@encryptix If you cancel the switch (with BWG or Flogas) you can revert back as you were moving supplier.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,192 ✭✭✭✭OmegaGene

once you are in a smart plan it’s smart plans going forward they can’t revert it

    The internet isn’t for everyone

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 539 ✭✭✭td2008

It can be done as part of a change of supplier. Once it's cancelled (by either supplier) Esbn will reverse the change.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,845 ✭✭✭Gooser14

They won't deactivate a smart meter once activated. I recently changed to a smart plan & it was made very clear to me that if I opted out within the 14 day cooling off period the activated smart meter would not be deactivated. My meter changed from MCC02 to MCC12.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 539 ✭✭✭td2008

MCC02 is a bit different and it can't be backdated, So Esbn don't allow that as part of the change of supplier process. In your case the supplier does a change of supplier to MCC02 and then a subsequent change to MCC12 which can't be reversed.

    https://cdn.rmdservice.com/media/docs/default-source/change-control/mcr---sitefinity/mcr1225---mcc02-meter-exchanges.pdf?sfvrsn=bb9e9314_1

    Design Limitations
    • As it is not possible to record Day / Night register readings and SST Day / Night / Peak register
readings on the meter simultaneously, it is not possible to backdate the change from MCC02 –
    MCC16 / MCC12.
    • Therefore Supplier requests for Smart Data Services as part of a Change of Supplier (CoS)
request (010MM) will be rejected via 102RMM with Reject Reason IA (Invalid Action) where a
Smart Meter configured to MCC02 exists at the MPRN.

cancelling a switch which activates a smart meter should unactivate a meter. I don’t have the wording from the ESB website to support that statement but I can find it tomorrow or the next day when I get the chance to look

The following is from the CRU.IE website:

"Suppliers have said that once a customer goes on a smart tariff, they cannot return to a standard tariff, either within the contract term or afterwards?

Once the “meter configuration code” (MCC) is changed to either Time of Use Tariff (MCC12) or a Standard Smart Tariff (MCC16), it cannot be reverted back to the original flat rate/24-hour tariff (MCC01).

However, this does not prevent the customer from moving back to a flat-rate tariff or stop energy suppliers from offering customers on Time of Use Tariff or a Standard Smart Tariff a flat rate tariff. A number of suppliers in the market offer the same flat rate tariff to customers, whether they are on a flat rate/24-hour tariff, Time of Use Tariff or a Standard Smart Tariff."

Based on the above, once the smart meter is activated it changes to MCC12 or MCC16 & cannot be changed back to MCC01 or MCC02. This in effect means that if you want a flat rate plan you are limited to the smart plans that may be offered by various suppliers.

I have read elsewhere that an option is to get the activated meter replaced at a cost of about €200 but I haven't heard of this being successfully done.

who is giving the best prices for gas at the moment? Contract with bord gais expires in less than a month..

we are all aware that when you activate a meter and switch to a smart tariff, you cannot go back.

However, that wording doesn’t deal with someone who cancels the switch.

As I said in my original post, I’ll find the wording when I get a chance. I don’t have a laptop for another day or two. When I get back to Ireland, I’ll find it (of course, I could also simply be misremembering something and just be wrong!)

    edit: see step 45 here

Signed up to Yuno last year, August 2024 and had told them I did not want a Smart plan. All the initial emails did not mention that I was on a Smart Plan and only today from reading here that I checked the MCC and its MCC12. I was ignorant to what MCC is so I assume this is user error and I have no recourse?

Also, if I switch suppliers, will I be able to revert back to non smart or have I misunderstood whats written here previously. Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Called then for a renewal quote and turns out the Smart Meter was activated but I am not on a Smart Plan. A Smart Plan funnily enough with Electric Ireland is my cheapest option (Non Smart from EI as comparison)

    Home Electric+ 24 Hour Saver 30% with €100 Online Welcome bonus - Unit 23.81c and SC 68.7c

Non Smart EnergySaver 26% with €75 Online Welcome bonus- Unit 25.11c and SC 68.7c

well I just initiated a move to electric ireland smart plan based on energy pal analysis. There doesn’t seem to be much difference between smart and non smart anymore so didn’t seem worth holding out.

Am due to start the annual horse trading ritual with Energia this week on non smart D/N, discount has gone down lately I see but I would hope to get a decent bit of credit off them- we'll see.On other companies D/N the best I can see are SSE and BG(my own usage is around 50/50) with SSE the best day rate-depends on your usage I suppose.

I can't see an issue date for the document you attached & the statement at step 45 does not align with the CRU's current directives on the matter.

if you signed up last year on 1st sep. is it today you're out of contact or is it tomorrow

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,357 ✭✭✭✭fits

I’d leave it to tomorrow. Won’t make much difference.

do the CRU have specific guidance for someone who initiates a switch then cancels? This situation is different to what you’ve linked above.

Very happy to be proven wrong! I’m certainly not 100% confident on this one!

I can't find guidance specifically covering the scenario stated. The CRU do give an example of a person who inadvertently signed up for a time-of-use tariff thereby activating his smart meter. The CRU didn't support his request to have his meter configuration returned to its original settings. I can find references to the effect that once the meter is activated it can not be deactivated.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,834 ✭✭✭bren2001

I don’t think either one of us has conclusive wording. What you share here is again, slightly different.

I’m aware once you go smart, you can’t go back. However, I don’t know how that fits in with EU law and cooling off periods with regards switching.

Frankly, I don’t know if cancelling a switch can unactivate a meter. What I linked is what I have. Until someone here tries to use it, I won’t know tbh.

I have put the question to the CRU & will let you know what they say on receipt of their response.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,627 ✭✭✭batistuta9

i know it doesn't but it'd be good to know for definite.

I'm with Energia, and the date the contract expires is on the top of their bills. Although, I don't know how they managed to have 10 days difference between the Gas and Electricity as I switched on the same day. Looking forward to the "Horse-trading" next month…. !!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,192 ✭✭✭✭OmegaGene

always best to wait until the day after to instigate a switch just to be safe, the one day without discount will only cost a few cents extra it’s not worth worrying about

Some people want to switch a day or two early for some reason

    The internet isn’t for everyone

I think it is Flogas as it has 30 euro welcome credit and lowest rate.

From the flogas deal earlier in the year I got 2 free emerald park tickets. They expire on the 8th of this month. I won't be using them so if anyone has plans to book emerald park soon, PM me and i'll give you the code. AFAIK the booking needs to be made before the 8th, but the booking date can be much later.

Just a heads up, I tried to redeem a voucher there and it's saying it's expired or invalid so there might be some faffing around with customer service to be able to use these.
