Yeah I think I might put my head in the sand until after the draft - even the Zach Wilson to LV rumors are floating now he's looking to be traded. :(

Oh Dear Lord, no. And to those who are going mad for us to "sell the farm" to draft one of the top 3 QB's, the draft is not necessarily the best place to find your Franchise QB. That guy went no.2 overall. I'm really nervous about us making a huge swing in the draft and sending future No.1 draft picks in multiple seasons for 1 guy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 748 ✭✭✭Kev8360

This would be the year to try to draft up based on the QB talent available but I just don't think we are a team that is a QB away from competing and we don't have a lot of high value players we can afford to lose in trade (holding onto Crosby and Adams I think is key for any kind of success next year) We need reinforcements at TE , RB and O line as well - . If we can get solid play from O'Connell and get some quality on o-line - especially in the interior and Right Tackle I think we can make some progress.

I agree - our roster has serious amounts of holes in it and we need draft capital to try and shore it up. I agree with you about the O-Line, funny I dont feel as concerned about RB, I think JJ will resign with us and if not, Zamir White has the potential to be a productive back for next season whilst we address other areas.

I think due to the Jamarcus Russell fiasco a few years ago, I am invariably nervous about swinging for the Franchise QB of the next decade for us. The amount of surefire QB picks that went awry are too numerous to mention. Not just for us but a lot of teams in general. If I was honest, and Russell Wilson was available on a Veteran Minumum contract, I'd prefer that option over trading to get into the top 3 picks. Too many teams are needy at QB and the teams holding those picks know it. Atlanta, Minnesota, Tennessee, NY Giants and Denver are all ahead of us with the same needs. I dont want to see us get into a bidding war to land one of those top 3 picks.

Yes you are right on RB - Zamir White did look good at the end of the season - even if Jacobs doesn't resign RBs can be found in the later rounds. I wouldn't be sold on Russ - I think its more likely no-one signs him when he is released and he will catch on with someone mid season when a starter goes down.

So we've signed Alexander Mattison. Now that was a surprise. He couldnt handle the load at the Vikings as the lead back (or maybe the scheme didnt suit him) but as a change of pace back he was really productive. I'm happy with those 2 in the lineup. Then draft a RB and Abdullah will round out the RB room.

As for QB, its a real head scratcher. I couldnt believe Fields went for a 5th or 6th round pick. I'm still not in favour of reaching in the draft, and I'm beginning to think that Telesco is going to wait until 13 and not look to move up. What that brings is anyone's guess. I even saw a tweet from a Raiders fan discussing the benefits of trading for Dak Prescott. Sky's the limit boys!!!! 😎

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 748 ✭✭✭Kev8360

Please no not Dak - he would be a big upgrade no doubt but the contract would leave us cash strapped to improve anywhere else - I dont think he is the missing piece for this team - we have too many other gaps to fill.

We are not in a good draft spot to get a QB and I agree I don't think Telesco will trade up for a QB. that will probably leave us reaching for a QB and that doesn't usually end well...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 173 ✭✭InsideEdge

I don't see Telesco being able to move up to get the fourth best QB, there are too many needy teams ahead of us. The only real chance of moving up is if the Patriots decide not to take a QB and move down but there would be a stiff price to pay for that pick. I also don't think Telesco will reach for a QB at 13, none of the other QBs are first round material so I think the Raiders will go either for a Tackle or a CB at that pick and see if one of Penix or Nix drops down far enough in the second round. Strengthening the OL around either Minshew or O'Connell should be the priority this season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 865 ✭✭✭Prefab Sprouter

There appears to be a view forming that the Raiders are looking at OL or CB at 13 and then potentially trading back into the 1st round to get Penix. More importantly it seems that most analysts are agreeing with you InsideEdge! Not seeing many analysts predicting a Raiders trade into the top 4 now.

Overall I think the draft went well - areas of need were prioritized (O-Line and Secondary especially) - now its on to camp and hopefully these guys can contribute some this season. With Sean Payton getting a full offseason, shedding Russell Wilson and Harbaugh at San Diego the AFC west will be a lot stronger next year. Going to need to bring it.

Hi Kev, you beat me to it, was going to post up something as we had all been very quiet over the off season. I was really pleased that the draft panned out the way it did. For once, we didnt overreach (and I'm sure Penix and Nix will be fine QBs but the hype behind the position this year was unreal) and we drafted Best player available. Couple of thoughts:

    1. Agreed about the areas of need. The O-Line looks stronger now and the Secondary too.
    2. I'm not that worried about QB, AOC and Minshew may not be elite but the position wont be wanting for effort. And AOC with a decent O-Line and a full off-season program will be a better QB than last year
    3. After Garropalo and Renfrow are officially released the Raiders will have good cap space. We arent done yet with Free Agency. And there are still some elite Secondary players who can come in and make a difference. Xavien Howard and Justin Simmons, I'm looking at you.
    4. We are looking better but so are our Division rivals. The Bolts and Chiefs specifically. I still think the Broncos have some catching up to do, even to catch us.
    5. No-one has a losing record in May!!! 🤣
    6. On a side issue, what were Atlanta thinking???? Signing Counsins to a massive contract and then taking a QB first round. Quite apart from the other needs that werent addressed, how do you think Cousins feels now???

