Not sure I'd be this critical, but that said we did lose our shape on occasions, maybe Morgan is still getting used to the system.

The pack seem aot more cohesive. I like McCormick, he really does the basics well. Lowry and obviously Stockdale were very good and Carson impressed again.

Still, a really top team might have been expected to rack 50 or 60 tonight, but then we are a young team trying to become a top team so overall happy enough. Another 5 points and if we can back it up next week with a win in Cardiff then it will have been a really positive first block of the season.

I've only really seen highlights of Ulster this season, but is Morgan's passing a bit laboured? I'd expect a bit slicker at this level.

Is Humphrey's tackling any better than David's and Ian's?

Henderson, McIlroy and Reffell being monitored to see if they can be fit for Cardiff.

In other news, what Ulster names do we expect to be in the wider Ireland squad tomorrow?

For me, it's Izzy, Stockdale, McCloskey, O'Toole - I'm honestly not sure about Hendo. Quite possibly Timoney, albeit I think McCann has been better over the last year, and deserves it. Would love to see Wilson called up to see how the camp works.

Stockdale is probably the form wing at the moment and although many think his time has past, our wing depth is poor at the moment so I’d be surprised not to see him in a wider squad.

Izzy keeps improving and the coaches were obviously keen on him given he traveled for the SA series. You can tell by the effort he gives across the pitch and the way he’s hitting players on the gain line that he’s pushing himself and probably senses that caps are there for the taking.

I’m doubtful Wilson gets called up, probably too soon for him even as ‘development player’ - surely Aungier is the next man up?

McCann has been great but it’s a competitive position. Mind you if he does manage a call up ahead of Hodnett the mods should ban me immediately because my victory laps will be unbearable.

Izuchukwu has surely leapfrogged the likes of Baird, but we've seen in the past that form doesn't always mean you're going to get picked.

McCann is definitely the next cab off the rank in his position but whether or not that translates to a call up remains to be seen.

I think McCann has out-performed Timoney, Hodnett, Kendellan, Penny etc but Farrell has so far shown no interest. It is a ferociously competitive area, though, back-row.

McCann deserves a call up, but I'm not holding my breath.

Herring (if fit), O'Toole, Henderson, Izuchwukwu, McCloskey and Stockdale is probably our lot.

Form wise I'll throw Lowry's name out there as an unlikely wildcard.

I'm not 100% on Hendo at this stage, to be honest.

BBC now reporting that all three I mentioned should be available.

So O'Toole, Herring, Henderson, Izuchwukwu, Timoney, McCloskey and Stockdale make the cut for Ireland. Nothing too surprising. Izzy will hopefully make his debut and Stockdale should get one or two caps. If Herring is fit he'll be in the 23, although he has a lack of gametime behind him which isn't ideal.

I didn't think McCann would make the squad because he plays in a stacked position, but I wonder if McCann will ever make it or what is it that he has to do to get ahead of Prendergast (I'm a big fan in fairness). Even Alex Kendellan is getting recognition as well while McCann will be kicking his heels over the next few weeks. Is McCann going to be Ulster's Jack O'Donoghue?

That would be a real shame - he's already better than JO'D. He might get a chance during the Lions summer, when Ireland are playing some Tier 2 nations.

Cardiff v Ulster, Saturday 26 October, 7.35pm, Cardiff Arms Park, BKT United Rugby Championship Round 6 (Live on Premier Sports, URC.tv)

    (1-8) Eric O’Sullivan, James McCormick, Tom O’Toole, Iain Henderson (C), Kieran Treadwell, Cormac Izuchukwu, Nick Timoney, David McCann;

(15-9) Ethan McIlroy, Werner Kok, Jude Postlethwaite, Stuart McCloskey, Mike Lowry, Aidan Morgan, Nathan Doak.

Replacements: John Andrew, Andrew Warwick, Scott Wilson, Harry Sheridan, Marcus Rea, John Cooney, Ben Carson, Ben Moxham.

Interesting that McCann stays at Number eight while Timoney shifts to blindside. Nick is quite possibly first choice cover for Van Der Flier in November, so I wonder if that's what that's about. That must be a first choice back row in terms of personnel.

Start for Doak - hopefully he brings the energy and speed he had off the bench against the Ospreys. Wasn't sure Postlethwaite has played 13 in a while, but that's a strong centre partnership. Sheridan must be on the bench for impact - at this point, he's been outperforming Treadwell for a while. Glad to see Wilson and Carson there as well.

Can’t really complain about that side.

I don’t know what to do with myself when I can’t complain. Not used to it.

In fairness to Carson for all his doubters, he's been good considering his limited senior experience.

James McCormick setting a good baseline for young players also, injuries have helped his exposure. But can't fault him so far. Has he leap frogged Andrew?

Strong back row, if McNabey was fit, who benches?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,114 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

I, for one, was sceptical about Carson - I didn't see at all why he merited a place in the U20s. Ironically, he has been mush more impressive for the senior team, stepping up and delivering strong, physical performances, in no way overwhelmed. I've also been impressed with what I've seen from Humphreys.

It looks to me like McCormick has leapfrogged Andrew. Andrew's nuts and bolts are very dependable, so he's a very safe bench option. And if McNabney was fit, he's on the bench - he's promising but nowhere near our three best back rows.

The fact that McNabney was playing for Armagh last week probably answers your question.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,538 ✭✭✭launish116

Oh thought he was maybe quietly injured, looked a little beaten up in South Africa. Little harsh on him though thought he has gone well so far this season. Offering the hard yards.

I just feel he offers more starting with the explosiveness of Izzy from the bench.

    Is Reuben Crothers injured again?
