    You will indeed.

The throne won't thank you for it either.

You have a point there Lewis……now the “half dozen “ would be be over a good period so no bad effects.

Over did it in the early days and left several ‘blowouts’ like a bad jumbo can of Shines Tuna Chunks in the pot.

Liking the beers from this brewery. First time having them this year. Had a big bottle of their barrell reserve the other night. Nice to have some Brett beers for Christmas.

Just opened a bottle of 200 Fathoms tonight, and it's gone off. I was really looking forward to it, so I'm really disappointed.

Opened a Weihenstephaner gift box this evening.

    First was pils.

    Second was 1516 kellerbier.

Now on the helles, which is cloudier than I expected.

Just to double check / clarify - the helles is not a weiss bier, isn't that correct?

I heard from a offy owner in Dublin that Belgian ales have gotten less popular, people have been switching to German.

The reason given was the high ABV.

How true that is, or how widespread, I don't know.

I have seen more German 50cl bottles around, more brands that I have not seen before.

Try telling that to a German 😂

    (I've made that mistake!)

What beer are we drinking this week? All of them, I think.

Had the Galway bay "kreik". I really liked it. Pretty sour and complex.

I think I mentioned this a while back, but McHughs and Martins both told me that they were seeing a little upsurge in people buying German bottled beers.

At the time I thought it could be related to the can recycling scheme. Before it came in, I'd always have bought cans rather than glass bottles, to save myself a trip to the bottle bank. Once it got to a point where I was going to have to sort cans to regain money, I decided that was at least as inconvenient as a trip to the bottle bank, so I started buying bottled beers again — and diving back into the German stuff was the obvious choice after that.

Martins said they thought people were also a bit jaded with the craft scene and were having a moment of turning to simpler fare (if I can describe German beer that way, without being pulled up on some point of order).

Is Weihenstephaner Vitus as good as this guy says it is?

    Vitus is good.

Though if I wanted a strong weissbeer, I'd prefer the much darker Schneiderweiss Aventinus.

Saw a brief article in a magazine saying that some people are asking barmen to do a mid-strength Guinness, by combining 1/2 NA Guinness and 1/2 regular Guinness.

So, in effect, recreating Guinness mid-strength, although not quite the same I guess.

Might not appeal to everyone, but I actually think it's not a crazy idea, I 100% would order Guinness mid-strength in a few situations, I think it was an idea that was ahead of its time.

I thought there was something about the NA Guinness not coming in kegs though, does it actually flow on tap in pubs in a way that you can easily combine it with regular Guinness in a pint?

AFAIK, Guinness 0.0 does exist in keg form. It would just need its own dedicated chiller so it doesn't freeze in the line.

I order 0.0 regularly, and it always comes from a standard tap. Not sure what's feeding the line though.

I loved mid strength when it was available. Made it easier to have a pint, and then not worry about driving a while later.

I did get asked for a Guinness 0.0 with a regular top this week. Then again I'm regularly asked for a pint of special. Can confirm though that our 0.0 comes in keg form!

    What's a 'special'?

My regular at my regular is a mix of pale ale and red ale.

The original Guinness 0 taps were a contraption where you loaded a can into to tap.

They were a disaster though as you could only do 1 beer at a time due to the semi automated top up system and the machine having a habit of not reading the cans.

It was a way to get around having beer sitting for ages in quiet kegs and lines that almost immediately became a non issue due to the runaway popularity of the beer.

As for mid strength I worked in a Guinness heavy pub back then and their was an astonishing level of childish narrow mindedness towards it. We had to bin the glassware because people were afraid to been seen drinking it and full strength drinkers would refuse a beer in the glass because of the pathetic slagging that would occur.

Your comments about mid strength are really interesting. I definitely recall the sort of rubbish you mention there — people refusing to buy mid strength, if someone ordered it as part of a round, and a lot of slagging.

It seems like knowledge around the health impact of binge drinking and excess drinking has been more effectively disseminated than it was in the past. I don't think that's the only reason someone might be ordering non alcohol or mid strength type products, but I think it's a big factor.

The average punter has a fairly detailed sense of the link between drinking and obesity, liver damage, heart disease and poor sleep quality. In my 20s and 30s all those warnings just seemed to wash over people, but nowadays, if I mention it to friends, people seem to pipe up a lot more about what they've heard on such-and-such podcast… Peter Attia seems to be on the cusp of making it large, for example.

We are told again and again that younger generations are drinking less. Maybe another Guinness mid strength will come along eventually. But in the meantime, I think I might try this mix of 0.0 and regular and see what it's like.

It was just pure narrow minded insecure childishness.

The same people would laugh and snigger at the a customer for ordering Erdinger because it was "different" and came in a "flamboyant" glass.

It was nothing to do with the information out there now. It was purely cultural based peer pressure from the generation I was serving.

Macardles Ale, 568ml pint bottles, i was in the local shop last weekend and noticed they had them for sale, have not had it in years, 3 euro 25 a bottle.

i am a big ale fan, very pleasant and enjoyable few bottles i had to finish off the festivities.

i remember in the pubs years ago round my area, lads would drink them off the shelf, like the pint bottle of Guinness. I had mine chilled and the froth/head kept very well in the glass, will be purchasing again !

From next Sunday (Jan 26th) Aldi have two beers from Vienas Brewery, Lithiuania.

    • Wheat Beer 5.0% 568ml €2.49 (mup 2.24)
    • Red Dune 5.8% 568ml €2.69 (mup 2.60)

No idea what they are like, never seen them here. They get good enough reviews. Because of the size they have 25c deposit.
