Bears still in bottom 3 teams in league now for many years, and very likely to get relegated to the NFZ.

Well today the season finally gets put out of its misery. I never shout for a bears loss, especially against the Packers, but I would say a hammering today could at least be a catalyst for firing Poles. Not that I am totally against him, but two things: 1) I'm tired of us staggering the firing processes so that we are always in chaos, and 2) plenty of talk that Ben Johnson wants a call on who will be his GM, a condition that the jaguars seem intent on meeting, and that I think is actually pretty reasonable, and may be necessary if we are going to get the man who is easily the best candidate this year.

Go for it on 4th down and get the yards. Then try a trick play with Keenan Allen throwing a crazy interception with nothing on. They are not a serious organisation.

    Wait….fumble….ball back!!

Somehow got back up the field to win it with a field goal! Thought they'd blew it, as usual, with the fumble that gave possession back after the two minute warning'.

Yeah I'd written it off at that stage tbh, looked like the usual bottle job

    Unbelievable.

Build the god damn team around Caleb (and sack anyone who’s fingerprints were anywhere near the offensive play book this season).

Watching the lions right now, goddamn I want Ben Johnson in Chicago tomorrow, whatever it takes they need to get him, no more arsing around. If he demands Poles be fired, then Poles should be filling a box with his belongings by lunch time.

    Nice moment for Thomas Brown:

And for the players, they never gave up in fairness, would've been tough to end the season on an 11-game losing streak. Happy for them, Cairo Santos and Caleb Williams. Gives a bit of hope for next season.

They've also requested to interview the Giants OC, which would be genuinely hilarious in fairness, a 5 win team hiring a 3 win coach. There's a grim streak of humour in me that hopes they do this.

Hehe, they are casting the net wide, I think I've heard about 10 names so far.

I do think they go for a more conventional pick this time around, Ben Johnson or Vrabel (if they accept). I think they've had enough of messing around with off-the-wall hires in recent years. I think they realise they've got a rare talent in QB, and it will be a case of 'don't muck this up'.

Vrabel is being interviewed tomorrow, and I thought that was when Johnson was due for interviews too, but haven't heard anything confirmed there.

Well I know they can only do virtual interviews with Johnson right now as they're in the playoffs. I read that he has expressed an interest only in the bears or the Patriots. If I were him I would probably go to new England, if I had the choice, but at least we are in the running of those rumours are true. Also, by all accounts the smart money is on vrabel to the Patriots. I hope that's how it pans out, I'm not fond of any other available candidates and I'd be massively excited about next season if we got Johnson in the door.

Yeah, was watching a live CHGO thing on Youtube earlier, they were reporting on the Bears press conference today (https://www.youtube.com/live/qbh7JyLP7Ew).

A couple of things I picked up...

Vrabel is in the building tomorrow.

I think Ben Johnson is doing the Zoom-call on Thursday, a bit worryingly the Bears are planning to have about 10 people on the call, including HR, and these kind of people. (https://x.com/adamjahns/status/1876681111008416253)

In the press-conference, the Bears were evasive on whether Poles had been extended, they assume that to mean 'no', and he has one year to run on his contract.

They were speculating that it could be a 1-year wait-and-see how he gets on with the new head-coach (Hoge said something from off-the-record that he heard Johnson would be prepared to work with Poles)

Oh dear Jesus I just watched some of the press conference, if I'm Ben Johnson I wouldn't touch this organization with a barge pole. George should never, ever be in front of a camera, because every time I hear him I get a new insight into just how incompetent he is and how illogical the running of the organization is under his watch. Apart from his stupid nonsense criticizing the fans about lions fans getting tickets to soldier field (turns out he sold suites to lions fans himself), he was so inept answering the GM question...as was Warren.

The whole impression the two of them gave was that Poles is a dead man walking. As always with the bears, though, they can't just pull off the plaster, and instead they are going to let him zombie on for one more year. This signals to Johnson, who has already said that stability is very important to him at the GM position, that they have no stability at all. Indeed, no top candidate will likely want such a role.

