Has Ward really emerged? There is a lot of noise about him and I watched him in the Olympics and definitely thought Ulster should look at him. But to go from there to a 3 year deal has really surprised me given he has played 2 games for the senior side. He's a big lad and is quick and obviously has pedigree.

Anyone seen him in the AIL this season? I take it he plays Hinch (just because his bro does and famously so did his da back in the 90s).

He must be 26 by now. Those of us with longer memories will remember Andy having to be subbed at half time in the European Q/F against Toulouse at Ravenhill to race to the hospital in time for him to be born. Ulster held out and of course eventually went on to win the cup. If Zac ever does make the big time with Ulster then that will be an even cooler story than it is already!

Wonder if the selection at 10 is rotation, or if Murphy's seen enough from Morgan. He seems a decent rugby player to me but not a good ten, although I don't think he's solely responsible for Ulster's lack of attacking shape.

I feel like I've seen him take a pass from 9 standing still, and pass to a pod to get tackled 10m behind the gainline 100 times this year.

Would jack be starting if he wasnt Richie's son?

    Awk come on!

I thought Jack did pretty well last week, also Richie needs to look at these guys on the pitch.

I don't expect much in way of a result (although our pack looks a bit stronger than it was last week) but I'm looking forward to seeing Murphy and Telfer and also De Klerk from the bench. Hopefully we will see Lukas Kenny get a run soon as well.

Well, it's becoming clear that it's a much more open field than previously thought. Flannery is just getting back from injury, Humphreys has looked more skilful than expected, Morgan hasn't looked hugely better at getting our backline going than anyone else. All to play for, for all of them.

As someone above said, Morgan looks like a talented footballer, but is the guy to run a backline, never mind a team? We really really dropped the ball not renewing Burns. He had his faults, but he was levels above what we have now.

I disagree. Genuinely excellent short kicking game, and overly maligned, but between Morgan, Humphreys and Murphy, I think we'll find a definite improvement within a season or two.

    McNabney playing really well.

What happened to Eric O? He's so poor scrimmaging. He would struggle to make the u20's

That isn't true and if you are going to make outlandish comments at least attempt to explain how you think that's the case

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭Dubinusa

Open ur eyes. Put on some goggles. He can't scrummage. Definitely the weak link in today's Ulsters pack.

In fairness for all the haters Carson has really done well this season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,142 ✭✭✭✭bilston

Good hard fought win tonight. Hopefully we are seeing the shape of a very competitive pack beginning to develop.

Interesting times ahead at 10 as well.

don’t think Carson has that many haters. He’s going to be a good player for ulster.

He’d be behind Moore and Hume if they were fit though.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 4,997 Mod ✭✭✭✭Lost Ormond

Are you capable of explaining anything? You just say he can't scrummage and go into no detail. You haven't a notion about the scrum.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,114 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

    There are no Carson haters.

Personally, I was sceptical about him at U20s, off the back of his performances, and didn't really understand why he was there. In his performances for the senior team, he has been powerful, fast and a good defender at 13.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,142 ✭✭✭✭bilston

I wasn't blown away by Carson at 20s level, not sure if that makes me a hater, but either way he has stepped up very well into the senior squad and I have absolutely no fears when I see him named in the team.

That said McCloskey and Postlethwaite is our best midfield, although that will change if Hume rediscovers his top form when he returns, but I think it will be next season before we see that to be honest and you just never know with ACLs, for example Stuart Olding pretty much had the world at his feet before his first ACL tear, he could have gone to the very very top IMO, but on his return he had lost some of his explosiveness and wasn't quite the same never mind what happened next.

Elsewhere it was Interesting to hear Ferris name checking Bryn Ward in a big way on TV tonight. He seems to think he will be a top player for us. Fingers crossed. Hopefully he gets run before the end of the season if the opportunity arises.

A mate was talking to Bryn Cunningham about Zac Ward a week or so ago.

It wasn't long before Bryn C started raving about what Bryn W would do for the team rather than Zac.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭Dubinusa

Watch his effort? Bealhham dominated him. You just have watch .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,413 ✭✭✭Locke_Lamora

As others have said, I never rated him off his u20 performances - seemed too one dimensional without the size/power to back up the style he played with at age-grade level. Didn't think it would translate but I remember there was an article about a very serious illness he was dealing with (possibly considering retirement iirc) which put things in a bit more context. Very pleased so far.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,413 ✭✭✭Locke_Lamora

Another powerful backrower would do just nicely, he has looked good whenever I've seen him for Hinch and he outperformed more reputable u20 players for Ireland imo. I wonder if Ulster see him as an openside like the u20 coaches did (might have been Murphy at the time, not sure), but I would question if he has the speed for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 69 ✭✭big-al

he was a machine at u20 level. Just bouncing off young fellas when ball carrying.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 4,997 Mod ✭✭✭✭Lost Ormond

So that's a no. If it's that easy then explain how. You do this all the time and never actually say how a situation. Is or went. You just say watch the game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭Dubinusa

If you think EOS can scrum, I recommend an optician. Your eyes deceive you. A senile blind giraffe watching the scrums yesterday and counting the penalties against Ulsters with EOS collapsing constantly, would see a poor scrummage. But, not you.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 4,997 Mod ✭✭✭✭Lost Ormond

As usual with you you offer no proof nothing to back up any of your rants. And I've seen hi. Play a lot from AIl with Trinity and up. Key part of trinity doing very well for years with very good scrum inspire of beig university side in all. He is a good scrummager and 1 game means f all. You clearly can't grasp that based on your ill-informed rants

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭Dubinusa

Lol. You are the scrum guru? Your talking outta it hole. Playing for Trinity is not exactly inspiring. I bet Ulsters fans for the most part, don't rate him.

I understand the scrum. You clearly don't as you have yet again deflected. Answer how you think he can't scrummage and don't say just "look at previous games"

You do this all the time. you say something and when someone asks you to explain why you think that way. You just say look at previous games as if that backs up what you say.
