Get this season started as soon as possible.

What are you actually talking about?

Are you talking about Connacht taking young players from Leinster straight into their academy, poaching from the Leinster academy or taking from the Leinster senior squad?

There are c. 23 or 24 guys from Leinster in the Connacht squad and academy, plus another 3 or 4 who went to school in Leinster, yet you are constantly moaning about wanting more Leinster players to move to Connacht.

What if the kid had got enough points to get offers from both but some overseeing body ordered the offer from one withheld to engineer him going where they wanted?

Those are players "from" Leinster, not players who have been through Leinster Academy.

Leinster Academy has done zero for a number of those players.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,886 ✭✭✭FtD v2

32 of the players on that list were in the Leinster Academy.

Can we not go down the conspiracy theory route? The IRFU don't and never will have the power to stop a 3rd level institute from offering a place to a student.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,133 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

    Cool beans.

And as far as I can see, precisely one of them - Rory McGuire - is at Ulster. That's Leinster Academy doing "an awful lot of work" on behalf of Ulster?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,895 ✭✭✭RichieRich_89

That's not what I'm saying. I was just making Ersatz's analogy more accurate if he wants a system where academy entrants are directed where to go by the IRFU.

Aitzol King is at Ulster, John Cooney and David O’Connor aren’t long out the door.

Leinster’s underage structures had a considerable amount of development in Jack Murphy, Sam Berman, Will de Klerk and Tom Brigg too. The fact Jack Murphy was around the place a wet week and was starting games at 10 is a fairly clear illustration of that.

Some 'overseeing body' is literally how rugby works, and pretty much everything else. People are creating epistemological sand castles to argue that local kids have a right to be trained as professional rugby layers by the IRFU in a location of their choosing. Not how anything works in life.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,133 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

    David O'Connor? Really?

Look, you said Leinster Academy, and now it's all about "underage structures". You were gently fact-checked.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,886 ✭✭✭FtD v2

I think you’ll find I didn’t say anything, the first post I responded to was your utterly nonsensical post that Leinster or the Academy had had nothing to do with the list provided, until I pointed out at least 32 of them had been through the Academy, so I think you’ll find I’m not the one being “fact checked” here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,372 ✭✭✭ersatz

Yeah, I guessed there would be push back on the list (though the majority have gone through the Leinster academy) but it is stark and underlines the basic point that Leinster schools produce and massive surplus of players that Irish rugby benefits from and that's the persecutive I think we should be seeing it through. It has something to do with Leinster Rugby, though of course their academy is the main beneficiary of that school pipeline. Other provinces benefit from both the schools output and often (more than half that list) from what's being done in Leinster's academy. But from an Irish pov are we getting everything we can out of the schools pipeline or are we losing some potential to Leinster's over abundance?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,133 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

Sorry, thought you were Ersatz, who said "Leinster academy doing an awful lot of work on behalf of the other provinces". Reading comprehension poor on my part

My point was simply that Ulster has one Leinster Academy graduate playing for us. I don't really care about the other 31.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,342 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

Paul can fight his own battles but this….

the first post I responded to was your utterly nonsensical post that Leinster or the Academy had had nothing to do with the list provided

…is misrepresenting what he was saying. He didn't say anything like that. He specifically said:

Leinster Academy has done zero for a number of those players.

He was right for something like 35 out of the 67, right?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,133 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

Yeah, I absolutely don't disagree with your wider point at all.

But bear in mind, Ulster are infinitely more important to me than Leinster, so if I see something that's a misrepresentation of what's currently happening up here, especially based on something concrete like that list, I'll mention it.

I suppose we wait and see what happens with the investment in the underage pathways outside Leinster. I'm also hoping Dan Soper's new role drives standards up considerably North of the border.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,886 ✭✭✭FtD v2

    No, fwiw, he wasn’t.

The vast majority of players on that list were in the sub-academy or played in Leinster underage sides.

@ersatz ’s original point of Leinster generally doing a lot of heavy lifting for the other provinces is an absolutely true statement.

But, as per usual, you’re here for bullshit nitpicking instead of actually making any substantive points.

To be precise, the phrase used was:

“Leinster academy doing an awful lot of work on behalf of the other provinces.”

Rephrase it to something else if you want to make a different claim.

Calling a spade a spade is not melodramatic.

Of course players don't have the right to play wherever they want - however we are talking about situations where both a player and their local province want him to play for them.

Instead you want to tell that kid that if he wants to continue towards professional rugby in this country he must move and go to college on the other side of the country.

I don't even understand where you're coming from at this stage. You seem to be proposing we need to move to a 'to hell or to Connacht/Ulster/Munster' model while also posting evidence that 60+ Leinster developed guys are playing elsewhere - which to me is a sign of system that is functioning quite well. How many Leinster players playing elsewhere is enough?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 216 ✭✭Juventu4

Lad I don't believe those stats especially as I've been standing beside him before and trust me he ain't 6 foot, he's definitely smaller than the stats, I'd be surprised if he's even 100kg. Not powerful enough and isn't a threat at the breakdown.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,349 ✭✭✭✭Foxtrol

If you want to be precise, are you claiming that the academy and sub-academy are completely different entities? That no academy resources are utilized on sub-academy or underage players?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,372 ✭✭✭ersatz

35 odd players from the L academy at other provinces is quite a lot of work. 70 odd from Leinster schools/clubs starts to look like dependency. In reality using a provincial lens to understand this just invites resentment and pissing contests, it's pointless. Leinster has the lions share of population and certainly the most significant production line of players through its schools. Leinster rugby doesn't own that and it's basically fallen into its lap as an accident of geography. The IRFU does own it though, and it their responsibility to make the most of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 42,026 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

How many of those players came from the Leinster academy or senior squad?

Or are you now saying that Leinster own all the rugby schools as well?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 42,026 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

You know well what the sub academy is. It's an outreach to suggest to as many school kids as possible that 'hey, we are looking at you'. It's about keeping all the talent interested until they decide who to cast off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,372 ✭✭✭ersatz

Unbeleivebale! Read threads before posting questions that have been answered numerous times. The whole point is that the players produced by Leinster schools/clubs are falling into Leinster rugby's lap and are haphazardly distributed. It's IRFU's responsibility to make the most of player resources in Ireland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,372 ✭✭✭ersatz

"however we are talking about situations where both a player and their local province want him to play for them", is very straight forward except the IRFU is paying for it! I also want a house in Spain and an MBA from Harvard, will the IRFU fund it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,886 ✭✭✭FtD v2

The thing is anyway, the Leinster Schools pipeline is probably not missing a huge amount of talent - there is enormous scrutiny and media coverage of the games, the players are well known etc. In recent years we’ve seen more and more guys move elsewhere if they aren’t getting a Leinster Academy offer (or in some cases moving a year earlier).

To me, the exciting future for Leinster rugby lies in the players coming out of the clubs. It’s been growing strongly in recent years and having four guys from that pathway starting for the Leinster U19s is a good illustration of that. Lots of talent out there from non traditional rugby areas.

If you want to make a tangential point / broaden the context of a discussion, etc. by all means do so.

But you are objectively mis-quoting people while doing so.