And it also continues their incredible habit of doing everything arse backwards, getting the QB in 24, the HC in 25, and probably the GM in 26, who will arrive, once again, with no choice over his own HC, thereby ensuring that any top candidate won't want the role. We can see a pattern forming here, in fact it's a pattern we're fairly familiar with.

After today it would be shocking to me, to my very core, if Johnson or Vrabel went near the bears, and it looks much more likely that we'll get some second rate ass kisser who doesn't use bad language as usual.

Maybe I'm overreacting, and maybe we still get Johnson, but even if we do that, today really demonstrated that we will not put anyone in the best position to succeed. Probably ever.

Did you all get your invites to interview for the head coach position yet? Presume we'll all get one this week anyway.

There was a private flight from Detroit to Chicago this afternoon that people on twitter started saying was Ben Johnson arriving, and this madman live streamed from the airport waiting to see if he'd get off the plane. Then he went inside and asked the workers if they had the flight log with Ben Johnson's name on it while 9,000 people watched. This fanbase is not mentally stable 😂

And while he was inside asking the staff, Schefter confirmed that BJ is the new coach. Still don't know if he was on that particular plane or not but it has been an enjoyable evening following this chaos.

Woooo! I'm genuinely surprised they did it, and maybe as fans we tend to become too obsessed with the idea of the organization as being incompetent, but whatever, they did the right thing here instead of getting clever or cheap. Hopefully he works out and so does Williams!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,335 ✭✭✭padraig_f

    Wooh! Absolutely delighted. 😀

He was my number one choice by a long shot.

The model I see for it is Sean Payton/Drew Brees in New Orleans. Stability on the offensive side. Those Saints teams never had very good defenses, but were still always in the playoffs (and always entertaining to watch, one of the other teams I really enjoyed watching).

I just think it's the model now, you really need an offensive head-coach. (examples, Sean McVay, Kyle Shanahan, Sean Payton, and then on the upper-end, Andy Reid/Mahomes.

You look at Detroit now, and for all the recent success they've had, there's gonna be some instability now on the offensive side.

Whereas with the Chiefs, Spagnuolo's doing a great job on the defense, but much less likely to be poached.

Was a bit worried the Raiders might swoop in with some crazy $100m/10-year offer (although I think that would've been a really bad football decision for Johnson), or he could've gone to the Patriots, where Drake Maye has had a very good rookie season. So delighted it got done.

Not to read too much into one game but the lions offense definitely didn't look remotely like the one we saw last year, which hopefully bodes well for us now that Johnson is running the show. I'll be honest I've not followed the off season at all this year, I watched the draft and that was it. But I'm excited to see what he makes of Williams, and if he can transform the o line.

Have to teach until after kick off tomorrow night, the university system in this country is fundamentally broken with no respect shown to the sanctity of Monday night football.

    Oh well. Same ole bears.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15 CivilServant10

Yeah gave us hope on the first drive and then gradually sucked that hope away as the game went on

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,262 ✭✭✭✭Realt Dearg Sec

Yeah I don't want to read too much into one game, but it was so familiar as to be uncanny. The offense gradually falling apart in its ability to execute (along with the depressing return of passes behind the line of scrimmage at crucial moments, that always get obliterated immediately), the defense starting really strongly and then over time getting worn down, and then giving up massive, morale-sapping chunks in the running game in particular. Nothing that happened was really much different from last year. Williams avoided getting sacked so much, which was good, but he was AVOIDING it, running for his life because he wasn't getting good protection. So, the o-line is still not right either. So yeah, everything about it reflected the things that were wrong under Eberflus.

Now, Rome wasn't built in a day, so maybe we don't need to despair. But there is some serious work needed right now.

One bit of good news is the Lions looked even worse than us last week, so at least we're not going up against anyone brimming with confidence. But they will have a big point to prove against Johnson.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,262 ✭✭✭✭Realt Dearg Sec

That opening drive wouldn't exactly full you with confidence. Detroit met zero resistance at all, either running or passing. This is going to be a long day. And a long season.

What a deeply embarrassing team the bears are to support.

Not sure I can keep doing it to be honest.
