Don't feel too forlorn about that, in all honesty. McNabney and Carson worked really hard and were physical - Carson looked better against the Bulls at altitude than I ever thought he did for the U20s. Humphreys has a nice pass and his hanging kick to allow us to reclaim the final restart was excellent. Irvine is a big lad. Stockdale maybe getting some confidence back? McCormick didn't look out of place, although he does seem small? Tough watch at times but there were definitely some positives there from our youngsters.

Yep the young lads stood up well all told. I was impressed by Carson in particular.

The fact is if we had a competitive scrum it would have been a lot closer. Unfortunately this isn't going to improve much unless we somehow bring someone in. Wilson might help, and Herring should help as much as a hooker can. But it's a real problem. Otherwise we weren't terrible.

One thing that bothers me...sin binning props who are under pressure at the scrum...why? If they are doing something to gain an advantage then fair enough, but if they are dropping their bind because they physically can't stand up to what they are facing then what's the rationale for sin binning them? To be fair Whitehouse was slow to sin bin Barrett today, probably because he realised there was sod all either him or Warwick could do.

I think it's under the "one player giving away multiple penalties" rule. Nothing specific to the scrum.

Going to be a long season scrum wise.

That game could of been a lot closer, few errors and lost line outs made a big difference at key times + throw in Bulls had the rub of the green for most decisions.

We definitely have the making of a pack growing (props excluded, though I think barren will improve) McNabey was very good today as well. If Irvine can put a bit more timber on, between him and Hopes could be handy enough. Imagine when we have a full deck, chosing a back row is going to be hard.

Realistically the squad does appear to going in the right direction - minus a few positions.

Back row for me is Izzy, McCann and Timoney with Reffel and McNabney on the bench (Izzy providing second row cover). Hendy and Sheridan in the row. Herring at hooker. No idea who starts at prop!

Cooney at 9 with Morgan at 10 (although Humphreys's cameo today was definitely interesting), McCloskey and a fit Hume in the midfield (Moore until Hume returns), Stockdale at 11, McIlroy at 15 and I'm torn between Lowry and Kok at 14.

It’s a nice dilemma for once having competition in the back row.

I do think McNabey is more suited to starting and Izzy’s explosiveness off the bench.

Hopefully Crothers, Hopes and McLoughlin get some exposure also.

    Forgotten about Baloucoune already, Bilston?

Glad to have Postlethwaite back although, in all honesty, Carson was a pleasant surprise at the weekend. The player we need back most is Wilson, however.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,142 ✭✭✭✭bilston

And Wilson has hardly fecking played in SA. Total waste.

Ulster Rugby v Connacht Rugby, Saturday 12th October, 8pm, Kingspan Stadium (Live on BBC Two, BBC iPlayer, BBC Sounds, Premier Sports and TG4)

    (1-8) Andrew Warwick, John Andrew, Tom O’Toole, Iain Henderson (C), Kieran Treadwell, David McCann, Sean Reffell, Nick Timoney;

(15-9) Ethan McIlroy, Werner Kok, Stewart Moore, Jude Postlethwaite, Jacob Stockdale, Aidan Morgan, John Cooney

Replacements: James McCormick, Callum Reid, Corrie Barrett, Alan O’Connor, Marcus Rea, Nathan Doak, Ben Carson, Mike Lowry.

Emerging Ireland forwards could of made a big difference

Very frustrating to be missing Wilson, Sherry and Izzy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,142 ✭✭✭✭bilston

McNabney must be injured, because with no McCloskey or Izzy we are short of big atheltic ball carriers. Hendy, McCann and Timoney can obviously do a job but the other have pace and power, the three above are more one or the other IMO.

Jude will need a big big game against Bundee and will have to get go forward, I wonder if we will see Kok coming off his wing to attack the Connacht midfield.

It's a strong Connacht team as well.

Stockdale pushing his coach's son's face into the ground is certainly a choice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,788 ✭✭✭FtD v2

Andy Brace did everything for them down there in the corner except kick the conversion there.

Joke of a decision - just decided he’d seen Mack instigate it, rather than using the TMO to actually check.

The thread being dead after an inter pro win speaks volumes but a win is a win. Next step..world domination

    Brace was awful tonight.

In the first half Connacht were defending their line and he called that the ball was out, so Connacht rushed in to secure the ball which he subsequently pinged them for. Bizarre.

He called a try for Connacht that he said he saw grounded, only to say he was blocked off when the TMO made it clear it wasn't even close to being grounded.

The Mack Hansen thing was clearly instigated by Stockdale.

Was at the game and have not watched it back, but can someone tell me if the tackle on Hendy that forced him off for a HIA was looked at by the TMO? It looked high on the one replay I saw on the big screen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,538 ✭✭✭launish116

No replay on TV or didn’t appear to be reviewed. Actually thought he was concussed earlier in the game also.

That game could have been a hell of a lot more convincing with McNabey, Izzy, Sheridan, Wilson & McCluskey.

Another get out of jail game! Shame Murphy couldn’t get his other son over to play 9.

The positive thing is we won without those players you listed and obviously Henderson for most of the game, Postlethwaite went down half way through as well (Herring, Stewart, Hume and Balacoune still missing too), so I definitely think we're on the right path, I just wish we had a stronger scrum, although last night seemed better. It could be an interesting season where really a top 8 finish and Champions Cup need to be the priority, but if these young guys continue to develop and we manage to find a few quid from somewhere and permission from David Humphreys to sign a prop, then next season could be where we start to contend again. But for now patience is required.

So Henderson and Moore definitely out for Friday.

McCloskey, Postlethwaite and McIlroy to be monitored during the week.

    Eric O'Sullivan might be back.

Still no Herring, Stewart, Flannery, Baloucoune, Hume.

Well be in serious trouble if neither of McCloskey or Postlethwaite make it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,142 ✭✭✭✭bilston

Might mean Kok in the centre, or possibly a run for one of the two new Academy recruits like Berman.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,114 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

According to the42, Stewart won't be back until December/Christmas.

    Ospreys absolute gutted by injury

    From the Beeb:

The players missing include Rhys Henry, Dewi Lake, Tom Botha, Huw Sutton, Rhys Davies, Adam Beard, James Fender, James Ratti, Will Griffiths, Harri Deaves, Trystan Davies, Morgan Morse, Jac Morgan, Ryan Conbeer, Keiran Williams, Owen Watkin, Phil Cokanasiga and Iestyn Hopkins.

The major injury concern comes at lock with six players absent, while back row and centre positions are also presenting problems.

It means Booth will have to field players out of position and rely on feeder teams in the Super Rygbi Cymru (SRC).

Depending on who we have available, I wonder if giving James Humphreys some game time might be smart? Maybe rest some players?

Very glad to see Izzy and Sherry back. Timoney obviously being rested. Interesting that Rea Sr is on the bench rather than McNabney, Crothers or even McLoughlin. If we manage to get four tries, get Morgan off and let Humphreys have a crack.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,538 ✭✭✭launish116

Was thinking the same Re. Rea Snr. a Case of getting senior player game time? though wouldn't of minded seeing McLoughlin or some other academy player. Bag the 5 points and maximise exposure.

Would Humphries be ahead of Murphy's son?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,114 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

Yeah - Murphy is just joining the Academy and Humphreys is on either a development or senior deal.

Very good from ulster but ospreys are muck

24-7 up but we look poor.

Can't figure out what game plan Murphy is trying to implement this season.

Humphreys has a lovely wristy pass to be fair.
