Just Bayern, Chelsea and probably a few others. I absolutely think 70-80m is the going rate for that level of player. Chelsea were quoting 80m for Jackson who is 1/10th the player.

While I agree we do need a keeper in the overall scheme of things, hopefully as we seen on Sunday the defence as we seen on Sunday will be better. Apart from the goal Bayinder didn't have a lot of saves to make. Most of his work was dealing with the ball at his feet.

Worried for Mainoo given we were chasing the game and Ugarte was the one to come on for Casemiro. We're seeing why PSG were happy to cash in on Ugarte.

Strange to have the 15th place finishers as the 4:30pm game on Sky 2 weeks in a row. Makes for a long weekend waiting :-)

With Grimsby next Wednesday night that will give Amorim a chance to have a look at a few more players or sharpen some others up before the international break.

You might think someone who was freely using the word 'juxtaposed' would have known!

Is Eduardo Camavinga out of favour at Madrid. Would he be worth going for?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,440 ✭✭✭Quags

But its not up to Amorim to go and sign these players, he has obviously told those above him this is what he wants so its now up to them to go and get them. If we don't sign anyone then its failure on their side and not RA.

We also cant tell players who to sign for unfortunately😂 Otherwise we wouldn't be stuck with Sancho, Malacia, Onana along with others

Hmm, great player but a lot of injuries last season and currently recovering from another. Red flag for me, smells like Madrid want to offload and would likely use the funds for a Baleba bid themselves next year.

Surely to Christ our much vaunted recruitment team can come across an experienced Keeper in the next fortnight who doesn’t punch the ball into his own net etc etc.

If it’s a stopgap Keeper the budget shouldn’t go above 10m,with a proper GK to come in next Summer.

That should leave enough money in the kitty to bring in a DM and an experienced Striker to give Sesko an odd break.

And no I’m not talking Jamie Vardy levels of experience!🙂

Every bit as good a player as Baleba if we could get him

I agree, but its Amorim who will pay the price, not those above him

I hope there's some wholesale changes for the Grimsby game. Bruno will likely want to play because he wants to play every game but would like to see Cunha, Mbeumo,.Sesko, Casemiro, Dorgu, and Amad rested.

Don't really care about the LC until the semi finals and would rather not see certain players get injured playing away to a L2 team in the 2nd round of the LC.

    …........….....Onana

    ....…..Maz Maguire Heaven

    Dalot Ugarte Mainoo Amass/Leon

    ......…...…...X Mount

    ...........…..….Zirkzee

Bruno or Amad would have to start at 10 if Mbeumo doesn't play or RA dips into the academy to give someone a start. One of the Fletcher twins or Ethan Ennis.

The GK situation gets blown way out of proportion IMO. They'll try strengthen there next summer but it's not a position that needed immediate fixing like our forward line. We do need another body in midfield though, whether that's a 6 or 8 I'm not sure but I think the Bruno experiment won't last too long as he's costing us goals playing there.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

At the moment I don't know who would be a viable long term, hes our definitive #1 for the next 5 years option. I'd be looking to Meret at Napoli or Maignon at Milan and enquiring while about them why the Italian clubs are looking at Hojlund. Maybe a deal could be struck there? Onana could do a job in Serie A for sure maybe we could get a "swap" agreement involving him.

Amorim will be given a full season at least to turn the team around. He might get a lot of criticism in the meantime but it's just not worth speculating about his sacking before this season ends.

True but I do feel that regardless of outside noise UNLESS we are playing **** and right down at the bottom then he wont be sacked. He seems to be the man that INEOS want to succeed, has the backing of them when he wants players out of the squad (MR, AG, JS) and in parts on Sunday we looked good. The club has until Monday week at 7pm to try get a CM otherwise there will be games where we get battered

If you told me 12 months ago that we had a chance of sighing Camavinga and that he would cost approx 30m less than Baleba... I would have said (who's Baleba and) snap Camavinga up.

