I'll always judge with my eyes over stats, Onana is a urine poor keeper,.

Yeah, it kinda amounts to the same thing. Whatever Martinez is better than Onana at, they still shipped the same amount of goals last season in the league. Spending 20m or whatever on a guy who performed as well or as bad as Onana last season doesn't seem like a great plan. The problem last season wasn't the keeper, it was the front line. This thread has a weird keeper obesssion when it comes to Utd.

Edit - and the midfield, obviously, the midfield for the last 20 years.

Onana has been a problem since he signed the contract, trying to rewrite history. It must be soul destroying playing in a team with him knowing he is almost guaranteed to give up a chance every game.

No wonder he was so indignant when his brother was dropped.

Harleymufc2 is where I go to for all my Manchester united news. Can't even afford a blue tick mark but he is solid

Stats dont show Onana retreating when one-on-one to give a striker as much space as possible.

Stats dont show Onana's slow reactions because he was jumping on the spot and wasnt grounded enough to launch himself across goal to try save.

Stats don't show Onana not being able to position himself properly so as not to be beaten at his near post.

Stats don't show Onana using his wrong hand to try and make a save.

If you can't tell the difference between Onana and Martinez I worry. Do some people just not bother watching games and just rely on XG and whoscored to tell them who is good and who isn't?

Stats show that Onana, working with a back three and, apparently, the worst Utd team in years, shipped the same amount of goals as Martinez, working with a settled back four and a team that finished 6th. If he is signed by Utd for 20m or whatever and chucked into a back three, one of us will be proven wrong. I'd estimate it'd still be 40 ish goals conceded.

Still no real mention of a DM or striker signing which is not good at this stage.

Not a utd fan..but anyone using "stats" to try and portray Onana as anything other than a liability has a big agenda. 🤣

What's the metric for the level of dread you instill in your centrebacks anytime there's a dangerous situation developing,?

Would prefer an experienced keeper but not a big Martinez fan, he has the same bozo gene Onana has. Knowing our luck Villa will get Lammens instead and we’ll be kicking ourselves in 6-12 months time.

I'd argue we should get 2 of these keepers and sell what we currently have

Particularly Onana should be no where near the squad

You could definitely get stats to tell you all that, I'm sure top analytics use such things.

I'm not entirely sure you know what stats are or mean tbh. You've always had a weird emotional reaction to them

Not a bad weekend for us, Newcastle, Spurs, City, Villa not getting 3 points.

Im not a big believer in stats, 99% of people can tell you stats can be manipulated to suit whatever agenda you are pushing.

But in particular stats don't translate to how to judge a GK. GK is absolutely a position where vibes or feels or whatever other buzz word you want to use to try and demean it, makes a huge difference. The kind of difference that stats just cant give you. You need to watch a GK to see how they react in certain situations, the positions they take up, the way they move their feet, the way they position their hands, the way they react to errors. This is all basic GK aspects that stats can't tell you. If its as simple as he conceded this many goals in this many games then sure why bother with goalkeeper coaches and specialised scouts.

Stats might tell you Martinez isnt an upgrade on Onana but actually watching them hits you in the face like a **** anvil that those two are barely playing the same sport. And I'm not even a huge fan of Martinez!

If you save a weak shot that gets dropped in front of oncoming opponent that then scores…..

How does that get marked in the Stato Guinness Book of Records then? ?

Probably gets marked as a save lol.

What I'd really like is a solid, no nonsense, no drama goalkeeper for a while. One that perhaps isn't world class, but is a reasonable price and does the job needed to settle the side down.

One that you can replace or upgrade again in a few years when the team is actually ready for a push again.

So I don't want spend money on Martinez, he is just another drama magnet. Is there really not another Sergio Romero out there anywhere that can do a job for a while?

There is always a balance with these things and with things like mentality, confidence and effect on other players is impossible track.

I watch a decent amount of premier league and see goalkeepers doing **** every week that onana gets pulled apart for by united fans, media and rival fans but other keepers barely get a mention

Now this is not a defense of onana post he is long past that, he has totally lost his way at united and lacks any confidence, but his treatment does remind me of Maguires when he went through his long bad run, he was making plenty of errors but people also blamed him for **** that wasn't his fault and worst defender ever etc etc.

No one has time to watch all football we on the united thread see all onanas games and faults but don't see others players so people presume they are just better because they don't get **** on as much or the two games they saw them play they didn't make a mistake, with stats you get all the info from every game without bias.

Now goals conceeded by a team isn't where id go to make an argument for or against a goalkeeper but at least it's a season worth of data.

I do know if he comes and is making the same level of mistakes he normally does he will come under a lot of scrutiny and hopeful is better able to deal with it then onana

First name that came to my head was Romero as I was reading your post. Such a luxury quality 2nd choice at the time.

Should have kept DDG. Another example of United trying to be too cute in the transfer market.
