The fact they club are evidently briefing against him would kind of indicate they are saying to him your options are Turkey, Saudi or rot as 3rd choice in a WC year.

A hollow victory for whoever wins it this year so 😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,772 ✭✭✭crusd

He is on 5k week. If he was to end up doing well and starting 20 games in the championship the resale value boost alone would more than pay for it.

I don't get why we loaned him to them though.

Surely they are going to have a terrible season?

They are a mess of a club and doesn't seem like a great situation to have put the kid in.

Did the club try and sign him on a free last summer or at least discussed it?

So, looking forward to Summer 2026, it'll likely be as busy as this with the rebuild. Getting my crystal ball out and assuming no major business in Jan.

    GK's

Likely one of Onana/Bayindir leaving before the foreign windows shut, the other is bound to be chucked out next year. Heaton likely to retire. Question is will we be looking for a new back up keeper or yet another No.1.

    Defence.

Can see the club trying to shift Shaw, high earner and usually injured.

    Maguire may get another year.

Martinez, a lot will depend on if he gets back to full fitness, could see him being moved on if Heaven keeps knock knock, knocking on the door, but is more likely to stay.

Very likely to see one if not two wing backs coming in, and possibly a squad level CB.

    Midfield

This has to be priority next year.

I believe Bruno will go, that he agreed to stay for just one more year. Casemiro to move on a free as well. That leaves just Ugarte and Mainoo, so 2 first team level players needed, regardless of how well Mainoo might do this season, and possibly a third.

Baleba likely to be the big chase, Wharton another likely to be in the mix to keep the homegrown quota up.

If all the false 9's provide sufficient cover up front this season, they may well continue with just Sesko, with Obi getting minutes. If Mount is out with injuries again, they may well look to offload and replace with a different type of forward.

    On a tangent.

Johnny Evans was busy this summer in his new role, quite a lot of youngsters going out on loan e.g. Amass. Will be interesting to see how they get on, most likely to be sold on eventually with the club looking at this as a revenue stream like Chelsea, but hopefully a few will come back into the squad and push for a place.

I think the other club typically has to be initiating / pushing / appealing a decision in most cases. Not that I would want them to do it but it we appealed the decision of the EFL, I would be fairly sure it would end up that Grimsby were thrown out.

In this case, Grimbsy went to the EFL and highlighted the fact that the deal was a minute late. Where it finally ends up would be on what we decide to do from here imo.

I think next summer could be interesting in another way. I reckon we'll be fighting off interest for Yoro. Really looks like he'll be world class. Hopefully the team progresses enough this year to keep him interested in staying.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,182 ✭✭✭NITRO95

If Yoro continues with his progression this season then I'd not be surprised if he's the guy that replaces Bruno as Captain next summer. Hes seemingly very popular and not afraid to speak up. If Bruno is going then offer Lenny the armband and if he doesn't want to stay even with that then fair enough cash in and get 80-100m from Barca or Real.

With the midfield side of things - you would have to assess what level Collyer is at after a season in the Championship. Maybe good enough to be a squad player? Will Sekou Kone get some senior minutes this year or what’s the plan for him? I don’t know anything about any of the other academy players.

Bruno probably goes alright. Turned down €40m + €10m (net pay) in bonuses a year to stay with us. Money isn’t everything and he is getting well paid at United but that can’t have been an easy no. You’d expect him to have some of that next year when turning 32. Mainoo as his replacement hopefully. Getting Baleba ahead of others will be a challenge + you would have to see if he can continue to play well this season.

Just on Shaw - I think he’s a very hard sell and if they can do it, it would likely involve subsidising some of his wages (not a bad thing if the financials on it are right). Let’s see how he gets on this season though.

Surely if onana wants money then a move to Saudi would be on the cards but maybe they have no interest in him

    Fun fact...

Our ladies team keeper is Phallon Tullis-Joyce. She wears an unusual squad number, 91. Apparently she used to wear 19 (her birth date) but flipped it to 91 after joining a club where 19 wasn't available. She's been 91 her whole pro career.

Senne Lemmens for most of his professional career has worn...

    1000132017.jpg

Tis a sign I tell ye!

Nothing screams first choice like the number 91 🤣

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,351 ✭✭✭IncognitoMan

Will that be Utd's highest ever squad number registered or did some youth striker pick 99 along the way?

    I can't remember any

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,233 ✭✭✭✭DrPhilG

According to Google, Shoretire's 74 is the highest we've ever had.

No number confirmed yet for Lammens but I'd be surprised if it isn't 91 given his history.

You field an ineligble player then your win is null and void. How are they not kicked out of the competition.

60 seconds late and reported it themselves. There was precedent and the punishment is aligned with the other incident according to the press release. Seems like a fairly minor "oops" to me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,409 ✭✭✭scottser

I wouldn't take anything away from Grimsby. In fact, I hope they go on and win it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,426 ✭✭✭Yeah Right

Offloading players on massive wages who haven't worked out IS a success though? If they're surplus to requirements, get rid. I'm as impressed that we managed to get rid of Rashers, Sancho, Antony and, to a lesser extent, Razzmatazz as I am with the new signings. Anyone who looks at that recent transfer window and doesn't see it as a huge success is living in dreamland.

Look at Arsenal, ffs. Quarter of a billion spent this summer, more than a billion overall since Arteta joined and they started that match at the weekend with what, 4 CBs and 3 DMs in the lineup? Not saying we're any better, but at least we're trying (and possibly failing) to not be completely toxic. Schmeichel is right. I wouldn't be too happy if I was an Arsenal fan at the moment.

YEah, Welbeck was looked at as a free transfer signing for last summer according to reports.

Thinkhe would have been a good pick up this season too, to be fair. But then your management of Chido becomes an issue (if that is a concern)

i think we should appeal against grimsby. to me, fielding an ineligible player should result in disqualification regardless. we shouldn't even need to appeal, they should just be turfed out and us re-instated.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 8,383 ✭✭✭El Gato De Negocios

It would be one thing if it was an automatic DQ / reinstatement and we had no choice in the matter but I'll be utterly sickened if the club lodges a complaint / appeal or whatever. Grimsby absolutely deserved their win.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,059 ✭✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Club won't appeal. It has five working days but they won't. Four other recent cases were mentioned benefiting big clubs and small clubs with them only being fined but no one ever appealed those decisions. Doubt many even care enough about the EFL cup to complain about it.

How we have fallen looking to kick out a league 2 side who totally deserved their win over us.

The utter embarrassment if we did......

    EVENFLOW

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,013 ✭✭✭AidoEirE

Onana looking for a new contract because of the 25% cut for not being in the champions league.

Fkin reason we are not in the champions league is because he's a clown in between two posts. Utter shite.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,351 ✭✭✭IncognitoMan

This is not a battle for the club to take on.

60 seconds here or there - we were beaten on the night.
It's not like we were playing a team where fine margins should have come into it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,697 ✭✭✭✭FourFourRED

He missed a penalty for them too. He gave us a chance 😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 587 ✭✭✭Seattle

Who deserved to win, who was the bigger club and by what margin, which team cost more, who benefits more from going through etc.

That's all blah blah blah as far as I'm concerned. All complete babble. Totally and utterly irrelevant to the principle of whether or not a team should be given a technical loss for a match they fielded an ineligible player in.

The standard practice for the EFL Cup is to impose a fine. Liverpool received a £200k fine in 2019 for fielding an under age substitute that hadn't their international clearance filed in a third round tie against MK Dons.
