Absolute embarrassment after the that first half performance! to come out and just not play.

Still trying to figure out Richie's game plan for Ulster. If being mentally and physically weak is it, he's nailed it

To be fair the first half was u20ish, nice attack open play. Second half was dan defend era!

Young players showing up senior lads!

We desperately need a 10. Morgan hasn't shown anything yet. Just ships the ball on.

We have 4x young 10s on the books. Need to give a chance to the others

Total complacency at the start of the second half combined with a motivated Cardiff side (who are a lot better than the 1st half suggested) led to moments where Ulster let Cardiff back in, once Cardiff got a sniff Ulster fell apart. Even then we should have won. Sheridan should have scored to make it 24/26 7 and that would have been the game.

Really frustrating, but I would temper the emotion by saying that many said at the start of the season that with a young squad we'd have bad moments and be inconcsistent and the second half last night was just that.

The first half was probably a good example of what he is trying to do. Maybe less structured than what we've seen before.

We know how momentum works in Rugby, that's why you can never be complacent, expecially away from home and that would be my biggest criticism of last night in the second half.

What I'd give for someone like Josh McNally in the 2nd row, nothing flashy just solid, hard hitting!

Folks, we've dropped to second in the "basket case" rankings. Not impressed.

This has been incredible timing for us. I’ve had a very pleasant week, haven’t had to think about Ulster at all and no game at the weekend to piss me off all over again.

Think you may have hit a nerve Paul...lol

I have literally no idea what the hell happened. Is one of those posters Mrs Byrne?

It's not like Ulster haven't had our own share of young talent we've misjudged. Everyone across the whole island does it - if people think I'm too cynical, that's fine, everyone has an opinion. But parts of this forum are disappearing up their own behinds with meta-narratives and endless waves of paranoia about a simple post.

Two year extension for Stewart Moore - he hasn't quite kicked on to where I thought he'd be, but a brilliant squad player. Good business.

And a year extension for Rob Herring.

Also, Zac Ward won Men's 7s Player of the Year and Ballyclare won Club of the Year at last night's Guinness Rugby Writers of Ireland Awards

Presumably Herring will just retire after that contract.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,114 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

Seems likely, especially given how well McCormick has gone.

If/when Rob gets one more Ireland cap, that will be the same number as Jerry Flannery.

My mistake - he already has one more than Flannery.

Two years for Hendo on a provincial deal.

Interesting to see photos of the squad training with Banbridge. Second row Matthew Dalton seems to have returned to Ulster. Hadn’t heard any reports about it

    Whatever happened to Flannery!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,782 ✭✭✭FtD v2

Good player but a fairly unusual signing IMO. He's spent almost his whole career playing at 8, but would have thought Ulster's first choice back row was relatively settled with Izuchukwu, McCann & Timoney, and then really good younger players coming through like McLoughlin, McNabney, Crothers, Reffell.

Wouldn't have seen it as an area of need directly for Ulster.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,538 ✭✭✭launish116

Was thinking the same actually, when I saw the rear pic on twitter thought it was Salmaan Moerat from Stormers.

A big heavy second row would make a hell of a difference.

Augustus is injured the whole time. Hope they're not paying too much for him.

Surely Ulster aren't in a position to offer a long contract to an injury-prone South African.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,413 ✭✭✭Locke_Lamora

We need size in the pack that’s for sure, a big second row to improve our scrums would’ve been my choice but with the IRFU banning front row signings I’ll take what we can get. McCann and Timoney are great players but neither dominate collisions imo.

Can’t say I’ve watched too much of Northampton but the fans seems to be very disappointed so I’m optimistic enough.

Back row depth and bench impact improves, Timoney to up his game another gear!

A welcome surprise. We haven't had a Nick Williams/Coetzee style of player in a while, and I would assume Izzy is in and around the Ireland squad from here on in. A first choice back row of Izzy - McCann - Augustus and Timoney on the bench is a vast improvement on a few seasons ago.

Slightly disappointed for Reffell/Crothers/McNabney but I'm sure they'll still get their chances.
