YouTube are getting aggressive with these emails. They cancelled it on me last Wednesday, I resubscribed and they cancelled it again. I even watched videos with the polish vpn on.

Just charge a fair price for Ireland ffs.

Going to switch from single to family with the Turkish iTunes method soon. Are there any issues doing this I should be aware of?

Set up the family members first before subscribing.

FWIW I did it earlier with no hassle

I had signed up through Turkish iTunes a while back but couldn’t add family as my wife was the family leader in our Google group

She deleted that last night. I set up the new family and then switched today from individual to family. €44 will get me about 8 months

Are they refunding you though after cancelling?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,789 ✭✭✭antimatterx

No because I don't lose access to premium until the current monthly period ends. They make me resub though before the next payment goes out.

Do you think they are, or will collect data on the country you are predominantly accessing from. And start cutting access if they don't like it. Based on the update to terms and conditions.

In this case you'd need VPN on all the time. It's nearly getting as bad as flying a war plane with counter measures, all to watch youtube for free. Something unthinkable 15/20 years ago.

If anyone is setting up a plan let me know, or if people are interested let me know and I'll start up a family plan

Just signed up to the Turkish ITunes and it worked a treat. Thank you to everyone that shared the information on how to do this. It’s very much appreciate

This is the one widely used. Been going strong on it for about a year now. They sent an email a few days ago which is a little concerning as they said they will be stricter on needing you to be mainly connecting from the country that you are signed up in so I’m not sure how that will leave us on Turkish credit. My advise would be not to top up too much in case it does get clamped down on.

For some reason I had it in my head it was 35 a month. I'm sick of ads now and even the kids are complaining so I've renewed my family plan.

I've 2 spots available if anyone wants to chip in.

Some reports this morning that Google are clamping down on Family members not living in the same house.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,457 ✭✭✭micks_address

ive been using poland last few months but it seems like with them changing terms and conditions ill be done soon.. ive been able to renew each month using a vpn and revolut.. will keep going as long as it lasts. i was able to renew for another month with a vpn set to poland..

Ya just read an article there, seems. That they are starting to slowly roll this out to catch people who aren't in same household. Which would suck.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,978 ✭✭✭✭shmeee

On this, how will they actually know who's in what household. People watching on mobile, all different ISP's. Will they use location data on your Google account?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,939 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

No idea. I know that if I use the netflix account I'm on on mobile it will work anywhere, but if I am in a different house it recognises I'm in a different house…

I think you are expected to connect to home Wifi network at least once a month.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,793 ✭✭✭wassie

    According to this article:

For context, YouTube conducts an "electronic check-in" every 30 days to ensure that each family member lives at the same residential address as the family manager. Previously, failing the check-in didn't really seem to have any consequences, but that is now changing.

I reckon if you stuck to using mobile data you'd be ok. different WiFi addresses are a red flag

If anyone has a Nord VPN account, they actually have an option called MeshNet that helps bypass this issue so that all client devices look like they are located at the same address, but it is a little bit techy to implement.

Unfortunately they are discontinuing it at the end of this year.

You'd think Google, of all organisations would realise not all families live at the same addresses. This doesn't stop them being families though.

Netflix went this route too, they became fairly Draconian , preventing streaming within fully plan's, if it detected you weren't all in the same address, and you can see the backlash starting to happen to them with people just saying they're letting the account lapse and not renew payments.

Strange business model to pursue, but I'm sure they know what they're doing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 909 ✭✭✭byrnefm

How does that impact those who have subscribed via the iTunes method, I wonder? Or does it go by where the main person is logging into YouTube from?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,880 ✭✭✭Nigzcurran

You dont give a postal address when signing up so I presume it's based on family creators device location

That would actually end up being fairly crazy. I think, if they pursued this, I'd end up just leaving it.
