The Ulster Rugby Performance Medicine Team have issued a squad update ahead of the province's BKT United Rugby Championship Round 7 fixture v Leinster Rugby this Friday.

Zac Ward sustained a concussion playing for the Ulster 'A' team against Connacht Eagles last Friday.

He will now follow the World Rugby Graduated Return to play protocols and is unavailable for selection this week.

Ben Moxham (hamstring) was injured in the same game and his fitness for selection will be monitored during training ahead of the fixture against Leinster this Friday.

Other players currently unavailable for selection are: Robert Baloucoune (calf), Jake Flannery (ankle), James Hume (knee), Callum Reid (knee), Ethan McIlroy (ankle), Sean Reffell (ankle), Jacob Stockdale (hamstring).

Tom Stewart (ankle) and Stewart Moore (sterno-clavicular joint) have both reintegrated into full team training following their recent injuries and are available for selection.

Nick Timoney has been released from Ireland duty and is also available for selection.

Fairly thin on the backs. Moore in @ 15, Lowry and Kok on the wings, Postlethwaite and Carson in centre.

Or Lowry @ 15, Sexton on wing (or Ward if he's recovered), and Moore and Postlethwaite at centre.

Surely that is Ulster's bread and butter 😁

In all seriousness though, it's a decent signing. I would rather see them beef up their front 5 though. As long as they don't waste any more money on the outside backs.

He looks the part alright, sounds like he has had a few injuries though and clearly we need strengthened in one or two positions before No.8. That said he does seem a good player and is also a good age as well.

I'm going to get crucified for this but I really don't have IZZY down as starting in a back row of Timoney & Augustus. The potential is there but like Timoney I just haven't seen the consistency and still think he's suited to bench play currently. Maybe my expectations of a blindside are outdated.

I wonder will we also see Timoney lose some bulk and return to a more open side role.

regardless with our options a 6/2 split becomes more and more appealing. Just get us some fat meat eating saffer 2nd row now.

Not really much of a shock to see him go, great athlete but never seemed to have the rugby brain required for the pro game.

    Ffs. Get Lyttle back, pronto.

Game didn't come naturally to him at all, even in the 'A' games I saw he looked a little lost. Hope it goes well for him but although the NFL sometimes allows for pure athletes to thrive better than in rugby, it often requires quicker game-processing.

When fit he was an excellent player, and one of the best try-finishers we've produced.

Any word on any of the Academy wings making the step up?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,114 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

I had an awful lot of time for him. Great player and only jacked it in because he couldn't be bothered dealing with McFarland any more.

    Ulster 'A' v Munster 'A', Friday 29th November, 3pm, Nenagh Ormond RFC, IRFU 150 'A' Interprovincial Championship

    (15-9) Ben McFarlane, Lukas Kenny, Wilhelm De Klerk, Cal Florence, Joshua Gibson(u19), Jack Murphy, Michael McDonald;

(1-8) Jacob Boyd, Zac Solomon, Cameron Doak, Joe Hopes, Charlie Irvine, Tom Brigg, Reuben Crothers (C), Lorcan McLoughlin

Replacements: Henry Walker(u20), Jack Boal, Flynn Longstaff, James McKillop, Matthew Dalton, Bryn Ward, Dave Shanahan, Dan Green(u19), Clarke Logan(u20), Jonny Scott(u20)

Matthew Dalton back? Pretty callow team. Lukas Kenny might find himself steered towards the senior team sooner rather than later given the rate at which we're losing wingers.

Isn't he only just back from a long-term injury?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,114 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

Yeah - out for a year. He is a serious operator though, and given we're losing Sexton, and Stockdale, Baloucoune, McIlroy and Moxham are out…

Ulster v Leinster, Friday 29th November, 7.35pm, Kingspan Stadium, BKT United Rugby Championship, Round 7 (Live on BBC Sport NI, Premier Sports, RTE Player, URC.tv)

    (15-9) Stewart Moore, Werner Kok, Ben Carson, Jude Postlethwaite, Michael Lowry, Aidan Morgan, Nathan Doak;

(1-8) Eric O'Sullivan, James McCormick, Scott Wilson, Alan O'Connor (C), Kieran Treadwell, James McNabney, Nick Timoney, David McCann.

    Replacements:

16 Tom Stewart, 17 Andrew Warwick, 18 Corrie Barrett, 19 Harry Sheridan, 20 Marcus Rea, 21 John Cooney, 22 James Humphreys, 23 Ben Moxham.

Interesting to see Doak start ahead of Cooney - presumably so that we can have a bit of a push off the bench with him, Stewart and Sheridan.

Glad to see Humphreys trusted rather than Doak/Lowry moving to 10.

Isn't Lukas Kenny higly rated? Had a bad injury though last season which was his first year out of school so no doubt that will have set him back. Josh Gibson was pretty talented at schools level played Ireland U18s in the spring so might be one to watch.

There are probably others who are more clued in who can comment. But it seems like we've done a bit of a 180 from the days when we produced lots of backs and no forwards!

The Ireland u18 training squad that was announced recently had a fair few Ulster forwards as well

TMO picks up that head on head but misses Jack Conan nailing Moore in the head earlier. 🙄

  • Administrators Posts: 55,703 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

we are still a bit soft and a bit stupid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,538 ✭✭✭launish116

    Ulster really are soft

Is Soper in charge of the attack? Ulster have no shape whatsoever in phase play, very reliant on close range tries.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,786 ✭✭✭FtD v2

Tight 5 just looks an obvious area of weakness for Ulster. Thought the Timoney yellow (and especially the timing of it) was a big factor.

Impressed with those two young centres, both look like nice players. Would be intrigued to see a bit more of James Humphreys too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,142 ✭✭✭✭bilston

He scored two tries yesterday for the As. With Moxham sadly looking like a long term injury plus all the other injuries he might well get a shot sooner rather than later.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 106 ✭✭lonester99

Lukas Kenny looks a physicality level above a lot of his peers in both backlines the other day, injury free run hopefully and Ulster look like they have a player

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,142 ✭✭✭✭bilston

That's the key isn't it. Physicality. Doesn't matter how talented you are, you need that extra toughness. Hopefully he has it and we can look forward to seeing him get a shot soon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 106 ✭✭lonester99

yep and hes got it both sides of the ball, mixed nicely with him being a gifted athlete its the perfect combination

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,413 ✭✭✭Locke_Lamora

Exactly. Look at Louis Bielle-Biarry for France and Kolbe for SA - yes they have speed in abundance, however they are small and slight but it doesn't matter because the physical side of the game doesn't phase them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,538 ✭✭✭launish116

Ulster need to take a look at Northampton Saints last season. They identified they were smaller and getting out muscled. They structured off season, training, conditioning to gain athletic weight/size. 1-3kg on average I think I heard. Outcome an Aviva Premiership title.

Even looking at the Leinster pups last night the size/composition of players was on a different level.

Kenny was super for the A’s v Munster. Real impact on the game.

Munster A 7 was good also whoever he was.

Moxham out for a while - undergoing surgery. Cooney out with hamstring injury.

Ireland players back and available (presumably not Stockdale).
