have it on good authority there’ll be a game for Ireland announced today

Interesting to see if it happens.

I've said before on another thread that it's not something I could see happening based on the fact that Ireland is so small a market for a game when you have much bigger markets in places like mainland Europe and South America as potential venues.

Arizona has a population of 7 million. A test of any market is of interest to the NFL. Florida has a population of 22 million to share between three NFL teams and three huge college teams.

I'm not sure what you point is.

The NFL and the other 3* sports have franchises in Arizona in the last 30 years or so because it's was and probably still is a growing market in the US.

    It's a long term strategy.

As a location for a one off, annual or bi-annual NFL game however I find Ireland a strange choice when you have the likes of Paris, Amsterdam, Rome, Milan, Stockholm, Berlin, Lima, Rio, Buenos Aires, Bogota, Mexico City as possible locations.

The above are bigger markets than Ireland, in most cases their metros are have much bigger populations than Dublin, and some are as big and bigger than the population of Ireland itself.

A game in those places would have a much bigger marketing reach.

I'm not saying a game could not be held in Ireland, it has the infrastructure to host one no problem, I just think it's an odd choice if it is chosen.

*I'm aware the NHL team oved to Utah recently.

Arizona's 7million people have rather a lot more interest in the NFL than the population of Ireland, too. Its not remotely comparable on a population basis.

Getting the attention (and money) of fans here who already follow the GAA/football/rugby will be far harder.

About 10,000 Irish people travel to London each year for NFL games. You'd fill a stadium here no problem. There could even be potential here for more games. Just like many travel to London for games from Ireland there's lots of people from the UK that would travel here.

Dan Rooney loves the place too. If he wants to have a game here it'll happen.

I said already that staging a game here would be no problem and I agree it would sell out.

But staging it many other cities in Europe and South America would be no problem either and it would sell out there also.

I don't get what would make Ireland special, and as I said on another thread Rooney's love of Ireland does not trump David Tepper or Woody Johnson's love of maximizing the profit from an international game.

What extra profit are you going to make from having it somewhere else?

Full stadium, live on TV, plenty of merchandise sold. What will they make elsewhere that they won't in Ireland?

Irish ticket 'price-point' would be quite high as well, perhaps marginally higher than some of the other European cities and definitely higher than South America. Could see them chancing their arm at an average of $400, even $500, with a few token tickets at $250.
Geographically our location is a minor help as well, that 90/120 minutes closer to the USA East coast (than Central Europe) is important. We would be a venue that wouldn't necessarily need teams to take their bye-week after a game here.

Anyway, nothing mentioned yesterday. Only thing Goodell said is he wants to go to an 18-game season with 16 international games within the next 5 years. So I suspect it is that medium-term expansion for which we might come into play.

Just heard on the "Heed the Call" podcast that they will be collaborating with Sky Sports, like the old Around the NFL podcast did.

It's interesting that Sky are going with them rather than anything official from the NFL.

So another former Steelers receiver doing odd things. Diontae Johnson refused to go into the game against Philly last Sunday.

Another rugby player trying his hand with the IPP.

Not to be a cynic or anything but it's been shown to that it's almost impossible for people who have never played the game before to adapt to the skill positions.

LRZ is a perfect example, on the practice squad of one of a team with one of the worst rosters in the game.

    CB Eric Allen

    DE Jared Allen

    OT Willie Anderson

    OG Jahri Evans

    TE Antonio Gates

    WR Torry Holt

    LB Luke Kuechly

    QB Eli Manning

    WR Steve Smith Sr.

    EDGE Terrell Suggs

    RB Fred Taylor

    K Adam Vinatieri

    WR Reggie Wayne

    S Darren Woodson

    OL Marshal Yanda

These are the fifteen finalists for the 2025 hall of fame. Up to five on this list can be selected for enshrinement in the HOF.

I think Eli and Antonio Gates are pretty certain. Kuechly should be but as we've often seen a short career diminishes your chances even though he had to retire due to multiple concussions.

Darren Woodson is well overdue. It's shocking that Jared Allen never got a dpoy. Jahri Evans is one of the best guards of all time but guards don't get in quickly. Willie Anderson a great tackle.

Anyway Eli and Gates and it's hard to predict after that.

I'm very much a sceptic when it comes to talk of a NFL game in Dublin.

I'll believe it when I see it.

But this is the most definitive I've seen yet about one.

This is coming from a Pittsburgh media source.

Not once but twice, a QB with two Superbowl wins is always going to be first ballot.

Let's be real though, he's only getting because of 2007 and the narrative. Nick Foles and Trent Dilfer aren't sniffing the HOF. Edelman isn't getting in, despite fitting the whole "can't tell the story of the NFL without him" angle. It's a joke Eli will be in.

He's 11th all time in passing yards and touchdowns.

I never rated him but those numbers and the rings guarantee it.

Mike McCarthy is out in Dallas.

Raiders hire Pete Carroll. Very smart move. You can hire a promising up and comer and it might work out but hiring Pete Carroll is a much smarter move. He'll bring stability and he'll make the franchise more enticing to players and coaches.

He'll make the organisation function as it should. Obviously winning games is important but even if that doesn't happen the franchise will be in a much healthier state after he's gone.

AFC West coaches - Andy Reid, Sean Payton, Jim Harbaugh, Pete Carroll. That’s a serious list of names.

Anyone else catch the Aaron Rodgers doc on Netflix? The man is a looper, I'm convinced he has some form of CTE already- couldn't be that alternative without something happening medically.

Living in America his views are shockingly common and they're not all being tackled by NFL defensive linemen. This kind of brain rot is just happening anyway. High profile gobsh1tes like AR are making it worse.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 41,917 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

He's apparently always been that way. Doesn't speak with his family, felt he knew more about the game than his college head coach, and Matt Le Fleur when he arrived in Green Bay, returned any Christmas gifts he didn't like.

He was touted as the no.1 pick in the draft coming out of college but fell to 24th because of some of the things mentioned above. He got worse, or let it out more, when he had a few great seasons and felt like he was unquestionable.

The cowboys press conference announcing the new head coach was utterly bizarre. I should laugh at it being an eagles fan because it’s the cowboys, but honestly I don’t see what’s funny. Jerry jones is actively hindering the team he owns and runs as GM. His son Stephen seemed to think the championship drought, where he used air quotes for, was funny. Any cowboys fans find it funny ?

    Twenty five years ago today.

Edit: I was going to say thanks to eagle eye eagles eyes but that would be stupid.

not always - Jim Plunkett is a 2 time Super Bowl winner and he is still waiting for the gold jacket. Even as a raider fan I can see why he hasn’t got in with his stats - I know you are referencing modern day QB focussed league but it wouldn’t hurt for Eli to wait for a turn or 2. I equate Eli’s career to somewhere near Kurt Warner who eventually got in.
