I have an overgrown Ash tree in my Garden. A guy called to the door offering to trim at the top and sides. What is the position regarding public liability ie if he falls am I liable?

If you have a thriving ash tree you're lucky. Dieback disease has done huge damage to the ash population.

No matter what tree it is though I would never give a job like that to somebody who comes knocking at the door. Tree surgeons are very busy, as difficult to get hold of as a plumber. If that chap is actively looking for jobs he's almost certainly a chancer.

    As above.

You seek out tradesmen not other way around.

    PolPolitely decline.

I'd put money on it that he wasn't actually a tree surgeon (maybe he was some form of gardener) nor was he insured.
