Axal Pro is the best. I have tried other brands, but Axal Pro is the best quality.

What differences do you see between the different brands? Why do you say it is the best?

Can't say I noticed a difference in the output of the softened water itself but with the cheaper ones the water in the tank gets dirty and scum on the water. Started with Hydrosoft and that worked well but became hard to source so went for a bag from Grange (cant recall brand) and had to eventually empty the tank completely to clean out the dirt and scum. Have been using Axal Pro from Whites Agri for the last couple of years - lasts a while with a completely clear tank.

Not that you mention it there is a bit of a brownish scum on the top of the water in the tank…

I use AXAL PRO salt which is a high end one. Never had any issues with it.

I heard that the SALT based Water Softners can cause skin irritations, rashes in some people due to the high sodium content in it. Not sure whether this is correct.

There should not be that much salt left in the water to cause irritation.
It's only used to wash out the resin vessel and that is flushed out and then also rinsed.

In relation to the tablets the installer I used said the salt fragments are terrible and leave a lot of residue in the bottom of the salt tank and he has to always clean them out, compared to the salt pellets.

I'm using the "Meinsalz" stuff and have had no problems - 8.99 in local filling station in Ballymahon (Longford) for 25Kg bag

Both Myself and one of my sons have sensitive skin and no issues with a softener installed since 2021

Thanks for confirming that. I was worried about probable issues to skin because of the use of water softner.

Just to the poster above worried about skin

my wife had terribly sensitive skin for years and getting a softener fixed it

Quite the opposite of making it worse

Still 9.50 a bag in Cavan so it is.

Exact reason why I got a softener, it has made a huge difference to my skin. Used to also come out in dermititis rashes, but since getting a softener and using non bio washing gel, my skin has more or less gotten 90% better. Huge difference for me and hopefully for everyone else

Somewhat off topic, but what are people's thoughts on getting the water softener system serviced?

What system do you have and what would you typically pay for a service?

We have a Clack system (with a separate reverse osmosis system), and have been quoted E250 for a service in the past, the company we used are terrible to deal with - we stuck with them as there was a free service initially but in all honestly it looked like they just stuck their head under the sink for 10-15 mins.

Is it something you can do yourself, I can see for the osmosis system you can purchase replacement filters, which looks straight forward enough, but what about the water softener itself - what maintenance does that require?

    Thanks.

If it is just filter change for drinking water system you can remove the current filters and and replace it with a new one. It is simple.

But if you have a water softner system I think the system needs to be calibrated.
