Do you not understand how contracts work? Do you not realise that this is not football manager and you can't make a player break a contract just "because". Do you not realise that this is exactly how the club has been operating for the last twenty years? Giving players contracts that are stupid and almost impossible to move them on from because they are being paid too much relative to their contribution to the team.

In what world is a player earning 150k a week to be injured half the time going to agree to leave his contract and go elsewhere where he doesn't earn money if he's injured. Do you not realise how utterly silly that sounds?

If we paid £70m for Brainthwaite and the likes of Madrid or Barca picked up DeLight and Mazaroui for 20m less you'd have people on here cribbing that we need to be doing business like that. You really can't win with some fans.

Fans have spent years saying we need to be looking outside of the big name player signings and look for younger options, find future stars and players that will do at job rather than sell some jerseys. We sign Zirkzee, Yoro and are linked to Berge and people are now complaining about that also.

Who do people actually want the club to sign?

I'm not saying that but what I am saying is that it is would be difficult to shift him. You could offer to pay half his wages if another club bought him but would we be not be better off having him available since we'd be paying half his wages.

Could also pay off his contract but again you'd be losing him (for the little that he's available) for the same price as keeping him. It's another legacy problem that we can thank the Glazers for.

Do see it on reddit " I signed so and so in FM and hes a beast" Ok well John O'Flynn becomes a beast in the old CM games and he ended up at Cork City!

Would be happy enough with the signings so far, however middle of the park is still a major problem. Casemiros legs are gone…you dont get that 1/2 yard back in your thirties. Hopefully get Fofana in and would love to see us go for Adam Wharton

It's pointless calling out the same misery guts each day for repeating ad nauseum the same trotted out lines. At some point they'll be proved right, the manager will be sacked and they'll feel vindicated.

If people can't see the positive influence Ineos has had on the club in the short time they've been in control then I don't know.

Backroom has improved considerably, we've people in charge who actually know what they're doing, we're not being bent over on players now. Facilities in the training complex have also been identified as needing works and it's being worked on at the moment. Dead wood in the squad have been moved on also

Theres plenty to do but it's literally the first few months of them in charge. I'm aware there's more to do but I'm happy with what I'm seeing

League is 2 days away and I can't wait to see some football again

Sky Sports this morning saying United in talks for DeJong again. £41.5m offer turned down last month and back talking now.

That rumour is almost 100% pure waffle. The club are not going to sanction a move for him with Mainoo after breaking into the team. Plus, he's on stoooooopid money at Barca, in the region of 600k a week and owed millions in back pay. He's stuck at Barca for a few years yet and I'm delighted for him.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

I just don't see the point in this.

We can agree a fee with Barca.

We can agree a wage with his agent.

But Barca are not going to pay him off the difference of his contract. he is due a frankly laughable 75milliion from them over the next TWO years. 700k a week. So not only do you have the fact he loves living in Barcelona and is actually really liked by the fans… you have the 'fact' that if he signed for United on top United wages he'd still be missing out on 36million!

I would be SHOCKED if De Jong went anywhere, cause Barca won't pay him and why should he give it up.

Plus… He's not really a DM. We need a DM.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,947 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

Lol - he is 'stuck' at the club he wants to be at. Poor him! And he would only be 'stuck' because he wants his money, barca would be only too delighted to say goodbye.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,530 ✭✭✭fatherted1969

De Jong is hamstrung by the contract he's on. He'll run down his contract and go on a free in 2 years. There isn't a club in the world who'll pay a third of what he's currently on at barca

it’s fair to say the board have done their job this summer. It’s not ground breaking, but it’s positive. I’m interested to see how the season unfolds. From what I’ve read, INEOS are very hands on. We got very stale and predictable last season, it’s nice going into the season seeing that there is constructive changes happening across all areas.

For the first time in a long time, it does feel like the grown ups are back in charge.

I find it utterly hilarious that despite Barca being bolloxed due to them handing out historically mental contracts, Chelsea are still, today, doing exactly the same thing. In another 2 years time, Chelsea are going to be absolutely screwed, and i cannot wait to see it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,612 ✭✭✭SteM

And they won't have the same 'financial levers' barca have been able to pull over the last few years because they're a much smaller club.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,947 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

The contract lengths are insane, but the wages are not. Palmer is on 120 now, apparently. He'd get double that at United easily. He'd make 150-200 easy at any other top pl side right now too.

