices as well.

I find it hard to square the fact he may (injury) bench v NZ yet didn't get time in the summer tour,...i got responses which you can go back & read

Yes is the answer to your question.

Bring in him in as a training panelist if they want to look st him

TOB is the form winger definitely, but I'm pretty sure Hansen would have started in Chicago. Farrell rates him incredibly highly and I think he also would have started the first Lions test, but for injury.

Hansen is a great mix of counter attacker and playmaker. You can give him the ball in space and he'll break the line with a shimmy or chip over the top. But he's equally comfortably at slotting in as second receiver to then put his teammates into space with a pass. He's integral to Ireland's attack and we're a worse side without him.

Lee Barron has Sheehan, Kelleher, Mccarthy, Herring, Stewart and Heffernan ahead of him so no I don't think it would be like for like to call for Barrons inclusion.

There's more than a slight element of the pot calling the kettle black on the provincialist argument also.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,342 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

Exactly. It's not at all a like-for-like comparison, because there are way more grounds for Milne to be included, completely independent of what province he plays for.

You're making my point for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 547 ✭✭✭exiledawaynothere

Milne has been a fantastic addition to Munster and if he keeps playing as he has been then he will get a chance. More broadly, players who take the jump in spreading talent across the country should have some ‘credit in the Bank’ especially if they are starting week in and week out against quality opposition and are battle hardened through matches and not training sessions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 322 ✭✭VayNiice

Not at all. You can not call for Barron to be included and still be motivated provincially for wanting Milne to be selected.

Do you really think Milne is a better prospect for Ireland than Mccarthy? If we're planning for the future do you believe Milne has a higher ceiling? Milne is a good prop, particularly as a ball carrier but hes not a strong scrumager against decent opposition.

Aki only played 60 minutes tonight and looked poor - granted he's just back from the summer but I would be very concerned with how he will progress over the season from an Ireland perspective.

I think the autumn internationals are going to be tough going for Ireland.
have a feeling we could lose to the big 3 and South Africa could beat us well.

I just think Andy Farrell is in the job too long and is not the man for the job anymore.

His treatment of Crowley, picking his own son for the lions and his adding sexton to the management ticket are all signs of a man who has lost perspective.

If Farrell wants to rescue his reputation and Ireland’s direction He must draw a clear line between personal relationships and professional judgment and He should bring in independent thinkers to the management ticket and not just familiar faces.

For me Farrell by picking his own son for the lions, that’s a decision of a man who’s so convinced of his integrity that he can’t see the conflict of interest right in front of him. He crossed a line and it’s a decision that shows he is unfit to make impartial selections at the highest level.

And you can indeed call for Milne to be included and not be motivated provincially.

You can even not bring any provincialism into it whatsoever, but that rather depends on the individual, I suppose.

    More's the pity.

Do you really think Milne is a better prospect for Ireland than Mccarthy? If we're planning for the future do you believe Milne has a higher ceiling? Milne is a good prop, particularly as a ball carrier but hes not a strong scrumager against decent opposition.

I'll answer this in good faith since it's actually getting to the interesting part of the discussion.

Better prospect? Probably McCarthy from the little I've seen of him and the huge amount of praise he's getting from the odd pundit who's opinion I would respect. But who's the better player currently? That seems a lot closer and open to debate.

Generally, I'm happier for the 3rd choice player to be the younger prospect - and I've no problem with McCarthy being in the squad on these ground - but in this case with Healy having retired and Boyle not having gotten a lof of opportunities up to now, I think there's a case that Milne could've been favoured over McCarthy.

Bearing in mind, Boyle is someone I've previously argued should've seen more gametime last season (#provincialm).

But my main point overall here is that this is all a discussion that could've been had without any need for "moved south" rubbish at the start of all of this.

    Rescue his reputation 🤣

You are off the deep end with that one. The man is just back from a winning Lions Tour and has won the last 2 6N championships he coached in.

Andy is infinitely better at figuring this out than anyone on boards

You're probably right, but I'd argue TOB can do all that, and he's faster, but I'm biased.

He's not Connacht's best 9 by any stretch. Most fans believe it's Devine and I'm one of them. We all want to see him get his opportunity to claim the job. Murphy had a bad game against Cardiff but he's been better than Blade over the last 12 months.

I like to back our Connacht players and Blade is a Galway man but unfortunately I can't stand up for him.