Kirk cousins is getting $90 million guaranteed next 4 years - I honestly don't think he cares!

after seeing the first 2 preseason games I am leaning towards Gardner Minshew as the starter but I don’t have a good feeling either QB is going to have a high ceiling this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 173 ✭✭InsideEdge

Minshew is the starter but this could go horribly wrong, the amount of open receivers both QBs have missed in these games is worrying. Wonder how long Adams would hang around if he is getting no production out of Minshew or O'Connell.

Also worrying is the lack of a run defense and the lack of depth at cornerback. Lot of work for the Raiders to do in the next few weeks!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 748 ✭✭✭Kev8360

yep the first half of the cowboys game we played a lot of starters and the big worry was inability to finish drives and we allowed Trey Lance move the ball easily. Antonio Pierce will need to hit the ground running in the opener against the chargers or it could go south quickly

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 748 ✭✭✭Kev8360

Well our defense held up really well in the 1st half - but offense looks like it will need a lot of work to produce - especially the running game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,091 ✭✭✭eire4

and sadly it looks like it will be heading south real quickly if yesterday is anything to go by and Baltimore up next to likely make it 0-2.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 748 ✭✭✭Kev8360

My biggest concern after watching the game on Sunday was how little impact Zamir White had - our Running game didn't give us any base to ease the pass rush from Bosa and Mack. Its a combination of the O Line not getting the push as well but we need address that or else we will have a real hard time winning any divisional games

Can't disagree with that at all. I think the Raiders are really going to struggle badly this year. The only battle I see the Raiders maybe winning is beating and finishing ahead of the Broncos. At the end of the day its a QB driven league and the Raiders simply are not at the races in that regard. Minshew and O'Connell are both good backup QB's but no way good enough to start and take a team to the playoffs and be a threat to get to a superbowl. Until the Raiders address properly the QB situation the team is going nowhere IMHO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 748 ✭✭✭Kev8360

True but I dont see the QB situation improving this year - no-one really out there we could realistically trade for that is better then what we have without giving up some serious quality, maybe that's what we will have to do anyway as I don't know if the draft next year will be strong in the QB field.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,091 ✭✭✭eire4

Unfortunately I can't disagree with you there. There does not seem to be any other directions to go QB wise that would be a good idea at the moment. While as you rightly say draft wise at this point the next class of QB's seems to be a real step down from last seasons. All in all it looks like this could be a really rough season viewing wise. I expect the Raiders to be not only 0-2 by next weekend but probably after taking a real beating from the Ravens as well.

Just on nexts years QB class. Carson Beck and Shedeur Sanders are more certain to make it than any QB that came out this year. The only one I was not totally confident wouldn't make it was Caleb Williams. He could still make it but he did what I expect will happen a lot which was overthrow and off target a lot when pressured.

The only one I like will be sitting on a bench behind Kirk Cousins, that's Penix. He has question marks over his injury history but he's been healthy the last two years. He has all the tools and the football IQ.

You'd never know, if it's looking like you'll have a top three pick in the draft Blank might trade Penix for that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 748 ✭✭✭Kev8360

That was a standout performance from the defense last night - really kept us in the game especially in the 3rd quarter when it looked like the ravens would pull away. Could have ended differently if Justin Tucker hadn't missed on 2 50+ FGs but credit the D for forcing the long range FGs.

The Offense remains a work in progress - the o-line got over run early and didn't open any running lanes, but when you have Davante Adams there's always a chance. Brock Bowers looked great too. Gives us something to build on for sure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 173 ✭✭InsideEdge

That was quite the turnaround from last week, although some of the OLine deficiencies were still on show. Adams was superb and if Bowers keeps playing like this we have found a real gem. The defense was immense despite a few missed tackles, that move by Jones on Likely on the second-last play was probably the winning of the game. I think Miller is still catching up on his missed pre-season reps so I'm confident the OLine will start to improve, particularly if Jackson Powers-Johnson becomes fit enough to play. Big chance this weekend to put a lot of points on the Panthers.

Well I am happy to have been so wrong on how this weekend would go. A remarkable late comeback that was for sure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 865 ✭✭✭Prefab Sprouter

I didnt get to see the game (early evening gig to play) so was really pleasantly surprised to see the result. The next few opponents are not frightening (I'm not predicting anything at this point, we arent consistent enough to do that yet!!) Panthers, Browns, Broncos can all be beaten IF we play well. Its nice to dream!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 173 ✭✭InsideEdge

And I wouldn't be surprised to see us lose this weekend - Andy Dalton is 4 from 4 against us!