The Barca issue is the value of the wages, somehow Chelsea aren't suffering that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,361 ✭✭✭IncognitoMan

Yeah.. Marcos Alonso was a liability at the back when he was 25 nevermind 33.

He can't be the best option out there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,445 ✭✭✭Quags

Not once did I say break his contract, if you read back I said sell him? I fully understand how contracts iworks but I’m thinking you’re struggling with what I said! Not once was break the contract said it was SELL HIM

Regarding the stupid contracts, who knows the club and shaw could come to an agreement if it ever comes to that point where he gets some payoff for his deal but not 💯 off the remaining deal

i don't like Ugarte links popping up again.

Theres only two weeks to go. I'd move to Berge and say thats our business done.

Worst case = we have Berge and didn't waste time chasing Ugarte who we could never afford anyway.

Best case = we have Berge and PSG panic at the idea of being stuck with Ugarte and agree to whatever reduced offer we make in the final few days.

Only because the players they're signing aren't proven entities though. And I suspect the likes of those young players have clauses to incrementally increase their wage across the duration of their contracts. They'd be absolutely mental not to do that when agreeing to 8 years plus.

There might also be the CL wage rise clauses which might explain why Chelsea don't seem arsed about getting top 4 and more concerned about 'winning' the transfer window😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,445 ✭✭✭Quags

Ah I 💯 agree with ye regarding the difficulty in moving him but the hope I think we all have is that the new direction we seem to be going is we don’t let players hang about and we decide that enough is enough. There is the option of the wage and then a 75% payout of remaining deal etc with Shaw but again that’s not to say it’s going to happen with him, he could give us a great 2nd half of the season 😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,361 ✭✭✭IncognitoMan

He is but also there is a bit more to it.

Basically when he joined Barca they were strapped for cash (shock).

So FDJ agreed to a contact where his wages were lighter for the first few years but the balance would be covered in the later years.

He was paid a relatively modest wage for years 1 + 2 for a player of his ability to help Barca get around their wage issues with La Liga. Think it might have been as low as 30/40k a week.

So while he might be on 500/600k now it is because he's essentially being paid his wage plus arrears from the club.

I don't think FDJ would expect 600k at his new club. But he's dead right to want what Barca agreed to pay him.

    Barca are the **** here

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,318 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

He should have been in prison at 25. He's not the best option and I couldn't see the new guys even thinking about bringing him in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,318 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

Shaws injury shouldn't force any sudden changes to their transfer plans because Shaw always gets injured. If this injury forces an unplanned panic move, then it would be very poor form from them.

I suspect they've decided to use Shaw when fit, give Amass a bit of experience and to also use Dalot/Mazraoui there when needed.

I would have prioritised a LB this summer myself but it seems well down the list. Shaw getting injured is entirely predictable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,234 ✭✭✭✭DrPhilG

I don't have an issue with the link coming back up. It's not like the old days with where the links would resurface because United were putting all their eggs in one basket and being held over a barrel. In this instance it seems more like we left an offer on the table, refused to increase it, and then PSG are possibly going to cave and accept it after conceding that we won't be held to ransom. And hopefully if Berge is only around the €20m mark then we buy him too!

If sourcing an acceptable DM is proving problematic I think the club will hold onto Mc Sauce as while he is limited he has good versatility.

If they then got someone like Berge in in the closing weeks of the Window it would leave us in a relatively good shape midfield.

Then make signing a top DM one of main focuses for next Summer.

We definitely need to sign an experienced LB on loan given all our sicknotes players in that position. It would be unfair to expect Amass to step up this Season.

Realistically speaking we also need an experienced Striker to come in who is willing to have a bit part role to play.Someone along the lines of an Odion Ighalo, who came in and did a decent job amidst the club having poor striker cover.

Calvert Lewin has being mentioned but that’s pure clickbait imo.No way Ineos go for an injury ravaged player like him.

He's dead right to want his money as well, can't say I blame him. He has been somewhat dicked around by them over the last 2 seasons and even if he wanted to move somewhere else he really can't. Now, maybe he's happy there and if so then the best of luck to the chap.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

Ugarte is a better fit for us than Berge. Also, PSG are interested in Sancho, and I can't see us having those same conversations with Burnley..

I know its fairly rare to see high profile player exchanges with/without cash happening but if Sancho was offloaded and Ugarte brought in as part of the same transaction it would be amazing. A real 2 birds with one stone.

Regardless of what happens with Ugarte, I really want to see Sancho sold. The club is far better off without him.
