40% of kids arriving to school hungry in this country is complete and utter fallacy and deserves nothing more than ridicule.

I went to school in the 80s when no one had a pot to piss in and I never arrived hungry. Any child who does so today should be removed from their parents full stop. There is no other reason other than neglect.

During the UK boom in food banks under the recent Tory government most food banks reported that food was usually down the list of what parents wanted. They needed food banks for toiletries, sanitary products and cleaning products because generally even the poorest parents will spend what little they have to feed the kids and it's everything else you can't afford.

At a guess a fair amount of that 16% have alcohol or drug abuse problems at home.

Funny enough the places where kids are going to school hungry are also the ones with chronic levels of serious child obesity.

Don't forget, in just 2 months time, we'll be hearing how households are spending over a €1000 on a school uniform for each child.

I presume you know the Eurostat study is based on the data collected by CSO for the consumer price index?

The price level for HFCE in Ireland has been in second place in the EU for several years.

Also, we are close to DK, who in first place.

no family in this country is in receipt of any less then €242 + €50 per child under 12 and €62 per child over 12. There’s a further €162 if there’s a second adult in the home.

The first duty you have is to pay your rent. Remember, any family on this type of SW allowance us having their rent heavily subsidised.

The next duty you have is to have enough food in the house so that your children aren’t hungry.

There are still ultra cheap options in basics like bread milk breakfast cereal fruit veg cheap cuts of meat pasta etc.
