I have used both, originally the green Eco Glow green bag for years and later the red Eco Stove stove bag when it first became available. In our Stanley Erin stove, the Eco Glow produces more flames particularly during the first hour of the coal being fully lit. I bought a pallet of the red Eco Stove coal from Smokeless Direct two years ago (now Smokeless Coal Express) and they delivered in 2 days.

The Eco Stove coal produces some flames during the first 30 minutes and then mainly glows red. It requires a stronger air flow underneath to burn hot, which explains why this is unsuitable for burning in an open fire. Some stoves do not burn this coal properly either, i.e. burns too slowly producing little heat, so I recommend getting hold of a bag if you can to try before buying a pallet of it. When I originally bought it from the local coal delivery when they first carried it, they suggested I just buy one bag to try as they had some customers who loved it and others who had bags exchanged. The main advantage over the green coal is that it produces less soot and does not smoke up the glass as much as the Eco Glow based on our stove.

I recently bought a pallet of Superheat Smokeless from ClickCoal, which also came pretty quick - ordered Sunday evening and delivered on Tuesday. The €450 price includes delivery. I have yet to try this coal, but heard good feedback about it so thought I'll try it this year. The Superheat Smokeless coal contains Calco so is not recommended with Stoves still under warranty as most manufacturers state not to burn this coal in their user manual. As our stove is about 15 years old, I figured in the worst case scenario that it burns through the grate, it would still work out good value even with the cost of a replacement grate. The main issues I heard with Calco (Petroleum Coke) burning through crates come from prior to the low sulphur laws as Petroleum Coke used to have very high sulphur content which when when mixed with water vapour (e.g. from kindling to light the coal) would produce sulphuric acid that would condense on the cool grate, which was likely the culprit for burning through the grate.

Thank you for the detailed response . Appreciate it. I was kinda under the impression the red bags would burn longer as stated on their website .

Maybe I’ll just stick the the Ovoids which are cheaper and there doesn’t seem to be any added benefit bar the glass been a bit cleaner . Thank you again though.

The burn time is a little longer with the Eco Stove coal mainly due to it producing a steady heat, whereas Eco Glow burns hotter in the first hour due to the additional heat from the flames during the first hour. For overall heat energy such as heating radiators and hot water (our stove has a back boiler), I reckon both are about equal, again with Eco Glow getting them at their hottest during the first hour and Eco Stove maintaining a more stable temperature during its burn time.

thanks for this, has anyone ever bought from them? Worth the trip up? Between coal and booze, surely a saving to be made if the coal is decent!

As promised. Good coal at least nothing major to complain about apart from that it seems a bit wet, top of first bag (which would have been on the bottom of the pallet) was definitely wet and as I went down the bag the coal just seemed and feeled damp. So I suspect it was packed damp and the wet on the top that I saw was condensation on the bag which is to all intents and purposes waterproof. The pallet arrived double wrapped, film and then a huge black bag over the top so the bags didn't get wet in transit.

Just lit a fire with it now, from a start with plenty of wood it lights easily with plenty of smoke but that soon settles down to a good flame. Seems good to keep going over night still glowing embers in the morning. Not a huge amount of ash no clinker.

Burning in a range so no idea how it clean it burns in a glass fronted stove.

Usual delivery curb side delivery (ordered Sunday arrived Thursday) with the same company that everyone else seems to use as its been the same driver with several different suppliers.

Wake me up when it's all over.

For anyone who doesn't have access to wood as tinder. Aldi Burn & Glow firelighters work well with Eco Stove (red bags) & they are pretty cheap.

click coal is doing Colombian coal for €610 a ton including delivery.

You could also look at CB Fuels websites.

On coal warehouses FB they did say a few weeks go that there delivery company would no longer delivery house coal to south. Smokeless coal is ok.

So you could ring them to see if they found a delivery company who will delivery house coal to the south if Ireland

You could also look on FB I just used the search function and found a few coal sell based in the south of Ireland

Has anyone had dealings with Maguire fuels €430 for ovides or is Coal warehouse a safer bet. I haven’t dealt with either. Went with Greers last year.

Been living in Strabane for a few years and been buying my coal from these lads.

They’re top class. The ovoids are McLaughlins eco glow (40kg green bags) or Coyles coal GloTherm (40kg bag).

Good size yard and the bags are always dry.

They once sourced and got McLaughins Esse nuts for me at £28 a bag (40kg) which is a decent price for grade A anthracite.

I use mcLaughlins eco glow (along with esse) as I find it burns slightly longer with less ash than Coyles glotherm.

Only downside to Wrays is they don’t deliver.

Thankfully Im local so plan on picking up 25 bags this weekend.

All used in a multi fuel stove with back boiler

    How did you find Greers?
    Was it the coyles ovoids?

I had these last year as my main fuel. Mixed with wood. Worked well.

Great heat and not much ash from the coal.

Was that the Coyoe Ovids? I'm wondering how they compare to the green bag from Smokeless Coal Express?
