I reckon they were never going to sell, so set a huge price, confident in him having a stellar season this year.

Screams a Man City will come in for a Rodri replacement next summer so set high now and get more next summer.

That would make complete sense for Brighton. Get a full season out of Baleba this year and there's a good chance, if he performs well and stays injury free, that City or other leading clubs in need of his talents who have a high chance of winning leagues and the CL etc will break the bank for him next year.

    Smart asset management by Brighton.

No that's the price they likely want. Caicedo money for a player they rate just as good if not better than what Caicedo was when he went to Chelsea at the same age with the same PL experience.

I think it's safe to say the ship has sailed on Baleba after today. No way we are anywhere close to a deal next summer

I could see Amorim pushing for hjulmand at this point

i dunno who they go for. at least we know they have ID'd CM as needing reinforcements and we know there is considerable money to spend there (else why do this dance with baleba?).

unsure if baleba and hjulmand are the same profile CM's. if no, no point going for hjulmand if baleba is the profile of CM they want. will look at the stats in a bit more detail tomorrow.

I would be disappointed if we have 60/70m avaiable for a midfielder and Hjulmand is the answer we come up with.

Not that he wouldn't improve our midfield - a lot of players would.
But I would like to get a player with a higher potential ceiling for the money we apparently have available

From Brighton's point of view - a couple of weeks back there was no talk of a big club making a move for him yet.
Brighton know he will eventually make that move but they likely feel that this wasn't going to be the summer when there was no reports of interest from any of the big clubs.

So they planned their pre-season build up with the expectation that Baleba would be part of their team this season.

Then a week ago Utd start making noise that they would be interested. Brighton are well within their right at that stage to say OK here is the fee that makes it too good for us to turn down this summer - otherwise we will keep the player for 1 more season and sell for a massive fee next summer.

They will be saying the same thing to Baleba - give then another season and he'll have his pick of clubs..

It feels like I say this for almost every transfer now but Utd have to draw a line with their valuation as well.
If Utd feel a fair price is 70/80m and Brighton are asking for 40+ on top then Utd have to move onto their next best target

Douglas Luiz on loan maybe given his PL experience. Would worry if they rush out to get a midfielder in before the window closes could end up with another Ugarte.

This. If we could find out who Brighton have earmarked to replace Baleba, Tony Blooms scouting network is based on a "Betting odds" programme . They probably have 3 choices at any given time, and not just confined to Europe.

Can't see us getting top 5 with current GK squad, it's the start point of the spine of any good side, ours is so bad. Obviously AR thinks we need an upgrade in midfield too, if we can't get those 2 positions sorted, no way top 5. Missing 2 from spine.

Just wait until arsenal waltz through our midfield tomorrow, the Baleba stuff will return

Brighton are a (developing and) selling club, who are well run and don't need to panic sell. They will take whatever they're looking for imo, and then move onto bringing in the next guy they can sell for similar. But if they don't get want they're looking for, they won't sell. It's an incredibly strong hand they have in general.

The price they're looking for has future potential built into it, I can't imagine that they'll be getting or looking for a significant amount more next summer.

Paying someone well doesn't mean they'll be good / better at their job. We should know that as United fans.

Brighton's owner is a professional gambler (that's underselling him), they obviously have some way of interpretating the data better than others. Brentford owner is similar. I would guess that the scouting departments of a lot of clubs consist mainly of "football people" where theirs is made up of "data freaks".

Let's just hope with all this money being spent we can score a few goals this year, I'd happily lose a few games 4-3, 3-2 if we're attacking, scoring goals and exciting to watch.

I think so, plus they will want a bit of a bidding war between clubs to really ramp up the price. City and Liverpool will both throw huge offers in for him IMO. Better to move on to other targets and forget about him.

I don’t think the protest was cancelled cause new signings and chat off a new CM. It was the backlash to INEOS being put in the same boat as the Glazers, INEOS have not being perfect but they’ve done more for the club than the other gang. Club is looking to be in a healthy position in the background at least with upgraded facilities and improvements to data science etc

People seem to think that INEOS can do what they want and everything falls back onto them while the Glazers AGAIN seem to get a free run

Re Baleba, Liverpool set precedent by offering the preposterously stupid price of £110m for Caicedo 2 summers ago, Brighton will expect that for any midfielder they have with potential.

Having had the Baleba excitement for the past week whoever comes in now will have me like a kid at Xmas who wanted a ps5 and got a PS4 😂🤣

Has anyone here seen much of Hjulmand? If we do go for him what should we expect as a player?

Not too much. Handful of games and YouTube clips.

Reminds me of Xhaka meets McTominay.

Nothing phenomenal but solid upgrade on Ugarte I think/hope.

Can't see City spending £120m on him, it's not their MO. They'll but 2 midfielders for 60m each and get rid of the worse one after a year. Chelsea will buy him and spread the payments out over 20 years...

Not to lean too much on the stats but are Hjulmand’s stats not worse than Ugarte? Not only in the interceptions/tackles section but also quite similar in terms of passing and progressive passing. In a softer league too.

Theres sometimes been this notion that we just needed a really strong CDM or double pivot to enable others (basically Fernandes) to be freed up to create. Would be great to tick the box of someone who can progress the ball too.

There’s actually a part of me that wishes we weren’t doing 90% of transfers at either 1) big money/premiums to firefight big issues or 2) picking up bargain basement squad players that might develop.

The need for instant improvements means we generally can’t be in the market for the next Baleba to develop over the next season. Then again, people have no patience when it does happen and there is inconsistency like Dorgu.

Ugarte could also come good this season. I'm not as committed to idea he's a busted flush just yet.

Same as Mainoo's development as a player. He is still so young, who knows what he turns out to be.

Scholes was dismissed multiple times in his early career.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,476 ✭✭✭CantGetNoSleep

A lot of people forget that Mainoo started in a major international final a year ago. No way Amorim should be allowed cast him aside to sign overpriced players he coached before. We know how that turned out for EtH

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,776 ✭✭✭Iseedeadpixels

He suits a 3 man midfield, we'd have to sack Amorim and bring in a 4-3-3 coach just for Mainoo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,297 ✭✭✭thefa

I’m don’t think Ugarte is finished either but I think he probably won’t become that well rounded a CDM. Would be disappointed if we spend big money to buy the exact same profile of player who hasn’t any premier league experience.

Mainoo is an interesting one alright. Load of talent but just doesn’t seem to have found a consistent position in the current formation. Part of me thinks we have a few players that are most suited to the 10 roles than the centre mid roles (if you had to choose one). Mainoo arguably one of them. Along with Mount, maybe even Fernandes. Position we’ve bought two dynamic players in the summer for.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,297 ✭✭✭thefa

I was trying to plot out what a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 looks like with the current squad. They were saying we would start buying players suited to all formations but it looks quite frail defensively.

    Onana, Dorgu, Multiple, Yoro, Dalot

    1 of Ugarte/Casemeiro 2 of Mainoo/Fernandes/Mount

    Amad/Mbeumo, Sesko, Cunha

Ugarte is 24, I wouldn't write hin off yet either, started well last season and I remember a cup game vs Arsenal where he ran the show….
