My 87yr old mothers BG dual fuel contract has now expired and BG are now offering 0% discount to recontract. The best options appear to be Flogas & SSE. I had her mostly up to speed using the BG app (2.7 rating on Google Playstore) but I haven't used the SSE app (only 1.6 on Playstore). Is it really that bad?

Flogas don't have an app but appear to offer paper or paperless billing with no discount for the latter. Does anyone know what their customer portal webpage is like compared to the apps.

Web portal is good, has a place for the bills in a list, that's all you need.

I'd prefer web portals over dedicated apps anyway

I think the Flogas web portal sucks, I like to pay a bit every week or so and trying to do that is a disaster half the time

Cheap electricity is worth the hardship

    The internet isn’t for everyone

On SSE sign up, it says they'll match the contract with meter type. Is this an issue for a not activated smart meter?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36 newbie1956

thanks for that. That flogas plan and the SSE plan are almost identical when you look at the cost per year on 4200 units. One way or the other i will have to pay the 50 euro for breaking the present contract so I think its probably best to just move to SSE.

Any thoughts on fixed v variable rates when signing up to a new contract at the moment.

I hadnt noticed that. i have a smart meter but its not activated. Might ring them in the morning to see what the story is

Just be conscious that the SSE break fee is €100 not €50. FloGas won't switch you if you're still in contract.

I personally prefer fixed. I know my price for the year, I don't need to worry about price increases and I can predict my bills for the winter and hence plan for them.

My personal opinion is that I don't expect large reductions this winter. A minor reduction is possible but the fixed rate is already lower than the current variable.

thanks bren. Im still have 6 months to run with flogas so I cant see them allowing me any other plan. I already asked by phone and they said no. Im paying 27 cents a unit at the moment so it will pay me to move even after paying the 50 euro.

thats interesting about SSe exit fee. I didnt know that. At this stage then its a toss of a coin between SSE fixed or EI on variable, The EI plan is the best out there at the moment but Ill have to delve deeper into it.

Damn, was hoping they'd up ours from 24% to the 30% we got last year. If they remove it I'm gonna have to move.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 408 ✭✭Blinked_Missed It

Yep it's a bit odd. I'm only just out of contract so maybe their system hasn't updated to add a new off on my account page. I'll ring them tomorrow to see if they have anything to offer over the phone and report back here.

If no joy it's Flogas or SSE for me.

Their web portal is shite and difficult to navigate imo. It's not user friendly at all.

However, she could be setup with paper billing and direct debit? Would be relatively straight forward once setup. She may never need to interact with it but would still know what's going on.

If you need her to add money every month tho, it's annoying to use.

If you only need her to submit meter readings, it's not too bad but you'd be better off teaching her to do it on the ESB site. Supplier independent.

If you move to the cheaper fixed plan they won't charge you the 50, don't ring them just use the link bren posted earlier. I did it and they didn't charge me the 50, they have charged me the 50 because I moved to the BG EV plan, I don't mind as I'm still doing better on the EV plan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,354 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

No, they just use the code that's on your bill, MCC 02 etc and give you a plan that's compatible with your meter status.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,354 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

I never had a problem with the portal, every second month I added money to the account with my card without any hassle, it usually took about 2 days to appear which is fine.

Just completed the application to switch from BG to the Flogas Affinity offer after phoning BG. They said the banner for offers on my BG account page had disappeared as I was no longer in contract but the originally offered discounts of 24% off electricity & 20% off gas still stood.

Sadly they couldn't offer better than that so Flogas's rates are the better option at this moment.

Only when I moved to a different provider, when I moved to a cheaper fixed plan within the Flogas system they didn't charge me. I thought I made it clear in my post what I had done 🫣

Just a word of caution for anyone switching to a discounted Flogas plan. I was with them on the Community rate (electricity only, rural) since last September and then saw the slightly better BWG offer which appeared on this thread last March. I applied using the link posted here, received the usual welcome email (without any details of what plan I was on) and thought nothing more of it. I had been away from home for quite a long while soon after I switched so didn't notice they had put me on a fixed rate no-contract plan @ 37c kw/h. Absolutely my fault I didn't check my bills sooner, but watch your first bill very closely or get confirmation of your plan from them.

Hello, my missus has tasked me with finding a new supplier after a bit of a run in with Electric Ireland's customer service. We're well out of contract.

Living rurally, am I right on saying Flogas are the best?

We have one, old school meter. No day/night option. No smart meter and would prefer not to have to get one.

    Any advice?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 526 ✭✭✭sector_000

I am puzzled…. what's the concern about having a new Smart meter?

Getting one does not mean you have to take up a Smart plan.

Coincidentally, since my old meter got swapped out for a new Smart meter a year or so ago, my annual elec usage has decreased. Nothing to do with monitoring or changing habits… simply means that the old meter was miscalibrated 🙄. So I had been getting screwed for 20 years!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,834 ✭✭✭bren2001

FloGas the cheapest right now. It's a fixed rate so price changes won't affect you. Some people (myself) think that's a good thing. Others think variable is better right now (granted, not anyone on this thread that I'm aware of).

I've heard stories the other way i.e. dramatic increase due to a miscalibrated meter.

Theres no harm in having a smart meter. Handy to have. Albeit, I don't have one. Wasn't arsed making an appointment as the meters inside my house.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,781 ✭✭✭Flaneur OBrien

The person who owns the house doesn't want one.

Personally, the "smarter" things become, the easier they seem to develop faults.

Thanks for the Flogas recommendation. I'll get on to them tomorrow.

Weird, i asked them about changing plan last month and they put me on hold to check and said I'd have to pay the contract exit fee because I'm outside the cooling period.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,834 ✭✭✭bren2001

CoBo55 switched months ago. They changed their policy after they switched (April maybe?).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,354 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

Maybe they've changed things but they definitely didn't charge me the 50, that was in April. As has been advised here several times, don't ring them just use the online form.

I rang Energia today as I am out of contract, inquiring about renewing. The customer service rep advised as I have a smart meter I need to switch to a smart day / night plan. I cannot renew a the standard day / night MCC 02 plan.

They advised their policy is if a smart meter is changed mid contract on end of said contract if the customer wanted to renew to a new contract they can only choose a smart plan.

Has anyone on with a Day / Night MCC 02 plan on a smart meter been successful renewing a non smart plan with Energia?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,845 ✭✭✭Gooser14

I haven't renewed with them but I recently switched to them & had no problem staying on my Day/Night MCC02 Plan. I can't see why it should be different when renewing with them. I would be asking them to put that in writing & asking for a copy of their T&C's where that policy is stated.
