    Villa. Take a bow.

    Great result for Villa....fair play.

Worrying times for Bayern and Madrid. Lose another four games and they might not make the next round.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,233 ✭✭✭jacool

The OPTA prediction machine, that did some 10000 combinations, didn't have either losing any games!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,221 ✭✭✭circadian

Just looking at the fixtures and Dortmond are definitely topping the league stage. They have Real Madrid who in all honesty, don't look amazing at the back. Everything else is fairly easy.

Anyone else find the first two round to be a bit meh? Hopefully it picks up. The knockouts will obviously take care of themselves.

Is there too many teams? Would a reduced competition for the Champions League/Europa League be better?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,789 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

The whole point is more games, more games = more money. Precursor to the European League in effect, build up a routine with more games.

He doesn't hold back does he. I'm on the fence with this new format. It's too early to make judgement I think I'll wait until the end of the monstrous group stage to decide. One thing I don't like is the 9-24 teams having to play 2 extra games to get to the last 16. The counter to that I suppose it rewards teams who do better in the group stage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,204 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Worse is that there just isn't 24 teams good enough to bother with that round. There wasn't even 16 good teams a lot of the time.

24 teams, 6 Groups of 4, no more than 3 teams from one country. Trims down the dross a bit. The 6 3rd placed teams are competing against each other as well as those in their group, forcing teams to really go out and win.

Do the same with the Europa League. Improve the quality there too, make it more worth winning.

Expand the Conference League to 12 groups of 4 (8 of the 12 3rd place teams to qualify for the last 32) to compensate for squeezing the top competitions.

In an ideal world, that's be the European competition format.

I thought there would have been a few posts here for the Real game on Virgin 2. Some lovely football so far from Real. Passes that cut the midfield out of it. Going to be a good game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,130 ✭✭✭✭Osmosis Jones

Dortmund are cutting Madrid apart, 2-0!

Still get the impression it could be 2-2 in an instant.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,221 ✭✭✭fyfe79

What a mad last 10 mins!

Unbelievable sequence there nearly ending in a great OG

Ray Hudson on commentary here genuinely doesn't seem to know the whole ball has to cross the whole line, he's baffled

Expected wasn't it. A team that just doesn't give up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,130 ✭✭✭✭Osmosis Jones

Dortmund had a huge chance to win it and now it's 3-2 Madrid

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,039 ✭✭✭BenK

Vinicius is class. Poor Emre Can hadn't a prayer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,782 ✭✭✭Damien360

    Stunning goal by Vinicius

    Dortmund total implosion

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,990 ✭✭✭extra-ordinary_

They never came out ready for a second half and then keep giving the ball away, what do they expect.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,934 ✭✭✭CalamariFritti

Can't help but thinking Nuri Sahin messed this one up. It was always going to be a tough 2nd half but Gittens/Anton was a chicken move in the 55th minute IMO. It completely gave Madrid the initiative. The second mistake was Ryerson/Can. Yes Ryerson was up against it but who wouldnt be? Can has no chance against Vini. I think the Dortmund manager fkd this one up.

Wow! Some player in fairness. The athleticism in the 90th minute is unreal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,732 ✭✭✭ollaetta

Desperate tactics and subs by Sahin killed them. Taking a dangerous forward off on 55 mins and going 5 at the back was just crazy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,039 ✭✭✭BenK

Mad to think Carlo was ever Everton manager.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,681 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Now that was a game of football!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,233 ✭✭✭jacool

A coupon buster (for me anyway!!) in Italy, as Celtic manage to get a 0-0 from this game.

Retegui (4 goals in last 2) was hauled off at half-time, even though it was Pasilic who missed 4 big chances in that half.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,211 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

The name on the back of City's jerseys looks like it was drawn on by a 10 year old, wtf.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,204 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Probably designed by the same guy who came up with all those hard to read fake sponsors

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,075 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

I am enjoying these early big gun clashes. Real v Dortmund was great yesterday, Barca v Bayern shaping up nicely as Barca go 2-1

As a more casual CL watcher these draw me in. Normally would have to wait QF for this.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,681 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

    Yeah agree.

    Last night's game was amazing.

This one excellent too, 2 top sides.

Not many teams at the real top level in Europe, but that's 4 of them.

Yamal is bloody special. I know we know thay already but that pass to raphinha was stupidly good. And fair play to raphinha, he had a lot to do and he did it well. Great goal

That peno award to Lille has to be the worst I've seen, and that's says something!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,495 ✭✭✭chalkitdown1

I bloody hate that RTE will ALWAYS show a Liverpool game even on a night with far better ties happening.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,133 ✭✭✭hawaii501

There is literally 1 game you'd pick ahead and it's been shown on virgin media anyway?

It's actually been a good game as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,221 ✭✭✭fyfe79

All about numbers. I'd be shocked if VM2 has higher ratings than RTE tonight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,951 ✭✭✭Ottoman_1000

1st place in the EPL vs 1st in Germany is hardly a horrible tie...

Shít! I didn't even check VM. I thought only RTE showed games on Tuesdays lol

It's all about viewing figures, and if UTD or Liverpool are playing in Europe they will be shown. You can't argue with the bottom line.

I'm fairly certain that the Milan v Liverpool game was not shown live on Irish TV. Real Madrid v Stuttgart was shown instead.

Irish TV has actually been a lot better in recent years of not showing dead rubber games as their main game and instead will show a more attractive neutral game. Virgin Media usually put on the English club on their secondary channel in those situations. RTE don't.