We thought we were signing a crock when we signed Mazroui and to a lesser extent, De Ligt. Never sign from Bayern etc. Both worked out very well (understand the irony of Mazroui being out at present).

If Madrid are selling because they intend to get Baleba next summer, and that was the main reason, it would give me some comfort in signing Camavinga. If Madrid are interested in Baleba, then we won't be in the running and I would happily take "a chance" on Camavinga.

Camavinga would be an incredible signing. He's a much better player already than Baleba is and he's only a year or 2 older.

However - If Real are selling him it means something must be wrong. Over the last couple of years it looks(TransferMarkt) like he picked up a fair few injuries - hamstring, knee ligament etc… Missed a good few games

Risky signing to be sure, particularly if the fee is high.

Camavinga on loan with an option would be worth a punt.

Unfortunately the time to have enquired about Meret would have been when we could have signed him as a free agent. Could have been a decent get as a stop gap before identifying a long term number one. And if reports are correct his wages are around €2.5M a year even after the new contract.

We'll see soon enough how much all those clubs interested in signing Garnacho are prepared to pay for for a journeyman.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,942 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

We won't though, cause Garnacho is rejecting them.

he only wants Chelsea, and Chelsa know that - so the price they can offer for him is a lot less than you would likely get if there were a few clubs fighting for him

The thing about Onana is he's not guaranteed to be a liability. He has apparently had dodgy spells throughout his career and he tends to recover before relapsing again. This happened at Ajax and also at United. He was actually ok for us for about 6-8 months (the second half of 23/24 and the first part of 24/25).

Even when he is making lots of errors, he still does some good stuff alongside it. He's definitely unreliable which is a problem but isn't god awful in the way Hojlund was at CF for example. I would like a new GK but there's not that many keepers who you could guarantee would be a major improvement on him in the medium to low transfer fee range. It's a very hit and miss position to fill imo. Basically, if we spent 20m on a new GK then it wouldn't shock me to see a performance level similar to Onana.

For example, Sanchez was decent at Brighton but has been a major problem at Chelsea. Kepa was good for Bournemouth but failed at Chelsea. Go back as far as Tim Howard - very good for Everton but not at Utd. Onana was excellent for Inter, not for us. It's one of those positions where you can't just transport the player and expect the exact same performance, especially at Utd where you're under immense scrutiny. I think you need a very strong personality to be a near guaranteed success which is why we were linked to Emi Martinez and Donnarumma.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,689 ✭✭✭Cotts72

I think United will wait another week to test villas resolve with Emi Martinez. Will be telling if he's benched this weekend in favour of the new keeper they signed. That being said I like the look of Lammens and wouldn't mind him coming in as a no2 with the intention to usurp Onana as No1 eventually. Solves the GK position for years at least.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,771 ✭✭✭✭JRant

That young keeper they sent on loan is supposed to be very highly rated by the club. They may just want to wait a season to see how he does and then bring him into the team. Would save a ball of money if he worked out

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 17,868 ✭✭✭✭keane2097

There does seem to be this notion going around that you could spend tiny money on basically any goalkeeper and they would be a guaranteed improvement over Onana and it's completely **** delusional.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,316 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

Agree with you but I would probably just rephrase it slightly. A very strong personality is the absolute minimum requirement for playing in goal for us, but it still doesn't come close to guaranting success.

I think Onana is a very strong character, he has come under a huge amount of scrutiny and he has never really hid from it... Hiding from corners or hiding on his line… that's another issue.

I think Martinez is the signing for us to make this summer. PL proven, has the character, and has huge game experience. It's a 2-3 year band-aid that could work while allowing us time to develop a younger keeper. I would rate Donnarumma as a better keeper but I think Martinez makes more sense for where we are at present.

    This is the way,

Maz had an incredible injury record before he joined us, ended up playing most of the season and being Mr. Reliable.

I'm not so sure. He wants huge money, has a huge ego and he's error-prone. I don't think he fits Amorim's team profile at all.
